GMU POLICE

Sooooo....I understand they have nothing to do for the break, but WTF. I live next to the campus and in the last 2 nights I have been followed almost all the way to my house for no reason at all. I was driving the speed limit, my car is totally legal, and never did anything wrong. Tonight was the last straw. My sister came to pick me and my buddy up from hard times in ffx city and was 100% sober. (she doesn't drink). Next thing we know lights are in the mirror. GMU POLICE were behind us, saying we went through a red light and almost hit a curb. She got a WARNING for going through a light, which was green, not even yellow when we went through it. My father was a police officer for thirty years and cant even believe what his kids are dealing with. He said it was a lot different, and more important stuff to do when he was in uniform. I HATE GMU AND FAIRFAX CO POLICE FOR THIS REASON. I know there is a few good ones out there, but they are over ruled by all the SCUM that patrols this area. I HOPE THEY ALL DIE A SLOW PAIN FULL DEATH. I HATE you under-educated FUCKS.

When it comes to GMU police, I beg to differ. I had been pulled over for "speeding" on University Dr back when it made sense and went all the way through Ffx City.
It was kinda hard to know I was being pulled over as the cop kept at least 8 car lengths behind me with his lights on. After maybe a quarter-mile of thinking "what the hell is he doing?" I pulled over on a residential street, only to have the cop berate me for not pulling over.
It's the only time I've been pulled over and actually feared being shot by a cop the SOB was so pissed off.

Unfortunately, the police are allowed to follow you anywhere for however long they want in public.

I agree that the mason police have always seemed to have some real amateur hour training.

On the other hand, I have to say that the Fairfax County Police are for the most part professional and damn good at what they do. Crime is in fact low in the county. This is such a cliche; but it's soo true what they say, "if you aren't doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about." And no, we do not live in a police state as many of you say.. I am a young "druggie" looking person and I have never ever been pulled over for no reason.

There are some bad apples, such as the cowboy swat guy that shot the unarmed doctor. I believe he suspiciously used excessive force and should be charged with manslaughter. If any of us accidentally shot and killed someone, Im sure there would be some negligent homicide charges involved.

But for the most part they're just honest guys doing a hard job.

I only hate that they are running speed traps on Braddock Road. My guess is they catch more non students than students at that spot.

I too have experienced the GMU cops tailing me on 123 and once down braddock.
apparently the gmu cops have very bad reputation on campus as well. some kind of study was done but apparently things still haven't changed with these numbnuts at mason

@friskydingo-I do agree that Fairfax police are for the most part professional. However they do have their bad apples, and some of those bad apples do end up doing traffic enforcement.

As for the GMU police, I never had any dealings with them. They do seem to be far more active off campus than other university police departments are. Of course this could be because they have two major commuter arteries running right next to their campus.

I would think if the GMU police have enough time to patrol 123 then they either are ignoring the crime on campus or if there is nothing to do on campus then maybe they have too many cops in which case some budget trimming should be done.

State law gives GMU police jurisdiction on roads adjacent to the campus. I'm sure writing tickets on 123 and Braddock makes them feel like real cops.

They used to follow people from the dorms to our house off campus and tell us not to serve people under 21 and they'd be watching us. I'd tell em to beat it.

Someone once told me Mason cops never show up to court though.

They are real cops. They go to the same academy as the other local departments their jurisdiction is just real small. That said, they do have some bad cops. Not all of them are bad, but like with anything in life you will have people that arent great at their job

GMU spends a lot of time and effort to fix all the problems that they are having with GM police.
It is a known fact; They have been having problems with them all the time.
My best recommendation is to not make it easy on them. Just give them shit.
make them arrest you and make more mistakes. GMU looks at those incidents are on going problems. I will not comply and accept any of their crap.
Ill make them arrest me just so it can be documented. Even the magistrate knows how stupid some of them are. I do have a friend that is a good GM police. He is one of the good ones. That is how I know they are keeping a close eye on them.
GMU also reads this web site. I sent the link to them on e time and since then they always look in here for all the stories that we tell.

