Out of State Fairfax Police Officers

Why does FCPD hire MD/DC residents when all officers are required to live in the state and jurisdiction they are employed? I went to the Maryland State Police website and they clearly want you to live in Maryland if you want to become State Trooper. Is fairfax so desperate that they would hire people from Maryland and DC and sometimes as far away as in WV or even PA?

Residency requirements don't work. They've failed wherever they've been tried.

This is (still) America, I think. You can't tell people where to live.

Plus, aren't cops, teachers, firemen always crying that they can't afford to live in Fairfax County?

Why wouldn't you want a cop to live around you?

Except for the George Mason Police,

Must successfully pass an in-depth background investigation; complete a course of instruction at a police academy approved by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services; the successful completion of a mandated Field Training Program administered by the department, complete a physical, polygraph and psychological examination; and be at a satisfactory fitness level. Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent; be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen; and be able to obtain a valid operator's license. No use of illegal drugs within the past 12 months and must live within a radius of 75 miles of the Fairfax Campus.

Granted you could still live in MD or DC and be within 75 miles.

Well I had a cop living in my neighborhood when I lived over in PG years ago. He sure loved to show his badge to people in the neighborhood- for any reason. I must have seen it 5 or 6 times, for no reason. He loved to stop you on the street to talk about bullshit hypothetical crime stuff, like "Well I found out that so-and-so over there was doing such-and-such, that would be a violation of blah blah blah...". It was fucking annoying. There was also the morning when he went around the block and knocked on everybody's door to ask about some car that was parked on the street. And yes, he showed us his badge that time too. He barged into our backyard once during a picnic, said he heard some people out there and just "wanted to make sure everything was OK". I don't remember seeing his badge that time, but he did make a point to tell people he was a cop. What a big man he was! A year or so after I moved to FFX, my old roommate told me he got into some kind of trouble for accidentally discharging his weapon inside his house.

So as far as I'm concerned, unless there's some kind of emergency, they can stay the fuck out of my neighborhood.

Virginia State Police is the same as Maryland. Troopers are required to live in state because they have take home vehicles and are part of the state's emergency operations contingency.
