Goodbye, Hunter Motel

Looks like the Hunter Motel over in Lorton is getting knocked down. It's been sitting vacant for about a year now, so I figured it was only a matter of time.

that is so funny that you posted a thread about this motel because I was about to ask about the place. Ever since I enlisted in the Army I pass by the place when going to the PX at Ft. Belvoir and always wondered whether it was still in use or vacant. Shortly before Christmas I drove by and noticed some fire engines sitting out front and saw all of the doors open. Shame they are tearing the place down, I have a thing for privately owned, non chain motels around the area. Unfortunately a lot of them suffer the consequence of being used for either transients, county sex offender housing, or weekly tenants.

Why did it close down in the first place? That place always had a steady business...

The last few years the business had dropped quite a bit.

They had closed the restaurant a few years before the Motel closed.

About a month ago the FD was using the place to perform exercises.

I met old man Hunter a few years back, he had a restored Model T or something. Could have been original though. He was not hurtin, just old.

Now they need to move along to route 1 in alexandria and get all those motels too-Virginia lodge (aka "Killa lodge" my old high school friends call it, many a party thrown there...), brookfield inn (?), cedar lodge...

I stayed in cedar lodge ONCE last year (a desperate night where I was far too tired to drive all the way home)- it was about 11pm once i got in the bed and turned off the lights and waited 10 minutes, bugs started SWARMING the room. I RAN back to the front desk and DEMANDED my money back- without a word, the clerk refunded my money- with that adrelaine, I got home that night!

I will say the room was functional- there was a bed and working TV (with 3 channlels) and a bathtub and shower (old)- but the ROACHES running the place- and the nerve to charge me $65 for the night when days inn up the block was only $75 and 10x nicer!!!

Ok thats enough of my shady stories LOL- but yeah, tear all that down too!

All those seedy motels on 1 will be torn down eventually. BRAC 2005 is bringing a lot of new life to Route 1, and hopefully some decent business class hotels will be built shortly.

Yeah Belvoir's expansion will bring new life alright just not the new life we might be expecting. Have you seen the surrounding areas of some of the other Army posts in the US? Like Bragg, Ft. Bliss, and even Ft. Myer has some sketch places around the vicinity. Hopefully the new life won't bring a bunch of Barracks Rats lining up outside of the Tulley Gate or the single soldier barracks lol.

I wish.

This area could use more strip clubs and bars, but I don't foresee any expansion in those sorts of businesses due to the Belvoir expansion. Sad to say it though.

And Fairfax's demographics should keep at bay any chances of Route 1 turning into a mini-Fayetville.

Yup, definitely a murder there back in the early 70's. Some wacko shot and killed Mr. Hunter in a late night robbery. He was a pillar of Springfield. So much so that the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce's Annual Award is named after him. Everything must end. The Hunter Motel had its day but exterior entrance motels no matter how cheaply priced are simply unsafe. Just ask Connie Francis...Of course, the old Econo Lodge now Motel 6 converted to fully enclosed corridors and its still a drug pit.

Us philanderers NEED independent hotels and motels!

If you take your girlfriend to the chain joints, you get years of "Thank you for your recent stay" junk mail. Then the wife asks, "WHAT recent stay?".

I can see why you would say this- and I do agree there will always be a need for lower cost hotels since not everyone can afford to stay at the marriott...what they should do is convert those ""lodges" on rt. 1 into extended stay hotels- something like value place in gainesville...and put up a LARGE 5 or 6 story hotel something like a days inn but with similar pricing to the cheap hotels that way now- and they can even have a block of rooms that go by the hour- if i was a developer and could afford such a project I would! Build solid middle-class weekly stay housing (for the military and their families) and ONE BIG building so all the "lower class" patrons have a CLEAN, SECURE place to do their business in. I'd have extra security, etc to make sure things dont get TOO out of hand...

This was two years ago, and I since deployed to Afghanistan and came back...so it may be overcome by events.

Is there some tax benefit or writeoff if you left the FD come in and torch your house? Sounds like an interesting plan if you were going to buy a tear-down.

Lodger, do you have any more photos of hotels in NoVa, particularly those on Rt 1...old ones that have been torn down, I mean? In particualr, the Old Pines Motel accross from Roy Rogers, Wagon Wheel, and the one that got torn down about 5 years ago across from Famous Dave's next to the glass store?

