You know, those silly fools that say things like "America, love it or leave it" are so off base in their thinking, because the very underpinning of America is one that allows for, and asks for, dissent and voices of opposition. I've grown up in the area and I plan on moving in the next few years. Like "Took our jobs" said....nice federal gig, get promoted a few times, and look elsewhere!

This place really is a fucking dump. People are mostly arrogant assholes, the women are stuck up spoiled princesses, traffic sucks a big one, and now it's become a "who can build the ugliest new condos," contest between construction companies. To the OP I am well ahead of you buddy! Leaving end of March after spending way too long here. I bitch about this area but whether I like it or not it's still home for me. When I leave I also miss it a lot more than when I am here, but we'll keep it that way. Fairfax is better to visit again than live.

Lived in FFX/Alexandria from 1961 to 2010. The decline in the area I grew up in (Hybla Valley) is shocking. In the 60's and 70's, while we lived in a modest housing development a couple of miles from Route 1, people cared for their yards and maintained thier houses.
The old neighborhood is now a hispanic ghetto. I feel sorry for former neighbors, who are now elderly and can't move.
Alexandria City is no better, the uber liberal city government allowed the AHRA to construct a low-income black ghetto near our old house off King Street and guess what? Property values start to decline, glad we got out before the rot really set in.
In Alexandria, although hispanics rule north Del Ray off Mt. Vernon Avenue, you never see them get on the AHRA gravy train - that's a black cottage industry!
Bottom line, as others have said, it's better to visit than live in NOVA, it five years FFX will effectively be the northernmost province of Mexico.

For what it is worth?... Heard (haven't verified) that Missouri has a very low population of immigrants compared to other states. State and local municipalities require a command of the English language with motor vehicle testing etc. Less traffic, too. But, the job situation is nothing compared to NoVa. No place is going to be perfect unless you are wealthy and can build your own 'hood.' Think that others have tried that path in the past in Germany, Serbia-Croatia etc. Our family likes the diversity of the NoVa area. It's never boring.
