FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. -- Fairfax County police are warning residents about an e-mail extortion scam.
Police said they have received several complaints about residents receiving e-mails that say the sender was paid by someone to kill the recipient. The e-mails say the recipient can pay a fee to spare his or her life and request an e-mail reply to discuss the money transfer, police said.
Police warned citizens not to reply and said the e-mails are part of a scam to obtain personal information, which could lead to identity theft
Police are asking people who receive these e-mails to report them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
