All these shootings.

WTF is up with all these shootings. Six people died in Missouri when a gunman goes crazy, and 5 others died in L.A yesterday and dont forget the six that got killed in chicago. Are people getting crazier or what.

Oh well, back to work.

Don't worry about it. In Fairfax, you are more likely to be stabbed to death according to statistics. Time for the government to implement some serious knife control measures. We should outlaw all knives with pistol grips, all knives with serrated edges, and all knives with a folding blade. I don't care that our founding father's found knives useful for all sorts of things besides killing humans, they need to be banned.

I agree because a man with a knife 100 feet away is very dangerous and you have no time to react or no hope of defending yourself against the knife that is 100 feet away. And yes, the bigger the knife, the more the danger, from 100 feet away.

And yes, once you get hit with the knife, it is merely a second or two later that the same knife can be used to cause peril to some other innocent bystander!

Sorry, my mistake, I didn't realize that all stabbings and attempted stabbings were telegraphed and perpetrated at a range of 100 ft. I also didn't realize that once a knife was used in a stabbing it couldn't be used to stab someone else in a brawl or mele. Silly me. I guess all the stabbing victims in Fairfax County must be really slow and stupid to allow themselves to get stabbed like that. Thanks for your insightful sarcasm.

How much does the NRA pay you say such things on the internet?

A knife is very dangerous at 10 feet or less, but less dangerous at 100 feet. And If I saw a brawl or "mêlée" involving knives, I would probably leave. A mêlée involving guns, I would leave but would still be in exponentially greater danger.

And if you are driving in Springfield would you rather have the guy brandish a knife or a gun after you cut him off?

Now correct me if I am wrong but yesterday I heard somebody refer to a broken bottle as a "Nigger Knife"
5 years ago iN fairfax you were more likely to get a machete attack then gun.

Again, my apologies, I was unaware that people posting opinions on this site were required to be renumerated by special interest groups of similar opinions. Am I to assume then, that you are paid by the Brady Campaign?

A weapon of any kind is dangerous in the hands of criminals. Your comparison is fairly meaningless because if someone wants me dead, they are probably willing to come within 10 feet of me. As I mentioned earlier, more people in Fairfax are stabbed than shot. That being the case, how can there not be a rational basis to ban knives if you want to ban guns?

Neither, but I would be able to flee the situation in either or be able to defend myself in either.

Its amazing how worms like you creep out of your holes when there's talk of gun control and then barf about everything else under the sun (knives in this instance) EXCLUDING gun control.

As per your pro-gun logic anyone can fuckin rip through your car door with a fuckin knife and stab a low life like you. But a gun with a fuckin bullet? Naah. Fuckin Naah, that just cant happen.

Bastad, I think it will take some mad citizen (which are in abundance in this country as proved time and again) to shoot some near or dear one of yours before you start harping on guns instead of knives.

Thank you for your opinion. And, as a matter of fact, someone near and dear to me has been a victim of violence. She was stabbed; nearly to death. She was saved when she was able to reach in her purse and shoot the assailant. She underwent numerous surgeries, was on life support and could not regain a speaking voice for 13 months. To this day, she has the scars on her body to remind her of that horrific event in her life. If not for the firearm, I might be laying flowers on her grave in a few months instead of going to visit her to welcome her third child. The only low lives I see are those who would be willing to take away the only means of self defense to 5"3" 109 lbs women who may fall subject to vicious assailants intent on raping and killing their victims. But I suppose her right to live beyond the tender age of 19 is subordinate to your thirst to deny law abiding citizens their constitutional right to own a legal product.

For those of you who do believe in the Bible, In revelations it says passages about the mark of the beast in the right hand or the forehead. In any event we can see the state of the world is slowly grooming us to a point where we may not be able to refuse the mark in order to buy sell or trade. PRAY YE!

First, her "constitutional right" is in question now, and the Supreme Court will be hearing the case. Don't you read the papers?

Second, you didn't mention; did she know the asailant? In most cases as described above, the answer is usually "intimately." Women don't usually put themselves that close to strangers in an isolated place.

