I need to replace the roof to my house.
I'd posted awhile back about a leak that I spotted and my concern if there would be mold.

No mold, I just know that I've got to replace a board or two.

don't use Cardinal Roofing or Pioneer Roofing.....bad luck with both.

Harry with HB Services did a great job on my new roof. He's been in business for 25 years and has a solid reputation.

We've used Pond several times based on a recommendation from my father, who has also used their services. They do very good work and they're reliable. Not the cheapest, but a roof is not a place to try to cheap out too much because it's too important.

Some neighbors used Marshall Roofing. I contacted them for an estimate on a job once and they never responded.

Davis roofing I think they're in Lorton, they're about half the price of anyone else and they replace all your vent and stack gaskets and they even carried replacement boards on the truck. They did me right

Try Function Enterprises...they are mostly commercial but I've heard they might do private homes too

There are four issues of the magazine per year plus periodic special reports, but more important by far is real-time internet access to their ratings of nearly everything. These are a wonderful resource worth many times the paltry trinkets that you are asked to pay for them.

You can easily spend $20,000 and up on an even moderately complex roofing job, so it will pay to do your homework on this one. Replacement of stack and other gaskets for instance is standard, not some extra frill, and the same is true for carrying and installing replacement plywood deck panels. All this should be specified in detail in your contract. New deck panels are likely to be 4x8-foot, 5/8-inch plywood graded CDX, but the grade and thickness should be specified up front. The variables for thickness are the spacing between your rafters, the slope of the roof, and the load expected from the roof itself and from natural factors such as wind and snow. Often a contractor will include X number of deck panels free then add a charge per panel for each one needed after that. Need of course is in the eye of the beholder, and as you don't likely want to be up there following these guys around, be sure you have a good feeling about your crew. There may very well be rot or other damage in elements other than the deck panels. There is no point at which it will be any cheaper to replace or repair those than when you already have people with the tools and expertise to do the job standing on your roof. The same of course goes for damaged flashing, drip edges, ridge vents, and other roof elements. Be sure to discuss the details of the whole nine yards of your project with the estimator who comes and tell him what you want done, then make sure it is all clearly spelled out in your contract. You can't do that of course if you have no idea what you are talking about, so spend a little time on the internet to learn the basics of what a roof system actually is and what it actually involves. This will vary by roof type (asphalt, cedar, slate. etc.), but in any case, being at least minimally conversant with what's involved will save both you and your contractor of a lot of problems, so don't skimp on getting yourself up to speed.

No matter what, installing a new roof is going to involve a lot of banging and hammering. Ungodly amounts of all sorts of debris and crud are going to come flying out from the underside of your roof and fall on whatever is underneath. This may or may not matter to you, but assuming that it is possible, it may be worthwhile to at least poke your head up there before the work begins to see if there is anything you might want to cover up and protect. Saying "oops" a couple of weeks later doesn't do any good.

Roofing is an industry notorious for its shysters and low-grade fly-by-nighters. This is why the post above about doing your homework is spot on. I'd add that going with a larger firm with a well-established history will likely be worth any extra cost in the long run.

I don't think I'd have a roof put on in cold weather. One of the greatest advancements in asphalt shingles is the strip of tar that sticks the shingle to the one under it.

In the old days, shingles used to blow off on windy days all the time. In cold weather, I'd be afraid that the tar strip wouldn't melt.
