Seriously, this subject comes up on here so much that it has become a topic that is made fun of... you should have no trouble searching for it, it's been the subject of numerous threads over the years.

Someone needs to add those threads to the wiki for easy reference...

I've used LA Tint on 4 cars/trucks in the last 8 years. They did a very
good job and I always recommended them.

Unfortunately, they did a piss poor job on my new car.(mis-aligned tint,
permanant water stains all over my seats/deck/door panels that cost me
a bundle to replace) I don't recognize anybody in the shop anymore...
not sure if they changed ownership or hired all new(cheaper?) employees...

I'm not going back there anymore...

My comments above *only* apply to the LA Tint stores in Sterling and
Woodbridge(next to Potomac Mills Mall), since those were the only two
I've used.

I dont know if tinting your windows is worth it in the conservative state of Virgina...I've heard of people gettin harassed by the cops for having the LEGAL percentage done.... ESPECIALLY if you live in Fairfax County, you will get fucked with by the cops, GUARANTEED! But if you really want to do it, LA Tint in Manassas does EXCELLENT work!

According to http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/VA/, just make sure that your front sides let in at least 50% light, and the rear sides and rear window let in at least 35%. That appears to be the minimum in VA. FYI, it's best to leave yourself a little room for error (read: if you're right on the minimum, and your windows are really dirty, they COULD still nail you, although it'd probably get thrown out in court if they did).

The tinting rule is there for safety reasons ...

...and if your window tint is checked, make sure the officer follows the instructions on how to use their equipment:

I had my tint check today...

Driving tonight with my family, I pulled onto a road where I looked over my shoulder and ther was a marked cruiser shaddowing my blind spot.

A check of my speed, showed no worries however, the cruiser puller behind me and lit me up.

The officer asked how long I had my windows tinted - I replied with the answer (of a LONG time)...

I was asked if I did the work - I said no, I paid to have it done. He then asked me to roll down the windows (back) which I did then the front one up a bit. I did.

He slid a tint meter over the roll down (without any visible validation or site calibration).

It showed something like 28% light transmission.

He said I was to have no less than 50% transmission and my glass was illegal.

No, I said. I have a waiver. It showed on my registration, he disagreed, saying I needed a copy of the waiver. I stated that was not the case in the past 12-14 years...

From the DMV Web site:
The vehicle owner will receive a new registration card with "sunshading" printed in the Special Conditions space. This registration card serves as verification that the vehicle is authorized to have sunshading.

So he then said, ok, 35 (percent) is not 28%. I said there is an allowed variance and he again disagreed.

I found this on the tint meter site quoted in the FFU Wiki page:
NOTE: Be sure glass area to be measured is free of dirt, debris, and moisture.

I am sure that my rain soaked vehicle that I have not washed since the salt/snow was all over it would not have reduced transmission, right?

Anyways, a few minutes later, I was back on my way, no problem. But why the bother?

I appreciate the professionalism offered however, the stop was not warranted, as a roadway run of the tag would have come back with sunshading on the record for the vehicle, don't ask me how I know...

Here is the manual for the meter: [www.laser-labs.com]

FYI-If you need auto window tint in the near future Contour Tinting is offering a grand opening special at their new location, 4280A Henninger Ct. Chantilly VA (opening March 5, 2008). They have been around for a few years as a mobile tinter and have done good work for me in the past. They use only top grade film (lifetime film and lifetime color warranty) so they do not offer a teaser price and then try to upgrade and rob you when you show up to take advantage of their specials. For the month of March 2008 you can have up to a 4-door car tinted for $189.00 and all other pricing is very reasonable. They are taking appointments now at 703-967-0384. This is a short-lived special so I thought it is worth posting. Also the date on this message should be February 22, 2008 but it keeps coming up incorrectly.

Great, another tint shop destined to be out of business in 3 months. Anyone looking to sublet a warehouse in Chantilly? Available June 2008.
