Schools delay possible Monday with slippery surfaces and freezing rain tonight?
Posted by: WhoWouldveKnown ()
Date: January 22, 2012 02:33PM

Tonight, they are calling for freezing rain and possibly sleet. With some surfaces already icy, the freezing rain may add more danger. What do you think this will do for schools? Will schools possibly be delayed?

Good question. I think it warrants consideration. At least you didn't get the Penn Jillette gif that most losers on here use.

you really should go to school.
if you don't you will end up hanging out at kilroys as a 40 something year old, wearing a shirt with flames on it, thinking your tough because you belong to a motorcycle club.

Its ok if you end up Kilroys, the constant smoking, drinking, and idiotic behavior on a motorcycle will end your misery to others prematurely anyway

If it actually does freezing rain, there is a legitimate chance of a delay.

There is going to be water on the sidewalks and a chance of sprinkle or two. No way FCPS can allow students to go to school in that.

True, guys! They actually even mentioned some snow in the forecast... we'll see. I remember walking outside yesterday around this time, and the sidewalks and roads were an obstacle course of ice. Made it impossible to even leave my neighborhood without being afraid of slipping. If we get some freezing rain and/or snow, then without doubt, there will be a delay, and if its worse, then a closing.

NO way will I allow my children to venture out under such treacherous conditions. My children are all in the gifted and talented program, won the Reflections contest, are Robotic League champions and all excel in travel sports teams. If any of them slip and fall, then what? Sit out for an entire season or perhaps a game or two? That's simply unacceptable, especially when we have hired trainers and coaches!

By the way, yes, I drive a minivan (recklessly) and of course, I have cartoon stick figures of each of my children on the rear window each portraying my highly-successful child engaged in just one of the many sports activities in which each partakes. I've run out of room for the many, many honor roll achievement bumper stickers.

If school is closed, and I really hope that it is, I will spend the morning frantically calling summer camps to get each registered for one or five camps that pertain to his/her interests.

You heard it here first (10 pm Sunday):

Fairfax County Public Schools will open two hours late on Monday January 23. The following will apply:

Elementary schools (which usually close early on Mondays) will close at their usual Tuesday through Friday time.
Offices will open on time.
Morning preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education (Head Start) classes are canceled. Full-day preschool (special education) and Family and Early Childhood Education (Head Start) classes start two hours later than the regular schedule. Afternoon preschool (special education) starts on the regular Tuesday-through-Friday schedule.
Morning field trips are canceled.
SACC centers will open by 7:15 a.m.
Adult and community education classes will start on time.

I do not have a dog in the fight as I have no school age kids. That being said I sometimes think the school admin who makes this decision likes the attention he/she gets and it could be a power trip that they can hold up thousands of parents plans.
The Fed has determined to open late why not the schools?

I think we all have to wait until 5:00 a.m. for further announcement.

http://www.fcps.edu/news/weatherdecision.shtml

Many staff members, such as bus drivers, leave home well before 5 a.m. Many parents need time to make last-minute arrangements for child care. Accordingly, the school system makes every effort to make decisions to delay opening or to not open schools by 4:30 a.m. Once a decision is made by the Superintendent, it takes approximately 30 minutes to complete notifying local media, updating the school system web page, the school system television channel, sending Keep in Touch e-mail and SMS messages, and posting to Facebook and Twitter.

My guess is late opening. If so, dismissal will be 3:55 p.m.

How many didn't do their homework last night because of these postings?

Loved watching all the kiddies sliding on their asses down the hill to school this morning.

Betcha there's something on the news tonight about a FCPS kid who got hurt because of the ice.
