***Police Seek Assistance Identifying Robbery Suspect

The Fairfax County Police Department, in cooperation with the Prince William County Police and the Manassas Park Police Department are investigating a series of armed robberies that have been occurring since December 29, 2011, and which involve a white female suspect.

The first robbery occurred on December 29, 2011, at a Shell Gas station located at 13704 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway in the Chantilly area. Around 10:30 p.m., a woman entered the business, displayed a small silver handgun and demanded cash. The clerk gave cash to the suspect who then left in a dark colored station wagon.

The second robbery also occurred on December 29, 2011 at the 7-Eleven store, located at 8521 Centreville Road in Manassas Park. Around 11:09 p.m., a woman entered the store, displayed a black handgun and demanded money. Before the clerk could comply, a customer approached the store and the suspect fled to a car parked nearby.

The third robbery occurred on January 1, 2012 in the Manassas area of Prince William County. Around 2:30 a.m. a woman entered the 7-Eleven store located at 10740 Coverstone Drive, displayed a black handgun and demanded money. The clerk complied and the suspect fled on foot.

The latest robbery occurred on January 10, 2012 at an Exxon Gas station, located at 7519 Leesburg Pike in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County. Around 10:05 p.m. a woman entered the business and displayed a small black handgun and demanded money. The clerk gave cash to the suspect who then fled on foot toward the Idylwood Plaza shopping center located near Route 7 and Pimmit Drive.

In each case, the suspect has been described as white, in her early to mid-20s, 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall, wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans or dark colored pants, and displaying a silver or black handgun. In the last case the suspect wore a black mask to cover the lower portion of her face.

The suspect is associated with a dark-colored, small station wagon style vehicle, similar to a Subaru Forrester or Outback.

That's not true. In almost everyone of the bulletins they always mention the race pretty bluntly.

What would be the point of not mentioning the race?

On another note.. why do security cameras suck so much? The video camera in my phone is better than that. Also, yea, 7-11 is a terrible target. After 10 pm they can't even make change for a 50 bill.

 

Security cameras suck because they don't usually plan on having to use them. Half the time they're not even recording (or even capable of recording).
And yeah, convinience stores usually have a very limited amount of cash on hand - not exactly the best target.

really... the security cameras can't be upgraded enough so that they store higher quality video footage?

why not have those places covered in cameras that record great quality on a 1 to 2 hour loop where the recorder stores longer periods of time at lower quality.

that way, when there is some real problem like these, the 1 to 2 hour backups are in high quality and can be saved for the cops.

this day in age and we can't get better footage than that?

That would work great, if it were that simple. Unfortunately, you can't just change the quality of a recording. Even if we assume that the recordings ARE digital (which isn't guarenteed), converting quality takes time, and can't be done by the camera itself.

Even if it were possible (which, trust me, it isn't), they'd end up spending more time and money on security than what was stolen. Convinience stores usually have less than $50 cash at any time.

What I want is a constantly recording digital (set of) cameras recording full-speed video over, say, a 10 minute before til 20 minute after time slice (arbitrary values) with the stream simply cropped to one frame per N time units outside that time slice. The size of the time slice could be changed with storage size - a SMALL SS drive could easily handle a large time slice.

I would assume that of that 10% that are female, about 90% are either black or latina.
They should just let her go. She's breaking stereotypes - proving that anyone can grow up to be anything.

No one wants to invest any time or money in cameras for a store that probably rarely if ever gets robbed anyways and if it does they walk away with maybe $30.

See, this is why the video is grainy; because no one knows the technical aspect of buying a camera. What can I say, the store owner bought a cheap camera. At least he had one.
