historic aerial photos

anybody know where to find historic aerial photos of the current Dulles area? (preferably from around 1958-1962 and before then)

the landscape of the area which is now dulles was WAY different and me being a obsessed with local history find it really interesting to see what it was like.

from what i know already, an entire town was wiped out (Willard), along with a lot of farms, mansions, and roads, some dating back from civil war times.

i like aerial photos because i can compare ones of different times right next to each other and overlay, and make direct comparisons. there was once a huge mural-photo AT Dulles in the arrivals section on the wall, but its since been taken down.

if anybody has any photos of old buildings/roads/towns that once existed where dulles is, that'd be great too.

if anyone could give me advice on where to get them, or if they could email/attach them here, thatd be awesome. High resolution is encouraged.

if anyones interested, heres an interesting map i found from 1915 that you can use in Google Earth showing the roads:

,Thank you

The US Geological Survey in Reston used to have a map store that was open to the public, and I'm pretty sure they had aerial photographs. They might not keep them in stock, but you could probably special order them. You can try contacting them to see if they can help:

Thanks so much guys, I got my hands on a couple good aerials, which are slightly low res, but they're much better than nothing. They're quite interesting in fact, if any of you have Google Earth, you should take a look.

turn on the "roads" feature to see how it matches up.

great to know fairfax roads were completely fucked up back in 1915 and people have kept the tradition of stupidity alive! the assholes who made the layout of the roads should have been hanged.

The Lee family didn't have anything to do with the road situation here in Virginia you young idiots. You must be some Yankee transplant, and as usual have nothing but bad things to say about Robert E. Lee. As for that feller Gravis, I would like to give him a barbed wire enema, all his posts usually are mean spirited, he sounds like some sort of sexually pent up piss ant. I catch you at any grave site messing with any graves and you will be needing a grave site of your own-you little queer!

Robert E Lee (the confederate civil war general) owned property which has now been turned into the Arlington National cemetary.

Anything more than 25 years old is going to be "low resolution" as that's all there was. It is interesting to see how few houses were around Dulles when it was built in 1962. It's why I have zero fucks to give to people out there that complain about the airplane noise. Same for the neighborhoods around National, which was built on reclaimed land in 1940 to replace the airlield that was on the land where the Pentagon now sits.

Fairfax County GIS and Mapping Service has comprehensive aerials for selected years back to 1937. Google that to find and download the viewer.

In the Colonial Era and even as late as the 1850s people in Northern Virginia weren't that interested in travelling to and from Washington DC. They wanted to get to the nearest port, Alexandria. That is why Little River Turnpike and Leesburg Pike and why Northern Virginia's rail networks radiate out from Alexandria rather than from Washington DC.

Actually Hoover Field didn't touch where the Pentagon is, but close. It was located where the current Boundary Channel cloverleaf is to get on and off I395. It was where Connector Rd and Long Bridge Drive used to meet.

Hoover Field is at the bottom of this picture. Washington Field was directly across Long Bridge Dr to the east. They eventually merged and then were replaced by DCA which moved along it an area filled in north east of Washington Field (its current location).
