What does it take to get rid of a bad coach?
Posted by: SpartanFan ()
Date: December 21, 2011 11:42PM

My son played his freshman year at West Springfield under the Renner program, and was devastated when Coach Renner left. We encouraged him to 'soldier on' and give the new coaches a chance.

Coach JT Biddison was hired to take over the program, coming from Marshall with a record of 29-34. In spite of the fact that someone decided to replace a winner with a coach who had a sub-500 record, he made things worse by alienating most of the players the first 2 years, and has the distinction of consecutive losing seasons for 3 years now. While his staff has developed a solid defense (something Renner didn't care about), it's clear that the coaching skills are lacking at the top. We constantly hear about the lack of leadership from the players, and his ability to communicate with the boys parents is just not there.

I would not write what I am saying now except for the fact that the parents HATE him. Every home game there are parents yelling out "YOU SUCK, BIDDSON" in the stands. Who needs this? How can we get rid of this guy?

Make up some molestation charges that seems to be the quick ticket to eject an idiot out of there.

When you consider that Marshall won 1 or 2 (max) games per year before Biddison got there, you would have to say that his record (even though below .500) was a huge success. Marshall was devasted when he left. You should be happy to have him, and embrace him, rather than having the parents try to run the program...

Yes, for the smallest school in the county, 29-34 is a fantastic career record at Marshall, the past three years they're something like 5-25 I believe. Furthermore my son played for him and his staff and never had anything bad to say about him.

This is an extremely inappropriate forum to complain about your son not getting playing time by annonomously attacking a coach. The fact is they have showed improvement each year and will be a playoff team with all the talent returning this year. At a school like West Springfield, not bad at all.

There's your problem right there. Show some class, tell these folks to put a sock in it or volunteer to coach.

SpartanFan's son in ten years: "I don't like my boss, how do I get rid of a bad boss?"

SpartanFan: "Just like me, go on a public Web forum and anonymously post info like a true coward from our family should, here is a great example http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/765925.html"

SpartanFan is right. He may seem like a good coach, but he is terrible. His play calling is mediocre. West springfield has talent, but wont do anything special next year if he's calling the plays, or running the program.

Sounds like your son is getting some valuable life lessons at school.
This is good because it sounds like his father is a crybaby bitchboy.

I really hate all coaches.

If you even appear overweight then you do not desrve to be a coach.

This goes for football and swimming and ANY sport.

What you teach these football players and swimmers is that its ok to be fat.

Spartan Fan's criticisms are very, very difficult to discern. Most of the complaints center around the coach not communicating with the parents. Hmm, while coaches should communicate with parents over significant health and safety issues with their players, they do not exist to submit to every whim of pushy suburban parents.

In fact, what is perplexing is that Spartan Fan concedes that the coach has built a good defense. This makes sense to me from a programmatic perspective. Most suburban high schools (here, anyway, this is not Texas or Florida) rarely have top level Division 1 players, and the most replicable solution year after year is to develop a sound defense. Stopping the run consistently keeps the team in games.

I am no great fan of high school football - or more properly - I really love watching the game - but think the risk and reward schemes now present in high school football don't make sense, and question at times why it is taken so obsessively. But one enduring factor with football is the application of mental toughness and discipline that can carry well beyond playing days. In this vein, I am skeptical of Spartan Fan's complaints, lacking as they are in substantive content. Of course a good football coach is going to be tough. It is a sport that rewards a controlled form of violent abandon.

If I were a kid again, I would simply want my parent to be supportive. I would deal with the coaches on my own terms, and learn whatever I could from that. In my high school and Div. 1 athletic days, I was fortunate only to have really great people as coaches, so perhaps what I suggest is easier said than done. But really, parents should let their kids stake out their own territory with coaches unless a real health or safety issue is at hand. Doing otherwise does a disservice to the their kid.

Lots of whiny parents in West Springfield.

Our school is falling apart. Fix our school now. WAAH!

We don't like our old principal. We don't trust the new principal. WAAH!

The new football coach sucks. The parents call him bad names. WAAH!

What a bunch of wankers. Remind us again why people in West Springfield think they deserve any attention. Just because they don't go to Lee?

Biddison is a dick! He was the WORST math teacher and always had an attitude. The football players like him, but not his students. I was glad he left.

Try to get a job as an assistant. When he gets fired, you might be in line for the job.

Please don't say that 29-34 is a bad record at Marshall. Marshall is AWFUL. They routinely beat South Lakes (only because South Lakes was awful this year as well)

It's the AD's fault. If you have a problem, go complain to him/her. And hope that the team starts losing. Losing badly.

This is why I'm getting calls from parents when their kids are failing my classes.
It's always someone else's fault, never their kid's fault, and they are obviously learning this at a young age.
Glad I have tenure and can hang up on them when they call me. You parents are doing your children a huge disservice by behaving like this.

The current WS (Biddison) coach had a record of 29-34 over six years at his last school.....going to the play-offs in his 5th year running that program. The previous WS head coach (Renner) had a record of 29-30 over his first 6 years at WS.....38-41 over his first 8 years....making the play-offs for the rist time in his 9th year....then he had two great play-off runs with a pretty good DI QB...... It's very easy to criticize from behind a keyboard...or from the stands. Since Biddison left his last school, they have won 4 games in three years......

I love it when posters start commenting on some coach's play calling, etc. Please, other than watcing TV and listenting to sports talk radio, what do they know? I haven't seen WS play football in maybe 20 years, so don't know anything about the coach, but come on, people have no idea how hard these guys work. If he's mistreating the kids or teaching them unsafe practices or being unethical then you have a complaint. Otherwise, be quiet. I can guarantee you that there are very few people who will put in the time and effort for the paltry money coaches get. Seriously, if you think he's such a bad coach, do like someone else posted, get a job as an assistant, and work your way up to having the experience to apply for the job yourself.

Now Paul Wardinski was a buffoon and deserved to be removed. I base that on having had to deal with him when he was at another school.

Now that is something that needs seroius attention. Whether it's the coach not teaching proper technique or substandard equipment or sad coincidence, that needs to be addressed!

What I will say about Biddison is that when he took over at Marshall he didn't pay much attention to the Seniors that played. Understandably you have to focus on building the program. But as a senior I didn't like feeling second-class.

But in his defense, we had a horrible progam under Pete Salvano. He was a joke and had no staff by the time he left because he was terrible. Also, we went 0-10 the year Biddison came to Marshall so his record, if you take out that first year is a semi-respectable 29-24.

You got your wish all right.... Now you have no coach and nobody wants the job. Opened for interviews, closed, interviewed, now the job is reopened. No quality candidates. The school is a cesspool. Sex crimes, kiddy porn, thugs, and terrible YouTube videos.

JT made a great choice.

Two quickest ways to get a coach fired: 1) Spread rumor that he's racist; 2) Spread rumor that he's a Christian.

I coached at two high school for many years. The easiest way to remove a coach is by parents complaining to the AD. Or, by having respected coaches at the school discuss the issue with the AD.

This is not bragging, just stating a fact. I resigned from one school some time ago and shortly after the AD heard he got so upset that I left the program that he fired the head coach. Afterward I got multiple emails and calls asking me to return to the program. I would have but within a week I was already recruited by another school. I joined their program and stayed there through the season. Even during the season I was approached by two other schools to come join their program.

Let me say this: When you are a good coach words gets out and people find you. It is VERY - VERY - hard to find good coaches for high school sports. Most coaches are guys who don't know what they hell they are doing and it's more of a power trip for them. I coached because I wanted kids to learn how to compete. There's a huge difference.
