mail theft in Burke

My mail was stolen from my home in Burke, anyone else have their mail stolen?
I called the cops and they gave me a number for the postal inspector's office.
I have no idea what mail the thieves got, I was told they might be after IRS forms. I guess they will be out looking for our checks from Mr.Bush next month.

From the manual:

6.2 Postal Law Violations

Instructions on mail security as it relates to unauthorized opening, inspection, tampering, or delay of mail are in Administrative Support Manual 274. Information and complaints on a possible postal law violation must be sent to the appropriate address according to the ZIP Code ranges shown below:

ZIP Codes

Address

08001-08004, 08007, 08009-08049, 08051-08086, 08088-08091, 08093-08099, 081-084, 08505, 08511, 08515, 08518, 08554, 08562, 08640-08641, 150-39776, 700-799

Postal Inspection Service

225 N Humphreys Blvd

Memphis TN 38120‑2149

Not from the manual

Remember postal crime is a Federal crime and therefore it involves a Federal prison if convicted. While Federal prisons tend to be a bit nicer then say, the Jessup prison, they are undesirable because there is no parole in the Federal prison system. !0 year sentence means 10 years.

You are only half right, well, OK you are 85% right. While there is no parole, there is time off for good behavior. Most federal prisoners can be released after serving 85% of their time. A ten year sentence is really an 8.5 year sentence. Please do some research before posting inaccurate information.

Ok let us get technical. You are barely 80% correct. It is called "good time" and is a maximum sentence reduction of 54 days per year. My math says that is a reduction of approximately 14.79452054% of the sentence at best!

I did this research...

Maybe they were after those pre-approved credit card offers that most people get almost every week. Or the balance transfer checks that come with your statement....those damned things should be illegal.

Well I know for a fact that cards with store gift cards are often stolen. It happened to us. Cards just ripped open in search of a gift card from Blockbuster or Macy's or anywhere. You can just feel the envelope inside to see if there is a gift card inside. Also packages left on porches are easily targeted by theives.

This is why I have all my mail delivered to a post office box. Get one now, to minimize any future damage. Sign up for a credit monitoring service. You can also get (1) free credit report each year from each of the (3) credit bureaus. Space them out and you can get one every 4 months https://www.annualcreditreport.com

if you are going to be technical, do it right!

there are only 360 days in a prison year as there are 30 days in a prison month.
so 54 days of that is a reduction of exactly 15%, just like he said. they keep it simple so that you end up with whole days.

however!... a normal 10 year sentence will really take 3600 days instead of 3652 days (leap years included). so really you would get out 540 days before the already shorter 3600 days. so it would be a total of 3160 days, 592 days shorter than 10 actual years.

so really, it's a total reduction of 16.2102957284% from an actual 10 years.

Thank you for the info... I will certainly keep this in mind should I ever go to Federal prison. Perhaps this should be re-posted in the "are you a criminal" thread. Might pertinent information!

I would suggest subscribing to an ID theft service. Mail theft is one of the easiest ways to get to someone's ID. If there are credit card applications in there or IRS forms, you could have some issues down the road.

If you suspect your mail was stolen go to any of the big three credit reporting agencies. You can fill out online a 90 day freeze on credit offers. The only way they can approve any credit in your name is to call your home. This effects all types of credit extensions even cell phone contracts and such. Its free and only takes a couple of minutes.

So much for mail being safer than the Internet.
