How horrible is the commute from Centreville to DC?

Say if I just wanted to get to Vienna Metro and not drive all the way in. How much of a nightmare will that be?

66 is pretty god awful. Best bet is to take a park and ride bus to West Falls Church.

It's going to be bad, but not as bad as if you were to drive in to DC directly. Either 66 or Lee Highway will be the main ways to get there and both of them are backed up pretty consistently.
Honestly, if you're living anywhere outside the Beltway, the commute into DC is a question of picking between equally painful alternatives.

If you can, head into the office as early as possible. I hit I-66E at about 5:30 everyday and it isn't that bad. I've gone into DC a few time on that commute as well and it is relatively smooth sailing. It sucks though.

If you need to be there at around 7, it's not bad. If you need to be there 8 or later, God help you. I've made that drive more than a few times.

Get into DC before 630AM and get out before 330PM and you're fine, you can still use 66 inside the beltway. Hours later than that, you're hosed.

Like everyone else is saying, just get on the road earlier in the morning. I take 66 to the Vienna metro from Centreville and it only takes me 15 min at like 6:00 AM. Also depends on where you are in DC, but it generally takes about an hour in the morning.

just to reinforce whats been said..if you can get up and be on the road by 6:00 am "most" mornings will be easy. Any later than that you are screwed. Also something to remember is that all parking is gone at Vienna Metro by 8:00am most mornings. I use the bust now to get to Vienna but in emergencies I would park in the reserved spots and pay the parking ticket. $20 just like parking downtown.

I have been commuting in from just outside Centreville for over 10 years now and gave up on 66 about two years ago. The faster way, for me, is to be out of the house by 0600, head straight up 29 to 50 and then straight into DC. I can be at my desk by 0645 after parking and getting breakfast to eat at my desk. If I get out by 330 or 4, I am ok. if I have to take 395 as a single, it takes an hour. if I have a slug from the office and take 66, 45 minutes. If I take 50, at least an hour.

If the OP wants to drive into DC, be on 66 by 545. That's the only way to beat the 6:30 HOV restriction. Sometimes it can take 20 minutes to get through the FFX Pkwy/50/123 nexus of hell. If you can be inside the beltway by 615, you can make it to Constitution by 630 on most mornings.