This is the dumbest advice one could possibly give. Yea youll really show them when your in jail for not complying. Heres an idea if you think theyre THAT bad just stay away from campus. Problem sloved

Oh you mean the student in the library who has a criminal record for public disturbance and a history of violence who cornered a girl in a room and wouldnt let her leave then proceeded to threaten her and the police not letting the issue drop even after they let him go and kept forcing the issue over the period of 20 hours even though he said he desperately had to study and needed the room but found countless hours to waste on this? That guy deserved the charges he got and they were only dropped because he was a muslim. Not racist just the fact.

That said yes the other departments almost always have more pressing matters to deal with as violent crime on campus is very low. Theres some theft but over GMU is a very safe campus.

FYI though the GMU PD doesnt do parking those guys are entirely employed by the university and are a nightmare to deal with. Funny thing is a good number of them get arrested and/or fired for stealing quarters out of the parking meters which is why theyre switching to the electronic paying method

I wouldnt use those exact words but I was thinking the same thing. I went to undergrad and grad school there and the biggest encounter I ever had with them was seeing them getting coffee at a 7-11. Its funny how the person has never done anything wrong ever and its always the cops fault.

If you dont give them a reason to follow you 99.9 percent of the time they will go look for something else to do.

Or you can look at it how it actually is GMU cops = real police officers. They dont have the crime other departments have but they are real cops. Calling them anything else just makes it look like they caught you doing something.

Of course students dont want cops on campus, they want to drink underage, get drunk in public, and use all the drugs they want.

Although I have never personally had a problem with the GMU police, I have heard many bad stories from some of my collegiate comrades in Fairfax.

I'd recommend that any distressed GMU students transfer to VCU, where the police protect the student population, and are generally benign.

Memorable experience of a VCU police officer busting a large underage drinking party: "Ya'll are having a good party! Now everybody settle down now, people gotta go to work in the morning-"

See ya!

It would be a grammatical error not a spelling one. You have to have a very tiny mind to not know what is being said without them

Re: GMU POLICE

No, a grammatical error would be using, e.g., an incorrect tense or case. Omitting an apostrophe is misspelling.

and once again youre wrong. eg is the correct form for the term for example. ie means in other words.

its an internet forum not english class. nitpicking whether or not someone uses an apostrophe, which in no way hinders understanding the word, is what people do when their proven wrong and have nothing else to go on

Mason police are idiots. The routinely have large amounts of tickets tossed out of County court, and for a period of time had their ability to enforce traffic violations off campus revoked. I'm a cop, and those jokers give all cops a bad name.

I used to live in Fairfax, and got followed from just south of Red Hot and Blue to Zion, where he pulled me over. He said he pulled over for speeding, 49 in a 45. From 4 feet back, he said he smelled alcohol. Yeah, ok buddy. I let him have it. I told him the Fresca and Oatmeal cookie fermented in my stomach. He was so surprised by my reaction that he walked away, telling me to have a nice day. What a fool.

They used to be SCOP's, some were State Academy rejects, and now have their own internal hiring. They are still rejects, and all their hi-speed lights at night look like a giant baby blue blob, over-utilization of every available space for lights. Fools.

Mason Police Create LGBTQ Liaison Officer Position

September 9, 2011

By Daniel Walsch

Officer Michael Guston. Mason Gazette photo

Officer Michael Guston of University Police has been named as its new liaison to Mason’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) community. The position was established to enhance the relationship between the police department and the community.

“We believe the appointment of officer Guston as our official liaison to the LGBTQ community is an important step forward in opening up a formal line of communication to this community,” says Major George Ginovsky.

Ginovsky says Guston will work closely with the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning Resources, which is part of University Life’s multicultural education and research coalition.

Guston has been a member of Mason’s University Police Department since November 2010. Prior to joining Mason, Guston served nine years with the Fairfax County Police Department, where he worked as a patrol officer, a domestic violence detective and a patrol sergeant.

He also served for 11 years with the Culver City Police Department in Los Angeles as a reserve police officer and two years with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Phoenix as a reserve deputy.

LOL! Stumbled across this site and this post and had to share my GMU cop story.

I was riding down Braddock Road Eastbound and was just passing GMU on my left. I noticed a GMU police officer stopped in the left lane of Braddock Road going the opposite direction. It peaked my interest enough that as we drove past him, I kept watching him wondering why he was just sitting there, stopped, on Braddock Road. Then, I watched in horror as his reverse lights came on and he started going backwards down Braddock!!!! We pulled into the left turn lane to turn on Roberts and watched the scene unfold. The Westbound traffic that had been stopped at Roberts now had a green light and started to go forward. Of course the first cars in line weren't expecting a police officer to be driving in reverse down Braddock Rd. right in front of them and the lady in front promptly ran right into the back of the cop. Then 2 or 3 of the cars behind her all rear ended her.

