how about you give your son more money? or why didn't your son borrow money from one of his friends?? Why would the lunch lady be short of money because you have no heart and didn't give your son enough money for lunch?

Food Services is funded solely by lunch money, not taxes. Though they actually ARE in the charity business (free/reduced lunches to students theoretically get paid by some government), they cannot give away lunches to those who can afford to pay.

The Food Service Lady should have called over the manager; or equivalently, perhaps the Food Service Lady told your son to talk to the manager? Note that the Food Service Lady could have gotten in trouble had she given your son a reduced price lunch and gotten caught doing it.

No, if you want to get a person fired from their job for 50 cents, you should talk to the appropriate person; the principal has nothing to do with Food Services other than discipline problems that occur in the lunch room such as food theft (a real problem), fights, and food fights. First, talk to the manager of the cafeteria - it's unlikely that person will fire the Food Service Lady, however. So go over the manager's head to the Food Services supervisor for that pyramid. That's also unlikely to get results so you may have to go to Food Services HQ to try to get results; appropriate contact numbers are available on http://www.fcps.edu

Our PTA covers for a child when they are short on money. A note is sent home with the child asking for the money to be returned. A child should never go without lunch in FCPS.

PS You can go to MYLUNCHMONEY.COM online and deposit money into your childs account and they will notify you when you get low.

There are alternate-payment methods in place for elementary students. I don't believe there are methods in place for higher schools; students are given more responsibility - including more responsibility to screw up - the school in the OP is Annandale High School. Typically, the cafeteria manager will put shortages "on account" and pay the difference him/herself to the particular register.

I talked to him about it. He didn't talked to the manager, he just walked away. He didn't know he could talk to someone about the isssue thanks for understanding. sometimes we forget to give our kids money for lunch. I wish the lady would of handed it differently but, I don't want her fired.

Sometimes you forget to give your kids money? Sometimes? So, more than once? This explains why the lunch lady didn't want to give your kid food to begin with. I think I should call CPS and have your kids taken from you, for forgetting to give your kids 50 cents extra for lunch.

Your son doesnt know one person who can lend him 50 cents? Or maybe he spent it all on weed. Either way he probably needs new friends

Just tell them that you're a poor hispanic family and that you can't be responsible for feeding your own kids. Tell them that its there job to give him free lunches because its his go given right to eat...even if the taxpayers foot the bill.

Seriously though, why didn't he just borrow some change from classmates? I went to a private school with tons of rich kids and it happened every lunch period, especially if it was just 50 cents.

Yes, you're right. However, the great likelihood is that the kid does not have diabetes. And, presumably, if he did, he would let someone know that, especially in high school.

Kids run out of lunch money sometimes, and it can be hard to keep track - especially if your kid routinely gets more food than you budget for and if you have multiple kids. I would cut the guy some slack on this.

What I have a problem with is the OP even thinking that the lunch lady should be fired for this incident. She has rules to follow, and as a poorly paid service person she can't afford to get in trouble for breaking the rules. People in NOVA forget that there are other people here living on the edge. We don't need to make their lives any harder.

Most places consider unauthorized discounts to be employee theft. Plus its not like people working in lunch rooms can risk getting fired, especially in this economy.

Simply put, you are a clown, considering that you want a person fired because they didnt give your kid lunch for free. You should have made sure your kid had enough money on his account. If you want to blame someone, report yourself to child protective services for causing your kid to go without a lunch.

In my school, people forgot their lunch money all the time. You were allowed to "charge" lunch. So basically pay it back the next day or so.

True but the issues are separate. If the situation was made up, then it is likely the angry naivete is as well.

Was he paying from money on a card that ran out, or with cash?

If it's the latter, there needs to be some middle ground / policy in place to prevent everyone from saying they're a bit short and just keeping the change for soda and whatnot later on.

I remember losing my lunch money on from time to time when I was a student in FCPS. Whether I was in high, middle or elementary school I knew I would still eat. Each school had a program set up for those times when you forgot your money or left your lunch on the bus. Today almost none of the schools have a program set up. And you realize they are throwing out food everyday. How about every kid gets 10 free lunches a year. The equivalent of one a month. To be used for emergencies only. Something should be done because they are kids and it may be impossible for the parents to get to the school with money or food for those few occasions when the kid is short of funds. Just seems outrageous to tell little Johnny we are throwing away 10 pieces of pizza and 14 hamburgers and no you can't have one. Eat when you get home.

There are 177,629 students in Fairfax County Public Schools. Let's assume a lunch costs $2.50 or 10 lunches for $25 per student.

That's $4.4 million per year.

Food Services survives without tax dollars - they ONLY pay for themselves through money paid for food sales.

Care to source your information? I can only speak for the few schools/teachers that I interact with, but all of them have something set up so every kid eats. All the kid has to do is ask.

Try and go to McDonalds and not have enough money, you don't get the food. Parents can put money on their childs account online with a credit card. It is the parents responsibility to feed their child not the schools. No heart no, you must have no brain. Next you will want us to wipe their asses!

Contrary to popular belief, FCPS fires people ALL the time, especially lowly support staff. BUT it takes more than some stupid ass parent complaining about some trivial matter like this.

If that's all it took to get a school employee fired there would be NO FUCKING BODY working in the schools.
