He received pain meds (probably opiates), which dont go well with alcohol. My guess is he was probably a drunk with previous liver failure issues and the opiates and the alcohol finished him off.

In all fairness we werent there and dont know how the hospital visit went. Is it possible that the hospital missed something, absolutely. But at the same time its also very possible when he got there he kept just saying he was fine or didnt tell them all his symptoms ect and just wanted to leave. They can only work with the information given to them and arent going to just do a bunch of random tests if they have no reason to believe they would find anything.

What do you want to bet this dude didn't have insurance?

If he did, he'd still be laying in a bed at Inova recovering from liver surgery.

Inova Fairfax treats high-income local residents with great insurance like shit on their shoes. NoVa grads with an lpn think they're hot shit with their flight jackets crap on the taxpayers who funded their so-called education.

A few thoughts...

Docs don't know the insurance when ordering tests and prescribing treatments.

This guy probably had x-rays and CT scans that all looked normal according p professional radiologist interpretations. If the tests indicated anything th obviously he wouldn't be "kicked to the curb."

He was given specific discharge instructions to monitor his condition for changes and to seek emergency treatment if those symptoms arose. He did not do so. He died.

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees. If all the medical tests say you're ok, then who can possibly be blamed? Seriously?

Or maybe sometimes god just wants to take someone.

All good points. Without having been there to see what happened you cant just assumed he was kicked to the curb for no reason when he shouldnt have been. They do have some Drs that arent so great but overall Fairfax and Fair Oaks hospitals rank very well overall in the country. Also they have people who take notes on what is said during the visits now so Im sure it will come out if the either the DR didnt listen or if the man was saying he was fine and wanted to go home. If you arent under arrest they cant force you to get treatments.

He did not speak English. You can't blame Nova for not being able to understand him.

A quick scan of google results seems to be that its kind of hard to find when it was caused by brute force like a crash. The area around it will mask what you would usually be looking for from the extensive injuries, and that small lacerations dont require surgery. How accurate all that is i dunno im not a dr just what I found

You do know if you have no money they dont charge you right. They specially tell you that if you make under a certain amount it will be free and that you can apply to have your fees waved ect.

The hospital has on site interpreters and even more interpreters available via a third party telephone based company. Communication with people is as unrestricted as possible at that hospital. You can speak Kenyan or Cantonese and they got a bitch on the phone within 2 minutes ready to talk for you.

They don't do a fucking thing for free. But they do have to accept whatever the government reimbursement is, which will be far less than what they'd like.

They have every incentive to get indigent patients outta there ASAP. Even if they end up settling with this guy's family, they're still way ahead of the game.

The ER doc probably didn't speak English either. Everytime I've been there, they're all foreign trained, fresh off the boat types. But I guess they work cheap which is all that counts!

Its free for the guy who isnt paying and getting services and youre kidding yourself if you think that doesnt happen