I really wish we had somehow gotten our name and number to the people involved in that accident so that we could report that it was the cop's fault. I mean, seriously, what kind of an idiot, cop or not, reverses it down a major road.

i had a friend who lived across gmu off blacklick. you know those lines they have so you know where parking starts/ends? well my friends house just happened to be where the parking spot began. i parked my car there, with blinkers on to drop him off. next thing i know i had a gmu cop pull behind me and ask wtf i was doing.

i told him dropping a friend, IN FRONT OF HIS HOUSE. i told him i didnt give a F if i parked a bit outside the parking lines, because i had blinkers and it wouldve taken less than 20 seconds to move, untill he asked me wtf i was doing.

I too have been tailed by these numbnuts for no reason on sevral occasions. Not even on campus just driving home down Braddock to 123. Ridiculous.
I was in Wendy's at Fair city Mall recently when 2 of these fast arses, a guy and girl pretend gmu cop, in front of me. I guess being old the thoughts in my mind slipped out of my mouth to no one in particularly"Retards with Guns" I guess I shouldn't have said it out loud cause it seemed to upset the poor things.
I rather enjoyed actually.

Why do these douchebags need brand new Chev Camaro's to drive around? Too me seems to add to their douchebaggery behavior
And there's yourGMU student activity fees at work for you.

Somebody should really ask why a Sgt with Fairfax County Police would resign to go work with GMU PD. Lets see how long before an answer gets posted.

That does seem strange. State benefits are nowhere near as nice as the county. I would think his pay would be much less as well.

Sounds like he's done a fair amount of police work in his life. I imagine with being campus police, there's less "real" policing to be done. It's like retiring for cops, but they still get to make arrests, etc. and feel important

let me whip this out and put it here.... This is in response to what baloney knot or whatev er is talking about.

Some state systems have expansively defined Brady material to include many other items, including for example any documents which might reflect negatively on a witness's credibility.[7]

Sargent's pay is O-20 or so I've been told, this dude had to be around the midpoint. Figure $70,000

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/hr/PAY-PLAN/FY12/OPlan12.pdf

GMU starting Officer pay: $42,352.00

https://www.gmu.edu/depts/police/job.htm

Yes, why would someone resign and take a $27,000 pay cut and worse benefits for an entry level position?

The reason said "officer" is working for GMU is that he was suspended, with pay, by Fairfax County in a cheating scandal.

I had a run in with him a couple months back, and put in a complain myself, which was promptly whitewashed by the GMU department. I am taking it to the university as we speak.

And no, I am not a student. He turned a routine traffic stop into showing off for the young officer he was riding with.

many police are caught abusing the public trust for $$

but it's a serious charge and seldom proved

however if proved it's a serious charge - because they are paid well and are armed and have access to public militant target of persons infrastructure. because people end up dead or imprisoned if a cop makes them angry with false charges.

abuse that same trust is absolutely un-forgivable

I have heard many horror stories of Officer Michael Guston. He can not testify in court for a major trial only smaller traffic offenses. The only reason GMU hired him is because he is gay. Not saying anything is wrong with gay people, but it's a known fact that companies hire based on gender, sexual orientation, and race. Whatever the company or department needs on staff in accordance to the EEO is what they will hire. Guston should not be a police officer. I have heard many of his tactics are dirty. He told an officer in field training to use force with a taser for no reason what so ever.

GMU police need to stay on the campus, there should be no reason for these Barney Fife wannabes to off campus. They should only have juristiction on the campus proper, not on the state roads such at 123 and Braddock Road. Fucking 911 turned cops into overzealous retards.

If you would like, we can install devices on their police cars that lock the wheels when they try to leave campus, just like we use on our shopping carts.

GMU cops one step above mall cops. Shouldn't be allowed to drive real cars. Give them all Segways. Keep em off the highways .

Most cops are wannabe Navy SEALs, living out their indoc failure fantasies.

Whenever one get lipoy with me, I ask them if they'd like to come on my next deployment with me. Shuts them up every time.
