Help me with my questions about Springfield mall!
Posted by: Snoopy's Fair ()
Date: January 15, 2012 10:38AM

I first visited Springfield Mall in the 80s as a toddler but most of the good times I remember were as a teen during the 90s. When did all the vacancies start? I went there in 2009 and entire sections of the mall were vacant, esp the wing where the planet play and old ballys were. I remember in the 90s, the mall was PACKED on the weekends. You had a bunch of rifraffs but they were just regular fighting or stealing and we had none of the shootings that we did post 2000. So I'm trying to list some of the stores that were in the mall during the 80s and 90s that I remember well. If anyone can add to this, would be appreciated

Another Universe (kickass comic book store with a big Predator statue up front near Gap escalator)
The bottom Time Out near present day Target
There was a sports cards & memorabilia store owned by a black math teacher (right next to upstairs Time Out)
Structure (clothing store that was kind of the Express of the 90s)
Gap
Up Against the Wall
Hong Kong (this store was cool and had swords and movie posters and all these knicknacks)
Sports Authority
Montgomery Ward
Ballys
Planet Play (laser tag and arcade)
Oak Tree
CVS upstairs near Montgomery Ward
Discovery Store (I miss these, they had the coolest things)
Food Court near Planet Play wing (There was a pizza hut there right?)

Fusion, upstairs and down from Time Out and the sports memorabilia store. That's where everyone went to get their tongues pierced in high school. There was always a strange smell coming out of there...

A&W restaurant upstairs by Time Out and JCP. My favorite hot dogs and burgers, ever.

Orange Julius next to Time Out.

"Luci," full of expensive, breakable collectibles that our moms loved.

Suncoast Video/Music. Run by queers, had the best entertainment memorabilia (dolls and plushies) along with VHS/DVD/whatever.

Oh yeah, David's Bridal downstairs next to JCP. Now it's a place called Chocolate, that I swear to God is a front for money laundering.

Lane Bryant for the fat girls.

Casual Corner for the boring girls.

The General's Store for those interested in the Civil War.

Sam Goody Music, very big store that had everything.

And everyone remembers KB Toys! :-)

Of course, the old theatre (it was split between two locations in the mall) is long gone.

There is the main food court, but there also used to be another food wing which had a Pizza Hut express and a Burger King.

Hard to believe, but for a matter of a few months, Springfield Mall was the largest mall on the East Coast.

Don't forget K&K toys, that was between the shoe store and the Jordan Kitts music store. it was in the middle of the mall downstairs across from the old 'Korvettes' store, that got ripped out and became a new wing of the mall. Of course that happened back in 87 I think.
Also, SpaceWay RaceWay was the original arcade on the lower level near the Montgomery Wards and the York Steakhouse. It used to have a bumper car track in the back of the store, kids would go there on Fri Nights and sneak beer in and spill it on the track. That one later was bought out and became Time Out 2

There was never a Woodward and Lothrop at Springfield Mall. Department stores there in the 70s included a Montgomery Ward's, Korvette's, JC Penney's, and Garinfkels.

The Korvette's was ripped out and the wing expanded that is where Macy's now stands.

I think the pet store was upstairs on the east side of the mall on the Wards end.
Downstairs below it was KayBee toys I believe.

I remember working in several different stores in the mall during that time as a kid. I ate a lot in York Steak House. I remember that long line that would be looking through those little holes in the wall at people eating at a table. Sometimes kids would reach through to your table for bread.

I believe they had to take the big circular 'pits' out because teenagers were 'up to no good' in them too often.

I remember 'The Velvet Pumpkin' candle store got busted for selling cocaine out of it, and was shut down. The clothing store 'DJs' got busted for that too, as well as the Pizza place that was downstairs on the Wards end.

Stop right were you are! You know the score, pal! If you’re not a cop you’re little people.

Delete cop, replace with SES/congressman. DC explained.

Drink a few beers, and rewatch it. The older you get the more it makes sense.

The other film that gets better with age is Heaven and Earth, not the Stone crap, the Jap film. I thought I understood it as a young enlisted man watching it drunk with friends over there, now as a much older GS I see the many layers.

Doctor Pets. They got in trouble for not taking care of their animals or something I think, it made local news... right outside of JC Penny on the left, upper level..

Also, Original Cookie.

I used to work at Micks Restaurant as a waiter in the late 90's, really good homemade desserts, asshole managers. Years later they changed the name to "Nicks" due to Mcdonalds lawsuits--so I heard. The place eventually closed or relocated but the chain was related to a real upscale restaurant on 14th st in DC.

There used to be a Circuit City in the mall parking lot at the corner where Lee High School is.
Also in that little shopping strip that was in the southwest corner of the parking lot was a Godfather's pizza place. It was next to Springfield Ford.

