50 Gallon Gas Hot Water Heater Install Cost
Posted by: Scammed ()
Date: January 02, 2012 02:30PM

Can someone please tell me how much they've paid in labor in the past 6 months to replace a gas water heater. I just paid $1750 for a new heater, valve and labor. The valve was $100, the heater about $895 (per Internet prices) and labor $755. The labor expense seems very high. It took 2.5 hours to install. Feedback is appreciated.

The thing is heavy, did you make the guy move your new heater down a set of stairs and your old heater back up them? I would charge 200 just for moving the damn things, let alone connecting all the piping. Since it's gas he has to be extra careful connecting the gas lines, leak test it, etc, a lot of tedious work

No, both the new and old were bought into the basement from ground level via a sliding glass door.

I was out of town so my wife had to handle the situation. They told her the old heater was leaking gas. Figured I'd handle pricing when I got home. In the end they'll (a supposively reputable contractor) will pay in that I'll post the info on-line which will make at least one or two individuals think twice about using the contractor.

Every time I had a water heater go bad it was leaking WATER not gas.

I paid $1200 for 50 gallon gas water heater installed by Croppe Metcalf

I wanted and researched the heck out of the tankless water heaters but in a townhouse there is no way to meet ventilation code unless it is an end unit.

hosed big time...

cost of installing a hot water heater should not be any mroe than 2-300 bucks tops. now if you live in a mcmansion you regularly get hosed on pricing. I love crop.... but as of late their prices have been going up. I just got a price to plumb in 15 feet of gas line Simple job, exposed ceiling. 1700 bucks from micheal and sons..

Angies list is almost as a big a scam as the BBB. Angie will ask contractors for money for premium placements and removal of bad reviews.

You got a water heater that was leaking gas replaced for less than 2k and you are pissed off????
You need to go volunteer at a burn center for a few days.
Sounds like this contractor took care of your family when you could not.

I told my bitch wife to turn off the gas and take cold showers for awhile but she could not wait for a few days while I was in AC.
This plumber guy came along and ripped me off, she paid him with my mastercard and this caused me to run short of cash in AC!
I barely had enough cash to make it home.

Hi,
We pay about $400-450 for 50 gallon gas.
We charge $400 including one new ball valve for labor.
We mark up the heater $250.

$1100ish.
We do 10 per week.

Michael & Son are scammy. If you are getting prices and they insist that your spouse be with you to review the quote, they're going to upsell the shit out of you. I pressed them for a price and they priced themselves out of the running.

Also, why even buy a hot water heater? If the water is hot, it does not need to be heated. Do you get your water from a hot spring under your house?

I suggested he wait until Monday and call a few other places but he had the "must have it to NOW" syndrome. The 'MY Plumber' people prey on these people and likely the fact that he is elderly too.

Do you need a permit to replace an existing gas water heater?

Seems that if it is connected like the old one and doesn't leak gas or water, would the county know or care?

Most contractors don't get it, and it's more of a formality/visual inspection to make sure they hooked it up correctly.

I bring this up because yes, the OP got overcharged, and if the contractor didn't get one the OP could, at his disgression of course, approach the contractor for amends using this as ammunition.

We would need more info as to the contractual terms that were signed for and the actual work that was performed.

I could be wrong but I'm right 99% of the time.

WTF?

Was it 4" Sch80?
Were they going to install seismic restraints?
Pour concrete housekeeping pads and erect supplemental steel?

I'll bet it was a 1/2" line that they would coupling the shit out of with random length pieces they already had on the truck, use regular teflon dope and only put two hangers, the cheap wire hook kind, on it and call it a day.

$350 max job.

9/25/12 just paid $1300 for a 50 gal bradford white heater. now, the guy that is making "fun" of people that have questions, need help, etc is an ass. As we get older, those of us that can no longer do things we COULD do in the past, now have to hire those that still can. I thought $1300 was high, but I now see that it is w/in range. Ours was leaking gas, too. I was at work and my wife called our plumber. Enough said. He may have saved our lives too.

Sounds good, glad your happy with your purchase. People, a few tips to save yourselve $$ and frustration;

- Learn the basics. At the very least know how to turn of the gas to your water heater and the main water line coming into your home.
- Doing so will buy you time in cases of emergency.
- Try to do a little research before buying. Before you have someone come out find out what brands they use and look them up. I looked up the Bradford heater you mentioned and it looks like they gor for $400 to $600. Any competant repair man should have been in and out in 2 hours. You have to decide if $350 an hour (give or take) is a fair price to pay.
- Get a Carbon Monoxide detector so you don't have to wonder/worry.

Lastly, don't sell yourself out with questions and statements like "its worth your life", "he may have saved our lives", etc... OF COURSE YOUR LIFE IS IMPORTANT, but these are sucker statements schlepped by salesman. There's a lot of dangers and risks around the house, gas is just scarier because it spooks people. Just because one company charges a lot more doesn't mean their going to do it better than someone else...the profit may go to the owners new boat or whatever. Don't let your guard down with someone making a fear based argument.

Good luck....

