New to the board so forgive if a repeat...looking for good non-chain restaurants in Fairfax and appreciate your recommendations. A bit of a food snob but open minded! :-)

Villa Mozart is very good, especially for a special occasion, but the service has been inconsistent over my four visits. The rack of lamb was outstanding and they do a nice job with pasta and offer a good variety of options. The prix fixe menu, available Monday-Thursday is a good way to try the restaurant and the options are still pretty good.

If you are looking for something that can be a 'go to' place on a more regular basis I still stand behind Artie's (even though this suggestion is sure to stir up a lot of negative comments). Some people may consider Great American Restaurants (GAR) a "chain", but it is probably closer to a restaurant group like Lettuce Entertain You, which owns places like Big Bowl and Mon Ami Gabi, on a more local level.

Artie's service is top notch, has a great bar, and offers a nice menu variety with well prepared seafood and beef. Although Ray's The Steaks is the best steak restaurant around, Artie's is still my favorite place for a rib eye in the area,

It's not a restaurant, but you'll never be disappointed with a cream soda and any sandwich from Bernie's.

This may sound like a joke, but I'm serious.

The Blue Iguana

My wife's a foodie (ugh) and she raves about this place. I went there once and liked it despite not being a foodie.

Despite the name, it is not some TexMex place with a margarita machine.

Havabite Eatery. Its a small family owned place, not at all expensive. Try their pizzas, and hummus. Great combo of food, ambiance, and style in old town right on Main St

For fast food Mexican, I was surprised by the Qdoba in Fairfax City, where Walgreens/TJ Maxx/Starbucks on Main St/Old Lee Hwy is. Kick ass tacos, burritos, and quesidillas. A little more than Baja and Chipotle, but not by much, and a whole lot better.

Coyote Grille and Cantina is the best by far.

Blue Iguana is not in Fairfax City. It's in Fair Lakes and it Sucks!

To each their own, but no "foodie" is going to be into Blue Iguana. It's run of the mill and perfectly fine, but absolutely nothing anyone is ever going to say is special and especially not a recommendation from a "foodie". If you appreciate quality food, you will not be impressed. Maybe full and satisfied, but not blown away. Lame. Managers of restaurants writing on this page as if patrons.

Agreed. We've had a few luncheons there for a group. From a convenience standpoint, they do OK. They have menus set up and grouped around certain price points. They also provide a semi-dedicated waiter if you have a large enough group - 12 or so or greater. I've never left there disappointed. However, I've also never left there with something very memorable about the place. Certainly, it's not something that I'd suggest to my wife as a place we should have dinner at. There's too many other choices that I'd rank higher than this for the dinner we have out every 2 months or so.

Qdoba is awfully like Chipotle. For that kind of "convenience" Mexican food, I'd suggest Cafe Rio. There's a location that just opened in Manassas and there is one soon to open on Rt. 7 by the Target in Arlington. Granted, these are not Fairfax locations, but if you're traveling by those areas, their food is even fresher than Qdoba, Baja Fresh and Chipotle. They seem to have a very organized kitchen crew and on person is dedicated to making fresh tortillas for the burritos, tacos and taco salads. Plus, the have some of the best Chile Con Queso I've ever tasted - and, my daughter agrees, too.

I'm not affiliated with Cafe Rio in any way, but just impressed with what I've experienced for a quick lunch. Also, for those who are hot sauce fanatics, don't overlook California Tortilla. The have a wall of hot sauce bottles (at least 50) that you can pick from to "heat" up your meal a bit. Plus, the sell some of the sauces by the bottle in their store, too.

Also, has anyone tried the Vespucci's restaurant, yet? They seem to be more of an Italian seafood restaurant and are located next to the Kia dealership, just across the street from Brown's Mazda on Rt. 29. I don't seem to see too many people eating there - then again, the parking in that area is a bit crazy and may not hold many cars, requiring patrons to park half a block away on the residential street.

Yes (Pierro's Corner), it is good, the pizza is very good. They also have good happy hour deals on food and drinks at the bar, just be warned the bartender is an idiot.

Hard Times sucks, they still let people smoke in there, it's disgusting and the food isn't too good either.

Vespucci's isnt very good but it wasnt terrible, there are much better options if you want Italian. Pierros Corner, Dolce Vita, etc.

Beers are over priced for happy hour and the chili is overrated. Its not bad but its nothing special and no where near as good as Bens Chili Bowl

This is true. Also, Red Hot and Blue makes up some crucial BBQ.

RH&B buys most of there meat prepackaged from Aldi in Manassas, it's not very authentic at all. It's pre-shredded.

We have been over this a couple times before.... You are 100% wrong about that; completely incorrect. RH&B Smokes and prepares all of its meat in house in their smokers, hence the reason there is a plethora of delicious BBQ smoke smell by the courthouse and pink hue in the meats from the fusion of smoke and tissue.

some of the restaurants listed above are within the City Limits of FFX. Others are on the other side which would be considered, FFX County. LOL.

I've been to all of them. It's good to have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from.

RH&B is about as good as a chain place gets for BBQ like a Famous Daves. The fact is that it can just never be compared to a place that only smokes their meat to cook it as there are some great roadside BBQ places within about 25 minutes of fairfax city.