Remember when you'd order a Zoo at Farrells and they would run around carrying it to your table and banging on the big drum? Supposedly in that huge mound of ice cream were some plastic animals but I never saw any.

http://ourredneckpast.blogspot.com/2010/10/great-leif-garrett-riot-of-78.html

The Great Leif Garrett Riot of '78
In April 1978, Harmony Hut in Springfield Mall scheduled an appearance by the new pop superstar Leif Garrett. 16-year old Garrett arrived to find at least 1000 screaming girls mobbing the store to get a glimpse of their beloved star. Garrett spent about three minutes in the store and the crowd surged forward screaming like sirens according to store workers. Having lost complete control, the Harmony Hut employees moved Garrett out a back door and began to try to close the store. The crazed girls pulled the sliding doors off their tracks and were rapidly transforming into a crazed mob. Many girls were trampled and some went into hyperventilation. In the end 15 girls had to go to the hospital and 50 or so given first aid at the scene. Of course, a short time later Leif Garrett was forgotten, but his legacy in NOVA was a pack of crazed girls tearing apart the Harmony Hut at Springfield Mall.

Wasn't it K&B Toys? Or K&B Toy and Hobby? Not K&K.

No, they've started hiring though. The facade is being constructed.

Wasn't Orange Julius the place outside of JCP? I remember them, but I can't say I ever bought drugs there. I was offered drugs more than once at the outside entrance to Spaceway Raceway. Pretty sure they closed that entrance when it became Timeout II.

Pizza Delight. George was one of the guys arrested. He used to hang out in West Springfield at The Coppa night club (originally West Springfield Twin Cinemas - then became Jaxx afterwards). George used to roll with a body guard or two - they drove him around in a big white Mercedes.

1) Does anyone recall the name of the MAGIC SHOP on the lower floor near one of the entrances? Early 80s...someone mentioned a place that conducted consumer surveys - it was directly across from there. Ground floor if I recall.

2) Exiting Montgomery Ward into the mall, on the left there was a record store...was that Kemp Mill?

3) Less than a mile away, there used to be great music store that sold guitars, drums, etc over by the location where a K-Mart was opened... anyone know what the name of that store was? They had every instrument.

I remember the magic shop, it was downstairs next to the "Needle in a Haystack" which sold record player needles. Was it called Rabbit in a Hat or just The Magic Shop? I bought a magic trick from that store when I was a kid.

Exiting Monkey Wards on the ground floor, on the left was a mall entrance and then Taco Bueno (which had awesome cheap food). Next to that was Kay Bee Toys I believe. Upstairs had a record store on the left and a pet store next to that I think. I think the record store was a Waxie Maxie?

It was Venemans Music. They were awesome. They sold their stores to shitty Guitar Center after shittier Mars Music moved in nearby.

Anyone remember the American restaurant that had a bar in it on the lower level next to Montgomery wards around 1998? Had 2 entrances. 1 in the mall and one that led outside.

Walker7727 - that restaurant was called Slade's for a while. This was an old Roy Rogers.

Wasn't there a Ruby Tuesday downstairs, did that become Slades?

Where Farrell's used to be did that become Silver Spoon and then American Cafe?

There was a Country western boot store near the Orange Julias that I remember..

Came across some old cassette tapes from one of the music stores a couple of years ago. They had a lifetime guarantee sticker on them. That's when it became apparent that lifetime guarantee means the life of the product or the store, whichever comes first.

What was the name of the country western clothes store? They sold boots and cowboy hats. Yes, it was by the Orange Julius by JCPenny.
Trying to think of the name of it today.

There was a Piccadilly walk up cafeteria in the food court back around 1999. Not sure how long it had been there. Most Piccadilly cafeterias are free standing or have full restaurants inside malls. Both Potomac Mills and Springfield Mall had these small scale walk up "cafeterias".

Ignorance at its finest. You really should just leave the area and move into a retirement home so you can be surrounded by old white people. Have you even been to the mall lately?

Montgomery Ward had its own somewhat-separate record store on the upper floor as you exited into the mall.

And why do people keep calling the mexican place "Taco Bueno"? It was Taco Laredo.

If you're talking about the mid-late 80's, there was also a record store when you came out of Montgomery Ward and down a bit on the left. Think it was called Record World (?). Had a bunch of metal lp's and tapes, lots of hard to find obscure metal and punk stuff. Bought a bunch of metal records there.

WJ Colt was the only original non anchor tenant. They were in that space from the mall opening to the Springfield Town Center renovation.

There was also a store downstairs, kind or at the bottom of some steps, that sold American Indian stuff - dream catchers and headdresses and such. I think they went out of business before they even started talking about re-doing the mall.

They were at the bottom of the escalator in the Macy's wing.
