How to recycle or dispose of a CRT monitor?
Posted by: Space Ghost ()

I have a bunch of old computer monitors I want to get rid of. I think they're too old to even give away on Craigslist. They're supposed to have lead and stuff, so you shouldn't throw them away. Is there a way to have them picked up, or get rid of them without spending any money?

I wish there was an easy way... a couple of years ago I tried to drop one off at a "green" PC equipment disposal site. It was off the beaten path on a scary area on Edsall Road, and when I got to the address no one knew what I was talking about. I was going to have to pay $15 or something like that. I didn't have any more time to waste so I went directly to the dump with it. I tried.

Anyway, maybe there are better ways to do it in Fairfax County. Montgomery County MD makes it a lot easier... they have county-run PC equipment drop off points.

I took mine apart and cut up the insides and threw pieces out in the garbage. It took awhile to get it into little parts but I managed. Now, about the lead and crap th OP mentioned, I guess I came in contact with that stuff, so what will happen to me? I'm starting to feel sick.

I posted this on the Electronics Recycling Center thread, but it seem appropriate to add here...

You might want to check out this site which is affiliated with Costco:

They will pay you a nominal fee for some items and even items with no recycling value (e.g., CRTs) still come with a prepaid shipping label. You will need to find a box, I guess, but most of the alternatives are not very eco-friendly.

Place it on the roadway in Maryland in the early morning hours (strange pick-up times), apparently cars travel there and they should take care of it for you. If not, place it in the ole compost heap, along with styrofoam, diapers, and plastic bags.

I'm not a Costco member, so that Green Sight thing doesn't help me.

Call Purple Heart, they took four out of the five I put out for them. Not sure why they got picky with the last one, but my problem is smaller now...

In Prince Williams County the land fill on 234 accepts 5 CRTs a day but is only open on certian days of the week.

Give them to a Fraternity at UVA, UMD or Washington and Lee. They'll smash them for free.

Or do it your self: head to the nearest high school football stadium and throw it off the press box.
