This web site will answer all your questions and has the application to fill out. The fee is minimal and there is not a test.

Not really. Seems pretty mundane....

Doesn't strike me as kick ass, but it's something to put on a resume.

secretaries will get a slight bump in pay if they are a notary. I assume the same would be true of paralegals in law offices and clerks in corporations.

I'd do it as a service to someone I worked for, but doing it on the side would be done for the love and not the money. Some clients don't speak English and you need to account for that, sometimes it is an elderly person who can't find their documentation and identification, fuel may eat away the money you would make, sometimes people will try to talk you into putting your seal on something that isn't supposed to be notarized at all, etc.

If you decide to do it for extra income then take a class and buy insurance (if it is available in Virginia, I'm guessing so). If someone fools you and the document ends up a forgery with your seal on it, guess who they sue for wrongdoing? Best to get some training outside of just reading the requirements.

Also, you aren't a notary for the County... it is a state-wide appointment so you can notarize a document within the boundaries of the state. About the only thing Fairfax County has to do with it is their courthouse is where you will pick up your appointment certificate and take your oath.

It probably wouldn't be too bad, but first you really need to ask yourself if you think you got what it takes to become a notary public. It's a major decision and not something you want to walk into without being 100% prepared.

The most you can charge is $5.00 and virtually everyone that asks is someone you know (and don't charge). You're lukcy to get 2-3 requests a month.

It's more of a convenience if you are a a job where lots of doc's need to be notorized.

I know several notaries, most of whom do it because it's useful as a part of their regular job (example: legal secretary whose boss does wills and trusts). They uniformly say it is not much of a source of extra income and that the average person who wants things notarized is so clueless that it becomes more of a nuisance than anything else. A notary is usually not supposed to notarize a document that was not signed in front of the notary, for example, but a lot of people will sign something and then "send it to be notarized" and get mad when the notary says "no can do."

Of course, you could also join the National Notary Association and take their certified Notary Signing Agent training. Then you can handle loan closings. Generally, you'll make $60 for less than 2 hours worth of light work, sitting there signing papers..

Like a previous poster said, that's pretty mundane, but it keeps me in pocket money so I can use all of my paycheck to get rid of debt.

First - go to Notary School ( not to be confused with nose hair school)

Then go out and stand in public.

That's it, then you are a notary public.

Some companies will pay for your notary license so you might want to check on that. There are so many places with notaries though, like most banks, and they charge $2, free if you are a member.

I loved being a Notary Public. I became one when I worked in a small law office. I was not allowed to charge for notary services at work; my boss paid for my application, stamps, seals and it was just part of my job.

A notary then (10 years ago) could charge $2.00 (per notarial act, not per page)as mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Charge more and you could lose your license.

All that a NOtary Public is doing is verifying that the person signing the document was identified and witnessed signing the document. In other words, show me your driver's license, sign your name on the document and I will attest that you signed your signature in front of me. Period.

Many, many people have no idea what a notary's purpose is and yes, they'd show up with a pre-signed document and want me to "put my stamp and seal on it." I'd make them create a new document or simply re-sign in my presence, if possible. Other would ask me to notarize someone else's signature. Uh, no. The lesson would begin again.