There is no set price for a water heater. You get a bid and you have the right to turn it down. This is America!
If you have gas piping in your home you need to know how to shut it off. Get an emergency shut off wrench and keep it handy. The emergency shut off wrench has directions printed on it so almost any idiot can get the gas shut off.

Angie's list is definitely NOT the place to look. They accept advertising and give preference to those that pay........my go to for most products is Consumers Report dot org......they accept no free items, test independently, are non-profit and will not "endorse" any product in company's ads.....have not tried Checkbook.........only thing is Consumer Reports does not evaulate contractors.

There are many different types and brands of gas water heaters. Most of my customers have no idea what they have or need -- just that it is a xx gallon gas water heater. Most customers, when they call, tell us they need a new water heater -- not really knowing if they really DO need a new one -- there are several things that can happen with a gas water heater that would lead one to think they need a new one, when, in fact, all they need is a repair. When a customer of mine thinks they need a new water heater I first go out and see what the problem is. Half of the time I have them back in business within half an hour without the expense of a new water heater.

Other companies will take advantage of a customer who tells them they need a new water heater by giving them what they asked for -- a new water heater, whether or not the needed one.

As far as gas water heater variants, there are too many to list, but here are a few: natural vent, power vent, direct vent, standard recovery, quick recovery. There are huge differences in cost of each of these units and, usually, substantial differences in the amount of labor and material required to install them, whether they are simple swap-outs or new installations. A 50 gallon gas water heater replacement can vary in price from roughly $1,000 to $3,000, depending on these factors.

Most of the 50 gallon gas water heater replacements that I do end up costing around $1,100. This would be for a basic swap-out of a 6-year warranty, natural gas, natural draft State or A.O. Smith water heater. This includes me hauling away the old unit and replacing any valves that don't work. I also take care of any problems (pilot won't light, leaks, etc.) that may arise with the water heater for the 6 years that the unit is warranted by the manufacturer. I don't know of any others who will do this. Some other companies charge a little less, but most charge much more -- somewhere in the range of $1,500 to $1,800.

You don't always get what you paid for, but sometimes you do -- sometimes you get more. All it takes is a little research online and talking to family, friends and neighbors. For online research go to Yahoo, Yelp, Consumers' Checkbook, Angie's List, etc. Read the reviews and don't just base your decision on the number of "stars" a company has been given.

If you're handy, do it yourself, but don't buy a water heater at Lowes or Home Depot -- go to a plumbing supply house and buy a State, A.O. Smith, Rheem, Ruud or Bradford White -- my preference is State, but all of these brands are basically the same. Stay away from Whirlpool, Maytag, GE and Kenmore, unless you are very handy and can tackle the occasional replacement of the gas control valve and pilot assembly after waiting a few days to receive it from the manufacturer. You will pay a little more for the unit from the supply house, but it is definitely worth it in the long run.

Doing the job yourself will save you several hundred dollars up front and is relatively simple. But if you make one little mistake, it could end up costing you a lot more than if you had hired a plumber who had previously installed a thousand of these things. I have seen many do-it-yourself installations that caused several thousands of dollars in damage. I have also seen many that were just fine. I have only seen a few bad installations by plumbers.

I know that either way you go, it's an expense that you probably didn't plan for and you want to spend as little as possible. Hopefully, my input will help you make the right decision and save you a little bit of that hard-earned cash.

Good luck.

My hat is off to "a plumber" for the best post on this thread. Thank you sir for
sharing your wisdom and your hard won experience. You obviously know what you are talking about. I will be saving your remarks both for myself and to share with my clients. Your point about servicing the unit over its life cycle is well taken. Most of us are not thinking of the long haul; we just want that hot water/shower right now. Those of you who have taken cold showers or even "navy" showers are a hardier breed. I think some outfits take advantage so it is good to hear there are decent people out there doing real work for fair prices. Thank you

Go to Lowes and save yourself the headache. 50 gallon brand-name heater AND installation for LESS than $1000.

Sick and tired to be taken advantage of by fly-by-night HVAC contractors...

My 12 yr old Rheem kicked the can today. Called a local plumber advertised in our homeowner assoc. magazine and he came out on Columbus Day. Every major hvac/plumbing contractor was booked with appts. The local plumber quoted me 965 for an A.O. Smith gas 50 gallon htw, new shut off valve, install and haul away. He can do it in 3 hours. Looked up the model he wants to use and it retails for about 475 online. We'll give him our business.

here it is. a water heater is not hard to install. a pain in the ass if you have never down it. if you have it done by a plumber it can become costly depending on what is needed. several estimates are advised. all parts can run as much as $500.00 or more depending what is needed. pay now or pay later if it is in need or questionable then replace it while you are there. if you can't do the install yourself than $350.00 is not a bad price for labor. $800.00 to $1000.00 is not an out of range price and is pretty much standard. just my opinion. thanks

I use a cold water heater in my home.

Why would you want to heat water that is already hot??

