One-lane bridges

Can somebody please explain to me why we have so many one-lane bridges in Northern Virginia? With all these $50-100 million overpasses being built all over the place they can't find the money to widen bridges by a few feet? The ones that come to mind are Hunter Mill Rd (Reston), Thomas Dr (Sterling), and Springvale Rd (Great Falls).

I've witnessed the bridges in Great Falls and Reston cause delays of nearly 10 minutes in evening rush hour as only one car at a time can pass, then wait for the lone car in the opposite direction, blah blah. Dumbest damn thing I've seen in a long time. Oh yeah, in around 1998 I pulled an old woman from her car after she plowed into the guardrail at the Reston bridge and nearly rolled her car.

thank the local history preservation jackasses. the bridges are "historical landmarks" and thus cannot be (legally) destroyed.

I compeletly agree that they need to go.

Hunter Mill used to have 2. they replaced one with a 2 lane bridge when I was in high school (the one that was right before the bike trail crossing). And the cerement and steel 1 lane bridge further up towards Barron Cameron is no historical land mark...

I remember when the bridge over South Run at Lee Chapel was replaced in (about) 1990.

Re: the other bridges. Maybe those folks are paying off the local politicos to keep the roads from being more of a cut through. Just a thought...

I believe some people in those neighborhoods want those one lane bridges to stay because they keep traffic slow.

Then use a different route.

Neighborhoods like them because they're effective traffic calming - they limit traffic speeds and restrain traffic growth.

Just because commuters want to rip through the last few remaining rural roads in FFX doesn't mean that every road should be a beltway and every square inch of the county should be tarmac or condo.

Now if we had a decent metro... or a proper teleworking strategy ...

Ha, I drive the Hunter Mill one daily and the Springvale frequently.

The HM one can't seem to decide how many cars go through with people on the other side. I'm against traffic so I see beforehand what is awaiting these twoerthreer's.

Every inconsiderate twoerthreer next gets to wait in line at the stop sign at Crowell Rd. Ironic, isn't it?

I've had people wave two fingers like they and their Honda Odyssey decided to change etiquette.

Inconsiderate Bastards/Bitches never go one at a time.

regardless of the construction material, if you burn something hot enough, it will ruin the bridge. also, drilling into the bridge in many places will weaken the bridge so you can take it out with other blunt tools. however, if you have access to C-4, go nuts. ^_^

Wasn't there a ruckus about the State wanting to pave one of the last gravel/dirt road in Fairfax County....and the residents fought tooth and nail to NOT have it paved.

They knew if it was paved, the shithead commuters would be running 90 mph by their houses every morning and afternoon.

Can't remember how it turned out.

I believe you are talking about Yates Ford Road in Clifton/Fairfax Station.

Yes, it is a cut through road used by Prince William county commuters and if I lived on that road, I would have been concerned as well. They choce to live in PW county for cheap houses, yet want good (higher paying) FFX County jobs.

It is paved, but there are HUGE Speed bumps the whole route. Good for them!

Destroying a bridge might look easy in the movies, but remember: They're designed to withstand the immense shear-forces of wind and weather. Deploying an underwater M-32 satchel charge at the base of each load-bearing pylon looks like the answer, but it might not even shake a modern riveted steel highway or railroad bridge. Without delving into the complex language of the guerrilla combat engineer, the best advice I can give you is to forgo subtlety in favor of brute force: Put two satchel charges at each X-shaped trestle buck, and this should rob the bridge of any reinforcing strength and cause it to buckle nicely.

Or you could just kick back and wait for it to fall down by itself. (See I-35W Bridge, Minneapolis, MN).

Hi Michael,
Those one lane bridges are traffic calming measures.