Not postcards, but photos?

Just checking, judging from your posts, it seems you have an interest in old Motels, as do I.

In response to the question re: tax benefit - the answer is a qualified no. Up until a few years ago, it was argued that there was a charitable benefit conferable to a fire department because you were going through the process of tearing out dangerous substances (asbestos, paint, and the like), and you're basically giving free training time to the fire department.

The IRS has recently said, and the tax courts have upheld, the opinion that because you're still holding title to the land, there is no donation. You're basically having the fire department do the demo to the property for free.

Now, county tax or state tax may have different viewpoints, but for Federal purposes, you're no longer able to claim a deduction (some VERY narrow exceptions exist....).

I will check around and see what I have on my work computer next week. I was an employee at the hojo resturaunt that has been replaced by bob evans next to the springfield tower. There is a tribute website that is run by a guy I describe as a hojophile, he has thousands of pics of classic hojo locations from all over the country, Check it out!

I stayed in the hunter Motel a few times in the 80's, total shithole. Standard dirty sheets, garbage under most items (bed, radiator, etc), and ended up calling the police one of the times because someone was trying to beat down the door in teh room next to me. I'm pretty sure that there were truckstop whores cruising the parking lot.

The Hunter family owned a bunch of the land that was used for the parkway between backlick and rolling road, before you get to daventry. They had 3 really good ponds for fishing back there that a few of the locals knew about. We used to sneak out there on occasion to go fishing. After the county snatched up the land and bought them out for the parkway and they abandoned their house there, the ponds were fished out in about a week.

Lodger is slighty wrong.

The Springfield Howard Johnsons (hojo) motel was located on the opposite side of Commerce street where the Marriott Town Suites is now located. The hojo restaurant was located where the Bob Evans is now. This was back when the opposite side of Commerce street from the hojo motelwas Springfield's first McDonalds (no inside seating) which is now an Asian restaurant.

Just a minor detail!

Actually there was a McDonalds on either the corner of Old Keene Mill and Backlick or Amherst long before the one on the Commerce Street corner. It was really the old classic golden arches with no indoor seating. I used to catch the bus to Springfield to go to the Hobby Shop in the shopping center and grab a couple of Big Macs there during the mid to late 60s. I do believe that the one on the Commerce Street corner replaced it.. though I could be wrong..

One of my oldest franchisees in Pittsburgh invented the Big Mac and we test marketed in 1967. It was such a hit, we started selling it nationally in 1968.

68 to 69 would have been the period Ray. I would catch the bus at the stop in from of Mark Twain Jr. High and head up there.

Mr Kroc,
Maybe you can solve this mystery? Not sure if it's still there but not too long ago, in the McDonald's by Edison High School, among the old time pictures on the walls was one that showed a kid with a "Trippple". It looked similar to a Nutty Buddy ice cream. I had never seen or heard of this "Tripple" and I did frequent McDonald's as early as the mid 60s. I have Googled it and have been unable to find anything about it. What's the scoop? Was this some test item? Or maybe only carried regionally? You seem to be the one person that would know. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit FFXU!

Its sad to think after all the years of study buisness it has finally ended. People dont realize when they stop over for the night all the history that made the Motel a wonderful place. The Christmas gatherings and the down home country food wich was excellent. The banana cream pie that Dotty made. It was a great place and sad to see it go. Just because things get old does not mean its roach infested or unclean its 2012 but I wish we could leave history knowing that it was once a beautiful place. I love you Hunter Motel

DPZ and the BOS have been discussing it. Mostly seems to be contractors so far, though I expect the shopping strips along Backlick Rd to start disappearing/getting rebuilt once these office buildings start getting populated. (All of this development is driven by the BRAC efforts at Belvoir North Post, for what it's worth.)

Two of my co workers carried on an affair at the Hunter during in the early 90's. Our building was pretty close by. He had just gotten married and was looking to hop on anything. It was seedy back then.

They were high school kids who killed Mr. Hunter (which makes the post earlier that someobe recently met him even more disturbing).

Just gotta add amongst all the reminiscing that the hojo got waaay seedy by the mid eighties, but what i can't recall was if it was still a hojo or had the hotel been "re-branded" before it got knocked down? I remember seeing "lot lizard" types cruising the parking area...

