Virginia's Sangria Ban, Yup it's Illegal to serve

I found this article interesting so I thought I would share -

RICHMOND, Jan. 23 -- A Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control agent conducting a routine inspection in 2006 cited La Tasca Spanish Tapas Bar and Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria for violating an obscure 75-year-old state law:

It's illegal to serve sangria in Virginia.

The fruity cocktail of wine and brandy that is a must-have at Spanish restaurants violates a law that forbids mixing wine or beer with spirits. If convicted, a bartender could go to jail for a year.

So this would also mean that Yager bombs are illegal.

Really? I remember going to Olive Garden a few months back with a couple of friends and they served us a pitcher of sangria. Why would this be illegal?

Arcane state law that's somehow still on the books. Something to do with prohibiting the mixture of beer and wine with distilled spirits.

If everything goes as expected the law will change July 1 with the rest of newly enacted laws. Sometimes the sangria you are served is wine and not a true sangria with brandy.
BTW the bartender cannot mix the two different alcohols but you can. Like a boilermaker. The bartender can give you a shot of whiskey and a mug of beer it is up to you to mix them whatever way you want.
