Georgetown South in Manassas is the by far the best neighborhood to take the family to see the beautiful light displays.

There's a great neighborhood in Sterling, VA (East Juniper Avenue), and a huge mansion off of Reston Pkwy on Fieldview Dr (A very classy display I might add, well done and donwright awesome). Also, if you drive the backway towards Juniper (Via Sugarland, from Dranesville), you'll see a house on the southside corner that has great decorations. If you drive into the neighborhood further, you'll see more as well.

I think the one you are talking about off of Reston Parkway is number 21 on the web site above. It is very classy with all white lights covering every tree in the yard, including in the back.

You absolutely must go see 1601 Collingwood Road. There aren't many other displays nearby, but that doesn't matter because this house has by far the best display in Northern Virginia and is worth the drive just to see the one display. It's an impressive setup of all lights, no ugly blow-up dolls or weird signs or any such thing. Take the GW Parkway south from Old Town and make a right on Collingwood. The house will be over the rise after you go through the traffic light. You can pull off into the Manor Care on the right to view the lights.

One thing that applies any time you stop to look at lights: Pull out of traffic and TURN OFF YOUR HEADLIGHTS, especially for elaborate displays like Collingwood. It's a simple courtesy to people who might be taking pictures of the light displays. Headlights can really mess-up longer-exposure photographs.

Collingwood is nuts. Unfortunately, the line to drive up to view the house was nuts too....Close to an hour of wait (in front of some retirement home).

On the plus side, once you are done watching, you drive up Rte 1 and go to the Krispy Kreme...

Fairfax Station used to have some nice lights. You gotta go pretty deep into the development, but they are nice.

We did exactly that on Saturday night. We had taken my parents out to dinner for my father's birthday and then went to see Collingwood. Neither of them had ever had hot Krispy Kreme donuts, so we stopped in there after driving down Fairview (the street located directly across US-1 from the Krispy Kreme store) to see whether the tacky light display there was on. It wasn't, but it is set up, so maybe it was just late enough that he'd turned them off. If you're near the Krispy Kreme store and you want to see hideous Christmas lights, go down that street.

My father watching the donut machine was like a little kid watching a Zamboni.

The "retirement home" is the Manor Care place I mentioned before. I think it's some sort of physical rehab place for people who have serious surgery, based on the sign out front.

I believe I took this picture of 1601 Collingwood in 2009:

Yah, there is a place by KKs. I think it is "South Kings Highway." Very tacky.

I know the house you mean on Kings Highway. They had no lights up at all when we drove past on Saturday night. Someone told me that house is owned by the guy who owned Generous George's, but it doesn't seem garish enough for that.

The house near Krispy Kreme I'm thinking of is on Fairview Drive, which is a street located literally directly across US-1 from the Krispy Kreme store. The house is on the right as you head down the street coming from US-1. I do not remember the precise address and I do not have a photo to post, but it doesn't matter as it's very easy to find once you find the street. I believe the homeowner is named Mr. Farmer (no word on whether he'll let you watch his crops....and if you get that reference, you're showing your age).

Some great displays in South Riding. The house on Fleming Drive that has won the SR prize the past couple of years is not to be missed. Some excellent houses off Planting Fields Drive, too

As a Pats fan, I'm looking forward to the display on Sunday.

Of course, the Pats will let Sexy Rexy get a couple garbage-time TD passes, after the score has reached 48-3.

MIght that be Fred Farmer? His wife is/was a FCPS bus driver, and he had a son that was a pretty good football player. If it is, he is a good guy. Didn't know him well but remember him from his kid at West Po football.

By the way the "KK" is from Krispy Kreme donuts that I like so much. Only eat them on the rare occasion because if I ate them as much as I'd like to I'd weight 250!

Take 28 south make left onto Compton rd. Go about a mile and you will see the house on the left. Make a left into the neighborhood and there is a sign in front of the house telling you what radio station to tune to.

There is a neighborhood on Lewinsville Road in McLean, between the 123/Dolly Madison intersection and Art Nauman Drive, where the residents line the streets on Christmas Eve with lit candles hidden in bags--it creates a really beautiful and peaceful ambiance in the neighborhood. I used to love to drive through there on Christmas Eve and just experience this. Nothing gaudy or garish, but it is so different from the usual plastic and Walmart front lawn tinseltown displays that it might be an alternative for those who might prefer a more quiet and simple beauty.

Anybody know the story here?

Looks like no lights on the Kings Highway house this year.

Take Fairfax Station Road To the end at Colchester Road and turn left. Take first right back onto Fairfax Station Road (by the Bunnyman Bridge). Take first Right (don/t remember name of street). Light display on left.

That's a great picture of the house on South Kings Highway! Unfortunately it's dark this year, for the first time in my memory, and I've lived in the area for 20-plus years.

Does anyone know what happened?

We drove by South Kings last night and were shocked. First time in at least 15 years that it is dark.

Crevena Oaks in Burke. Something about the green and red lights glimmering off rusty refrigerators and the missing shingles on roofs under the moonlight.