I remember The Hunter Restaurant and Motel in 1955. My husband was Va.State Trooper and became Mgr of the Restaurant and Hotel. It was a very nice place. Food was great. The owner was Herbert Hunter and his mother. Herb was robbed and murdered. We lived on his mother's farm. My husband built the gift shop bewteen the restaurant and motel. Herb was a wonderful friend to my family. So sorry to hear of its closing.

Could you contact me at jamesrpgers@gmail.com? I have some old pictures of Uncle Herb, Shirley Hunter etc. Lots more taken at the old motel. I'm Jim Rogers. My mother was Mary Ellen Rogers, who worked for many years at the motel, died recently and we inherited some pictures. She was related to Uncle Herb through the Gillinghams. I was hoping to send some of these pictures to Shirley, but I think she may have passed away by now. We have also become curious about Uncle Herb's mother, who was either Edna Gillingham or Gladys Pelboubet--or they might have been the same person.

Here is the first batch of pictures. I'll post some more later. Hopefully you can recognize some of these people. I know Fred and Aunt Jenny (Jones) and of course my mother, Mary Ellen Rogers, but that's it. These were obviously taken after Uncle Herb died. I'll post some of him and other more recent ones later. I remember driving down Pohick Road years ago and seeing the fire dept doing a controlled burn on a house. A woman watching said she was the former owner of the house and it was being demolished for the Fairfax County Parkway. She also said she was the owner of the Hunter Motel.

Hi Jim, I'm Edy (used to be Hunter). My mom is Shirley and my dad was Herb. Mom is still alive; she's 90 years old but she has dementia. I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'd love to see your pictures, though. Have you been in the new Embassy Suites that was built where the motel used to be? They have pictures of The Hunter outside of their ballrooms/conference rooms. Also, some of the food on their menu is from the Hunter's restaurant.

I met the guy who killed Mr. Hunter probably around '96 or '97. He had just gotten out of prison and was working at Roy Rogers. He was an older half brother of some friends of friends I went to high school with. There was definitely something strange about him. Seemed like he had no emotions at all. Not sure if the prison time did that to him or if he was always like that...

It is nice that a big corporate entity like Hilton named the ballrooms/meeting rooms after Hunter. They didn't have to do that. Probably very few, if any, of the hotel staff and guests know why the rooms are called "Hunter", but some old timers around here do, and appreciate it.

I've found two different names for the 17-year-old that shot and mortally wounded Herbert C. Hunter at the Hunter Motel on January 7, 1976.

One source says his name was John Casanto, while the other says John Costanzo. His partner in the robbery was 18-year-old James M. Allen.

After Hunter died of his wounds at the Alexandria Hospital on January 28, the charges against the two were upgraded to murder, and the juvenile (Costanzo/Casanto) was certified for trial as an adult.

He plead guilty on May 5, 1976, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on June 4.

My family owned land, across what is now the ffx co Parkway, in the 60’s-80’s.
Our land was on the Hooes road park side of the parkway, and it extended from Lackawana to that cool Spanish roof tile house, around that dangerous uphill curve.
The Hunter Family owned land on the other side.
Great people, especially the father that was murdered. He would give the jacket off his back to help someone.

My Grandfather recently passed and he used to take me here all the time when I was kid for breakfast. I found this thread checking up on the place, sad to see that it's gone. Would have loved to go there again one last time. Thank you to the person who posed the images, it brings back a lot of memories, even though I have a feeling those photos are older than me.

They should have both been executed in the Virginia State electric chair when they could have been by 1983. Democrats are in the streets screaming for justice when there's never any justice from Democrats. Criminals are getting more depraved by the year with lesser and lesser punishment.

All Democrats in Virginia did when they got rid of the death penalty is let Virginia catch up to the vastly depraved state of California. The death penalty is not a punishment its a final ending of those who kill in the most heinous ways, robbing someone then killing them as well as doing the same as a rapist are vicious heinous crimes that demand the death sentence. Once executed killers never can kill again. We must end Democrat rule in Virginia in Nov 2021 to bring sanity and rule of law with justice back to Virginia , not pandering to race as no matter the race the crime with how it is committed is what counts
