Sadly there is truth to this statement. They sell us on Metro based on the idea that it will make our commutes quicker. Then they use Metro as an excuse for allowing intensive development nearby, thus making parking at Metro impossible. Anyone else remember when parking was fairly easy to find near the Orange line stops in Arlington?
Recommend being at vienna nlt 7:30 am, you might get a spot at 7:45. If you park handicapped parking, those go even earlier. Snow days you should arrive much earlier, as they seem to not clear all the spaces or end up piling snow in much needed parking spaces.

After leaving at 5:30 am....

Correct. I arrive at 7am, bang out 9 hours, leave at 4 and I'm back chipping and putting with a stogey and a Lagavulin in the backyard by 5:30pm. I also work from home 3 days per pay period and have every other Friday off.
I once tried the whole vienna metro mistake when i was commuting to Rosslyn.
From door to door, It took me longer to get work via metro then it did to drive by about 5min. Considering the rush hour fare was about $4 each way, it didn't save much money either. Sure i had to pay a little extra for parking at my buidling but it wasn't much more a month then metro parking.
I supose if vienna metro didn't have seperate traffic jam getting in and out AND had better parking it might have been quicker and more cost effective.
Look into taking the bus to the metro from wherever you live...It is only $1.50 each time instead of $4.50. That way you don't even have to look for a spot!
Avoid NON-LIGHT car garages because, there could be criminals lurking in the dark without you aware of it. DO NOT BECOME A VICTIM OF Mugging. NOT FUN. TERRIFYING.
Parking after 7:30 is only by luck. If you're constantly missing out there is a commercial lot across from Dunn Loring. Busing it to Vienna is another way to go, or spring for a reserved space @ $65. Good luck.
I currently get to Vienna around 6:45 but three years ago I had later commute and got there between 8:00 and 8:30 and never had a problem at the south garage. I could usually park on the 2nd or 3rd floors. I considered it a bad day when I had to park on the roof. I doubt it has changed that much in 3 years.
What do you think about the Great Greater Washington Crowd that wants to get rid of metro parking lots and put in "Transit Oriented Development". Ever go on that blog? Nothing but Anti-car, anti- suburbs, anti- real world.
Try looking around for free residential parking nearby if you can. I don't what exactly is available around the Vienna station, but many stations do have lots of residential parking within a short distance, such as Dunn Loring and West Falls Church. Whenever I have to take metro, I park in a safe residential spot on the street, and it's usually only about a 5 min. walk to the train platform. Beats paying for parking, stressing while circling in the lot trying to find a space, wondering if your car will get broken into during the day/night, and the walk is enjoyable in good weather. If it's pouring or snowing or 105 degrees then you can park at the metro.
