Police Encourage N. Va. Residents To Be Street Smart

Police in Arlington on Monday kicked off a new effort to keep pedestrians safe in northern Virginia.

The program is called Street Smart. It hopes to cut down on the number of pedestrian-related accidents and deaths in the region.

Police were out at two busy intersections in Rosslyn on Monday morning to kick off the program. Police will be cracking down on pedestrian safety at the intersection of Lynn Street and Wilson Boulevard and at the intersection of N. Lynn and Lee Highway.

lol, I just tossed mine in the trash, I was wondering why they were handing stuff out. The cops are always standing out at the Lynn St./Wilson intersection in the morning, never saw them handing out safety information though.

BTW- the brochure is worthless. It's like something you'd give a 6 year old.... stuff like "look both ways before crossing", etc. There is tons of jaywalking thru that intersection, maybe that's why they picked that location.

Were the flyers printed in English? They should also target Columbia Pike
and 4 Mile Run. Screeeeeeeech!!! Blap Blap! Screeeeeeech!!!

Why are the police trying to fight Darwin? If people aren't in the road they don't get hit. Most pedestrian fatalities involve jaywalkers. How come the police are ticketing cars and advising pedestrians? They should be ticketing pedestrians.

By the way, the thread is offtopic as this involves Arlington County.

FWIW, I see alot of unsafe drivers traveling thru that intersection, it's not just the jaywalkers that are the problem. Cars going WAY too fast down that hill on Wilson, people running redlights, and idiots that don't come to a complete stop when making a right on red (with pedestrians in the crosswalk). There are often crowds of 20-30 people crossing the street at a time, which only adds to the safety concerns. One third of the pamphelet they handed out dealt with bicycle safety, so I'm not sure if maybe there are alot of bike accidents around Rosslyn.

It's not just the pedestrians, that whole intersection needs to calm down. Cops handing out a dumbed-down brochure seems like a complete waste though.

What is it with this public relations campaign on pedestrian safety. As far as I know anywhere in the world that you walk in front of a speeding car your ass is grass so being from another country really doesnt excuse the stupidity.

Fairfax went to great expense to put in a traffic signal controlled crosswalk on Rt 50 near Lohmanns Plaza. The hispanics still just run in front of cars. They do press the button to activate the light but I guess get tired of waiting for it to change and just race across the street.

Reminds me of the frogger game. If only they would put in some speakers with the video sounds when a mexican gets hit and it goes woooooo squish.....
