Did anyone even know about this? I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned here.

What type of moron would buy a house thinking that their kids would only attend one school right down the street? How stupid are people these days!

I'm sorry, but Carly Mannava is a bit over the top here. Her kids are INFANTS! Without starting an entirely new redistricting thread or arguing the merits of the West County boundary change, anyone buying a house in FXCO expecting that school boundaries will remain constant for 10+ years is not doing enough due diligence.

People who bought in Crosspointe 10-15 years ago were not happy that their children ended up at Hayfield when the "promised" South County HS was not built according to their timetable. What would have happened if Lorton Prison was not shut down or another development plan moved forward?

Anyone buying a home and expecting the schools to remain the same for fifteen years is living in another reality. The administration changes, the teachers change, the community changes. All these factors contribute to the school and its performance, good or bad. Hell, the elementary school in my neighborhood has had three different principals in nine years. I think there are only about four teachers out of about 70 staff that have been there the whole nine years.

I find the level of dismay equally ridiculous given that Fairfax County schools are all well above the nation's average. Sure, one may be better for your little tommy than another, but then again, that other school may be better for another person's kid. Fairfax offers a multitude of academy programs that shift the kids from their home schools anyway and there are always the magnet schools like TJ if you've got a kid that excels in a particular area.

Most kids are just trying to get the hell out of high school and get on with their lives. Whether they graduate from South Lakes, Oakton, South County (Stupid name), or Woodson isn't going to matter in the long run. A diploma from Fairfax County schools is what you're aiming for.

That's right. High school sucks. Or at least it used to. Has it gotten any better? Is there still an unofficial caste system?

+1

Diploma is the goal.

I went to chantilly, and never for a day did my parents wondered if it was a good or bad school.

REAL EDUCATION STARTS AT COLLEGE.

HS is just a place to keep you off the streets, between 8 am and 3 pm

I was thankful for the article... from what little I read previously on the topic, I had no idea that the whole issue REALLY comes down to property values. Homeowners in those districts are mad because they hold the racist view that if their house now falls in a non-white majority school district that their housing values will suffer in comparison to nearby neighbors who are in the "good" district.

I was naive and thought the arguments all of these parents going back and forth had something to do with quality of education for their kids... I had no clue that is all a smokescreen for housing value protection and is rooted in racism.

"Do we move?" Mannava asked. "Private school? I'm scared to death."

LOL! talk about overreacting.

that's not entirely true. sure there are a lot of jackasses who dont learn shit but there are also those who actually do learn. that being said, schools havent been focused on education for over 100 years.

"This whole process has pitted neighbors against neighbors, friends against friends, communities against communities," said Fox Mill resident Jennifer Kyle Herd. "We don't trust each other, and we don't trust the School Board."

LOL, I don't trust my friends and neighbors either. They're a bunch of selfish motherfuckers just like me!

Also had to laugh at the bitch in the article....if she lives in a 6600 sq ft house....she should be able to send her damned kids to any private school around here.

stupid bitch. she acts as if reston high school would be bad for her kids. 99% of the country envy's the quality of education that reston high school provides. I'm tired of these holier than thou school shoppers saying that some FCPS schools are no good. I mean if you don't like the school, just send your kids to private school. As 'duh' wrote above, living in a 6600 square foot house, she can more than afford to pay for it.

Everyone knows South Lakes sucks and is a ghetto school. The cops patrol the halls to protect the whitey IBs from getting jacked up. South Lakes is for losers. Oakton is the best. Westfields aint bad, but they cheat at football.

I know Ms. Herd. She's feisty, but she is not a bitch. She doesn't live in a 6600 square foot house either (hint: no one does in FM. If you wanted classmates with 6600 square foot homes you should have plotted to get Langley. I heard they all have big screen TVs too.) Ms. Herd's TV is very small

Did you read the article? It features a woman named Mannava who lives in a 6600 sq ft house and is pissed about school redistricting. Your Ms Herd merely supplied a quote for the article.