I did my first one 6 years ago moved and did another this year - its easy. You need a hand truck ($40), a torch for sweating the pipes, pipe cutter, solder, teflon tape, wrench, copper pipe(s) maybe a new flexible gas pipe and dope for that. Basically its a big burner over a tank you just have to hook it up. So you can get that and the tank for $500 easy. Plan on a half day of running around and installing. Your garbage co. will take it for $50 or you can put the old in the box the new one came in and run it up to the FFX Co transfer station yourself.

This guy is right. If you're still not sure just take an HVAC class at NOVA or something ($160 or so a credit?), you still come out cheaper AND you know what you are doing for next time.

Buy from big box stores and have one of their installers do it. Following Angie's list advice I had a quote from Richard's for 2.4K for 50 gal unit. It cost well below 1K from Lowes. Angie's list signup and Richard's visit cost me about $200, 20% markup for nothing!

200-300 for installation ! ! !
What . . . did you hire the next door neighbor after normal work hours handiman? And, Was the new tank already on site? And, did the installer leave the old tank for the homeowner to dispose? If not,

what century (the 20th) and where do you live - - in rural South Carolina or Mississippi)?

Licensed plumbers these days charge 100.00 just to make the trip! If you call them after hours, they charge 180-185 per hour.

Let me guess, your plumber is Michael and Sons, or HH FURR?

If my plumber was charging me $100 just to come to my house, I would tell him to fuck off.

I got a 50 gallon AO smith installed for $850.00

I had my shower faucet valve replaced for $220.00. (He had to solder, took a couple hours.)

Purchased 50 gal gas Hot Water Heater ($800) from the plumbing place behind Marlo Furniture. They delivered it for free.

My plumber installed it with overflow valve with a pan under the heater for $250.

One needs to obtain estimates before buying and getting service/installation.

Take your time and research before buying.

uh huh and twisting on a valve you didn't make is how hard ?

did they recalculate the gas pressure since it was incompatible with the new made in china equipment ? was it rocket science ?

a homeowner getting a gas heater isn't assumed to be a builder, and a builder is assumed to know better

if your county owns and runs businesses that pay crap pay to migrant or illegal workers to do skilled labor, because the town is a sham

you come into court saying you have damage (likely caused intently so that they will be hired again to do the same job)

should the insurance company have to pay out? could not the insurer argue you lapsed your contract by taking a bottom basement price in a county running illegals to vote democrat ?

if i were the insurer, i'd say: no. you didn't hire skilled labor and gave them incentive to botch the job. the insurance pool is for people who aren't scamming the system

I installed a 50 gallon gas water heater today and I charged 900 for parts and labor. The water heater cost $440.00 that is not including the copper pipe I had to use to reroute the plumbing. Getting the old one moved can be a pain as it is full of sediment and weighs a ton, then placing the new one on a stand, it is heavy too. And then changing the plumbing to make everything fit. But the amount you were charge was very steep unless you got an 80 gallon water heater.

Hot water Installation cost vary according to installation company charges and product material. So it is difficult to say fix price for installation. For better suggestion, You will contact with two or more installation company like http://allweekheating.com/ and take the quotation and compare it.

He charged me $1700 to take out my 50 gallon water heater and put in an 80 gallon replacement. Two of them did the install, they were out of there in about 75-90 minutes.

I'm a cheap bastard who doesn't like getting ripped off. I have installed two 40-gallon gas water heaters myself (I'm not a plumber). The first one was in 1997 and cost $142 at Home Depot. The second was in 2011 and cost $368 from Sears. Also spent maybe $65 for an overflow pan, other parts, tools, and disposal fees at the Fairfax County landfill. Bottom line cost for two water heaters installed: $575.

Unfortunately, when the current one gives up the ghost in about 2025 I'll be an old geezer and might not be physically able to install a third one myself.

Public Service Announcement: that "overflow pan" is the best $65 you can make. Chances are, if your water heater leaks, it'll leak a bit, not fail catastrophically. And so in most cases, that pan will save your basement. If there's a floor drain nearby, you can run a hose to that, and a moderate leak will be contained indefinitely.

I wish I'd known about these pans 30 years ago, before we had a minor water heater leak that cost us a lot of money and hassle.

In case you're wondering, these pans look like giant round cake pans. Hmm, you could make a huge cake in one, too...!

That's a good deal, surprisingly good for a big store. Probably $500 - $700 cheaper than the infamously overpriced Michael and Sons.

Personally I would drop the protection agreement and save that money, hot water heaters are pretty simple and don't break that often. When they do, they are usually getting old and need to be completely replaced not repaired.

except that most homes in the area don't need an expansion tank.

Get a minimum of 4 estimates, throw out the highest and lowest (usually).
Have the contractor come to your house and look at it. Do not get over-the-phone estimates.

Read the contract. Understand that sometimes the old flue needs to be replaced (some cities etc. require it upon WH replacement) gas lines water lines, valves etc.
Have the complete job with extras in the contract so there are no 'add-ons'.

Demand the job is permitted and inspected!
Make sure you get the green tag.

Horrible advice.
You don't need it until you need it.
Yeah, you could just go with proper relief valves per Fairfax code.
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/dpwes/construction/water_heaters.htm

But expansion tanks are just a few bucks more than a good relief valve and by design way less prone to failure.
