A power failure took the system down earlier this evening. It is back up again.

Hi terrysb...

Do you have any recommendations for a small (maybe hand held) scanner that can pick up FFXCO's trunking frequencies? If possible do you have have a good/better/best recommendation? I used to have a handheld scanner from Radio Shack many years ago (still have it actually) but the whole trunking thing came along and I lost track. Thanks.

Everything it digital now. See the above uniden link for the only option if you as me. The radioshack one is a big brick!

I don't have a good/better/best recommendation. However, if you are planning to monitor FFX county then you will need a top-end scanner along with some other items.
I personally prefer the Uniden scanners. The BCD996T that I have been using has been running flawlessly 24/7 for a year and a half. In addition to the scanner you will need a good antenna for reasonable coverage. Something like a Diamond Discone works really well. You will also need to get some software to program the scanner. The program that comes with the scanner is too basic to easily set up a complicated trunking system like Fairfax. I use ARC996 from Butel. Also, you will need a subscription to radiofrequency.com so that you can download the trunking frequencies .

The scanner will be taken offline briefly this evening to install the UPS and also make repairs on the machine that services the Dulles feed.
