All those accomplishments...and you post this question on ffx underground...instead of maybe guidance counselors...or the actual colleges you want to go to....what a perfect example of book smarts and nothing else. You'll probably end up in your mom's basement with the rest of the regular posting retards here.

Seriously...why are you asking this question here? FCPS has a reasonably competent college advising program in every high school - maybe you should check there first. Personally, I would really question your judgment if this is the avenue you choose to get college advice.

Go the website college confidential. You will get lots more information there than you would ever glean here - including that relating to UVa admissions.

You should have written "Where can I expect to get accepted?" or, "Where should I expect to get accepted?"

I think you have a very high chance of getting into VT, and you have a okay-to-positive chance of getting into UVA (cuz of your high SAT and PSAT scores and the extracurriculars)

How is that bragging? 3.3 as a frosh?!? C'mon, even ESOL students can get a 3.3 in the FCPS system. His GPA only went up b/c of weighted grading systems for AP classes. Funny how the original poster complains about the Nazi grading scale but is willing to take advantage of the bogus system of weighted grades for advanced classes. As for his extracurriculars, are they that impressive? Most of those clubs are show up for a couple of meetings a year and you can put it on an application.

listen, AP courses are hard as shit, I took a good amount in my day, and I don't believe that the weights are "bullshit" at all

and its about upward trends - so what he didnt' do well in his freshman year? He was young and immature and it shows that he's improved and matured. Honestly cut the kid a break

you dont have to be a douchebag about it, u know - and with our grading scale, the curves are even more necessary - you know how much greater of a curve students in Montgomery and Howard county get? and with their easier grading scale.

and if he's VP of that club i dont think he just showed up for a couple of meetings.

what more do you want from him? i dont think he can turn back time

UVa recalculates your GPA and takes out gym and AP bonuses. So your chance there just went down the shitter. DOnt know about VT.

Now, statements like "FCPS has a reasonably competent college advising program in every high school "FCPS has a reasonably competent college advising program in every high school" shows that you have never been to a high school run by the FCPS, becuase there are a lot of terrible counsulers. When kids come to them and say "A kid keeps beating me up for my lunch money" many say "You should tell them to stop and talk to them about it."

I also have heard several counselors tell musicians that the "need to find a real career"

Referring to the "Nazi grading system" could be a red flag. Is this black humor or just ignorance?

Students with your qualifications have been rejected by VT and UVA. Find several schools that appeal to you and apply widely. You may be fortunate in being accepted at Harvard, Yale, etc. with a great scholarship.

A friend of mine has a four-year scholarship at Tulane U. based strictly on academics. Tulane is not easy to get into...it's over subscribed and is a great school.

If you're serious, check: school counselors; USNews&World Report; etc.
Good luck--but you can increase your odds with a little thoughtful preparation. Be sure to let us know what you decide.

black humor, sorry.

I understand.

and grader, why do you say that those curves are bullshit? i worked my ass off in my AP classes, especially AP US and AP Lang and Lit

And i know i was lazy in freshman year - you have no idea how many things i regret. Sophomore year was tough because of the exposure to AP courses for the first time, but I got usedto it last year.

I feel like all this work has been a waste now

You're in your senior year. Normal to feel that way. We all did. Anxious to move on.

Be assured that your AP work will pay dividends! My students received significant credit for their AP course work, allowing them to advance ahead of their peers and not to have to take several required courses. Your diligent work has not been a waste!

Here's a local URL that provides some good information:

http://www.tuitionrx.com/n/v/pr6onkkc5oec6/n7btzessnwcc

Don't worry about the curves...just keep on doing what you're doing and make it through this semester. It would be hoped that you and your parents have filed the FAFSA paperwork, if you seek financial assistance. See

https://www.fafsa.com

Pretty difficult in Fairfax County, if you are in an "average" family.

I think that early acceptance has an advantage and that's for you to decide; otherwise, apply to the type of schools in which you're interested, to include the out-of-state colleges. Remember that the non-Commonwealth schools frequently want a diversified (no code here: includes geographic) student body and will entice you with scholarship money.

In the end it's your decision. Just don't believe all the negative comments.

It is readily apparent to anyone with half a brain that the original poster is trying to sound out all of you losers as to whether you think that this academic record is worthy of admission to UVa, Tech, Maryland, Cal-Berkeley, MIT, Yale, NoVa, etc. The student is just trying to get a gauge on the level of intelligence and/or college admissions know-how present on this board.

Almost Ivy League, this board doesn't provide any collective knowledgable insight about what college this kid is going to be accepted to. He posted past midnight on a Monday evening. He's already applied to college and will receive his admissions letters in less than two months. By now, any reasonably intelligent person would have done his/her research to determine what college they might be accepted to (this is all established through the PROCESS OF APPLYING - you determine what schools are within your range).

As for what college you'll get into: you might have a shot at some private schools. At least you improved from Freshman year to Senior Year. Anyways, I'm smarter than you are.

