The classifieds are getting THIN in most areas...

While reading the Sunday edition of the Washington Post (I read it for the classifieds, and for a glimpse at what the libs are thinking...), I noticed how thin the classifieds have gotten - especially in the automotive section!

I have bought many cars from the Post classifieds, but with selection way down, there is not much to see there anymore. What used to be 12-16 pages, was down to about a 1/2 dozen today. Pathetic.

In other news, official notices (foreclosed real estate) listings were WAY up in numbers from what I have ever noticed.

Anyways, just an observation. Maybe the internet has taken most of the car sales ads away, maybe it is the times we live in that fewer are selling. Let's hope it is not the later, as VA tax base depends upn the car industry, both new and used, for sales tax revenues.

Classifieds are a huge waste of money. Glad they are going away.

Why are they a waste?

Some are required (like the official notices) while others are cheap and somewhat efficient ways of getting something sold - or in my case, to buy.

Why are you so glad?

The Post did an article on this subject last summer.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/30/AR2007083002046.html?hpid=sec-tech

It's no longer as profitable for newspapers to run classifieds, there's too much competition with online advertising sources.

Why pay for a classified ad when you can post on craigslist for free?

I agree. I also think ebay will self destruct soon. The listing fees are getting ridiculous and when you add the fees that PayPal charges, you're fucked.
