I loved being a Notary Public. I became one when I worked in a small law office. I was not allowed to charge for notary services at work; my boss paid for my application, stamps, seals and it was just part of my job.
A notary then (10 years ago) could charge $2.00 (per notarial act, not per page)as mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Charge more and you could lose your license.
All that a NOtary Public is doing is verifying that the person signing the document was identified and witnessed signing the document. In other words, show me your driver's license, sign your name on the document and I will attest that you signed your signature in front of me. Period.
Many, many people have no idea what a notary's purpose is and yes, they'd show up with a pre-signed document and want me to "put my stamp and seal on it." I'd make them create a new document or simply re-sign in my presence, if possible. Other would ask me to notarize someone else's signature. Uh, no. The lesson would begin again.