The weighted system is bogus because as KeepOnTruckin pointed out, UVa (and any school worth a damn) eliminates them and recalculates. The weights are pointless, you should take AP classes because of the inherent advantages they have (college credit, challenges your mind, prepares you for college, future cost savings in tuition, etc.), not because of the weights to GPA. They are more difficult because you as a student are more capable of succeeding than your peers. By your rationale, those who take remedial courses should have their grades weighted down. Further, your comments about Montgomery and Howard county are pretty hollow considering that relatively the same percentage of students in Virginia and Maryland receive A grades whether the bar is set at 90 or 94. Teachers always have different ways of grading. Your assumption about grade discrepencies between jurisdictions is faulty on two premises. First, it assumes college admissions officers are unable to see and understand the difference between 90 and 94. Second, it assumes that teachers are unable to recognize, adequately evaluate, and properly grade the high achievers in their class.

i could care less what they see, i think for a 90% to be a 3.5 and a 94% to be 4.0 is unfair

my cousin in Maryland gets an 89.5 and gets an A (4), and i get an 89.4 and get a B (3).

pretty big difference if you ask me
and even if the colleges only compare me to other FCPS students, then whats the point? Doesnt it just make it more difficult for colleges to calculate and compare us?

However the kid in MD will have a much harder time getting into W&M/UVa et al because he/she is an OOS applicant whereas the Virginian is instate. It also depends if you are male or female. Female applicants are vastly outnumbering male applicants to top tier Virginia public universities. In an effort to keep the student populations somewhat gender-balanced, boys have a higher acceptance rate.

you have a high chance of getting into vt and vcu, no doubt.
mary washington as well, because it used to be a girl's school so they'll accept guys like that. and it is a very good school...most likely umd. and the obvious schools like radford, old dominion, christopher newport, and umd.
even though umd is good, look into penn state as well.

You are still missing the point. If the same percentage of FFX and MD students get an A, it doesn't matter what the numerical grade is. Roughly 1/3 of students get an A in a class in MD and FFX regardless of the numerical grade. Is this too hard for you to understand?

In spite of what the faux congressman said, be sure to checkout Tulane University, also known as the Harvard of the South:

http://tulane.edu/news/newwave/index.cfm

I think that the congressman's bitterness has to do with his rejection by the Tulane Law School. Maybe he got his law degree at LSU (...if you fail at Tulane you can become a professor at LSU.).

Have you come closer to making a decision? Have you received any offers? (Why am I presuming that you are male and a high school senior?).

I went to Tulane for graduate school. I went to a much better law school. Having attended 3 universities during my educational career, I think I have a pretty good basis for making the statements that I do. I stand by my earlier assessment of Tulane. It is no Harvard of the South, and is certainly not worth its cost in view of the great schools available here in Virginia.

same question,

You need to be aiming at tier 2 schools with that kind of GPA and SATs. Go to USNews and examine the schools ranked at 40 and below for national university category and 30 and below for national liberal arts category.

You said you are a 12 year GS. Earn your Gold Award and the GSCNC Silver Trefoil. Those are both application-enhancers.

I wouldn't focus so much on grades and what school you get into. They are NOT indicators of future success as the average student applies less than 5% of gained knowledge to their respective careers. Your choice of college may open certain doors that otherwise would not be available to you, however it is what you do once you are employed is what matters. That said, relationships and hard work at the office will equal far greater results than how you were graded in AP Physics. -§

I used to manage a project that had a bunch of lower-level analyst slots, which meant I was usually stuck hiring kids that were either straight out of college, or had 1-2 years of experience. And I always got a chuckle during interviews when they would brag about their GPA, or the credentials of their university- as if I'm going to base my hiring decision on a course they got an A in. Sure, good grades at a good school is an eye-catcher when you get bombarded with resumes, but it's not like I can pick up the phone and tell one of my clients "Hey, I found this great kid for ya, he got a 3.7 GPA, and got straight A's in math!" Yes, it's great you did good in school, but there is a reason they call this "the real world". We're more interested in seeing enthusiasm and critical-thinking skills, we want to hear your ideas on how you can contribute; we don't really need to know, or care, that you got a 4.0.

So remember, grades are numbers; we are more interested in the real person we are hiring...or not.

(ugh, the UVA and W&M candidates were always the worst:))

We find that the UVA and W&M new hires have a air of entitlement about them. More often than not, they are either shown the door because of work ethic issues or by just having poor attitudes.

Not to say that you can't encounter the same from other schools, it's just easier to base your hiring decisions in today's marketplace on a polished set of interviews and a thorough background investigation rather than what the applicant crafted on their resume (read: this is where your bullsh!t meter kicks in when you know the person is a trash collector and they say they were a sanitation engineer. Same logic applies across all industry groups).

I was once told a few years back by a mentor that a person with a great attitude, willingness to learn and well-rounded knowledge has much more value and ability to succeed than someone with a poor attitude and exceptional knowledge. Now that I've been out of school for 10+ years, I can't say I disagree. -§

I'm not trying to make a sweeping generalization here, but I've definitely noticed some of the same types of problems with folks from more prestigious colleges.... think they know the way the real working world should work, then get frustrated when they realize it doesn't, then morale problems like indifference begin to set it in, etc. etc. Luckily I've learned to identify & predict those kinds of things when I'm interviewing them. By no means is that a swipe at the schools, but they definitely breed those types.

That is absolutely true. I have [painfully] learned that lesson first-hand.

One thing they dont teach in college is office politics.
