GMU Johnson Center - help me?
Posted by: BusyMan ()
Date: December 10, 2011 03:36PM

Hey everyone. I've got a quick question regarding parking lots near GMU's Johnson Center - I realize that they all require some permit or another; however, does anyone know if this still enforce this on weekends?

Does anyone know of nearby lots that don't know? If not, what's the closest lot in terms of walking minutes?

Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Parking at Mason is enforced 24/7 every day of the year. If your going to the JC you can use the parking deck which you will have to pay for, but its much cheaper than the ticket. If your looking for free parking you will have to park off campus

If you don't go to Mason, I don't understand why you would want to study there.....

The rising tuition pays for the Johnson Center that everyone hangs out at. It's a privilege.

If you don't want to pay to park there, just park at Mcdonalds and walk across the street. Some of the parking for PAID permit holders is just about as long as that anyways.

They sell more passes than there are spots. They actually consider parking spaces at the field houses legit parking for the campus

I know it mdoesnt make much sense. However - all the public libraries close extremely early (5 pm) on weekends as well as on certain weekdays, thus it isn't always practical to utilize them.

Yes - 3/4 students are there just to socialize, but if you look enough you can find plenty of quiet spots to spend some time.

Which is fine. Either way if you dont want to pay for parking you will have to park in Fairfax City, or at University Mall. Both of which are a bit of a hike to get to the JC

some crap advice youve been getting here. ive parked many times in campus lots and have never been fined. you just have to be smart about it. that means going after hours and parking in the less used lots, like the field house lot. from there to the library is only a half a mile. and after about 8 the patriot center lots are pretty safe as well. parking enforcement is like a business. increasing efficiency means more money generated so it doesnt make sense for them to spend much time on lots with few cars on off hours.

its not crap advise. all you have to do is get one parking ticket and youll wish that you would have just paid the 6 bucks for the parking deck. And if you plan on not paying the ticket they send a collection agency after you which will ruin your credit. You may be less likely to get caught doing that but it doesnt mean you wont

I'm cool with a long walk - exercise never hurt. Opinions on the closest external lot to the JC?

Is it Uni Mall or somewhere in Ffx City?

Closest would be University mall. Hard times and such is a bit of a hike.

but it wouldn't be just 6 bucks for the parking deck. for all the times i use the library it would be many times that 6 bucks. it's an empirical matter, but if i play it safe the probability of getting a ticket times the cost of that ticket is still less than what id end up paying if i used the parking deck every time. and by the way, when i go to campus at peak hours i actually do use the parking deck because at those times the risk of using a permit lot is too great.

The 6 bucks all depends on how many times you go and how long your there. I think a parking ticket is like 80 bucks and you have to be there like 4 hours for the deck to be 6 bucks. I mean if you do go there a lot you have a point that its worth the risk and at worse you break even if it takes a while to get caught. For someone who only occasionally goes its not worth the risk though

The only place you can get away with parking without a permit is near the aquatic center back by the police station. If you park in the far corners early in the morning you'll be fine as long as its not for more than an hour or so.

During the day, just park at the mall across the street and walk over.

FYI they moved the police station to the other side of campus

Always appeal your first ticket at GMU, it'll get waived. There is one hour free parking across from Starbucks, also check and see if the meters at Finley are cheaper than the deck, I think they are.

Think twice about parking at University Mall. They tend to tow if you park and leave your car to go over to GMU. (They use spotters.) I think the Mall Mgt might be in cahoots with Henry's Towing.

Just avoid the Johnson Center. Can't get anything productive done there. Just a bunch of bullshit and people all over the place.

The area near the bank on the far side is the best since its out of sight of much of the mall.

I remember hearing 10 years ago the JC was built on a giant sink hole, is sinking and was going to be shut down within a few years. Any merit to that rumor?

Its more than functioning and doesnt appear to be sinking at all. Things dont start rolling if you put them on the floor.