Don't bring emotion into the equation, there are many stories of drive bys that hit the wrong person, road rage that resulted in gunfire killing children, and spousal abuse with a handy gun on the other side. Now go back to Newsmax.com, and let the Supreme Court do it's job and effectively rule to make the NRA, and their wacky logic, just go away.

I really don't understand how the Missouri shooting could have possibly happened... guns aren't allowed in city council meetings in Missouri. I thought when they banned guns in places it meant that shootings can't happen there? WTF?!

Just for the record, almost ALL confrontations involving guns happen at around 10 feet (aside from the comparatively rare, but highly publicized mass-attacks, and even those to some extent).

And while some have used banning of knives as a "reduction to the absurd," it's only absurd here, as long as we haven't gotten that far. In Australia they banned swords, because people were running around hacking each other to bits, in the presence of mass gun control.

And, the best part, in the UK last year, an MP was calling vociferously for a ban on kitchen knives longer than 6" or 8" (can't quite remember which). Goodness knows no chef needs a knife longer than that. Anyone who says they do is just trying to overcompensate...

The point being that people will find ways of hurting other people, even en masse, if they are disturbed or criminally minded enough. Generally available protection of the highest quality is the only defense.

Yah, its interesting the Constitution talks about "arms", not guns.

So if the state is really the controller of the militia, it should take away all guns, knives, bows/arrows, slingshots, swords, hammers, chainsaws, clubs, baseball bats, crowbars, etc.

They're all arms and all of them have been used to kill.

Remember the wonderful kid out in Middleburg that killed his goth girlfriend's dad with a sword?

I certainly read the papers. Thank you for asking. Perhaps you need a tutorial on how our legal system works. First, the case has yet to be reviewed by the Supreme Court, let alone decided. In case you are too slow to understand what that means, it means that until that time comes, it is her constitutional right. Second, the Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the appellants. In case you are too slow to understand what that means, it means that until that decision is overruled, it is her constitutional right. In case you missed it, we live in a pretty litigious society and governments and individuals and other groups are perpetually engaged in litigation involving many of our constitutional rights including the right to free speech, the right against unreasonable search and siezure, and the right of habeus corpus to name a few. By your logic, ALL Constitutional rights are in question. Perhaps, sir, it is you who need to read the papers a bit more.

It isn't relevant whether or not she knew her assailant. But, because you asked, she did not know her assailant. She was walking home from her summer job in a fairly suburban neighborhood and was attacked by being grabbed from behind.

> Don't bring emotion into the equation, there are

When you bring up roadrage killing children, innocent victims and the like, are these not emotional? Is this not bringing emotion into the argument? While this is tragic, this only shows that guns should be kept out of the hands of criminals.

Please don't patronize me with your Newsmax comments. Intelligent people can disagree on this issue. I am no sheep and certainly no shill. Your arrogance is only overshadowed by your lack of intelligent debate on the issue.

LOL. I was more than expecting this kind of response.

And yes, all other things being equal, would you rather defend yourself against a person with a knife or with a gun. And after the person is done stabbing you, he can remove the knife safely in a matter of a second and then go after someone someone else who did not run away.

If you follow the history of "Gun control" The Supreme Court hasn't in over 70 years ruled on gun control issues. Why? Because the last time they did they put restrictions on types of guns, the altering of guns, and gun ownership. It is this reason the NRA has since never challenged gun control laws to the Supreme Court-they know they will lose. They are shaking in their boots now that the current court will hear a gun control case. In an interesting footnote, every retired Supreme Court Justice in recent memory has said the second Amendment does not guarantee a "right" to own guns.

At this point, we can say the "right" is fuzzy at best, and the right may not exist by the end of the year.

Thank goodness her assailent didn't take the gun from her weak body and fired it at her.

Do you remember when the NRA was toting their members were "responsible gun owners," and a gun stolen from the NRA museum in DC was used in an armed robbery and shooting? Do you remember the captain of the Olympic shooting team (then sponsored by the NRA) got drunk at a party and shot himself dead?

Simple. Don't cut him off, as either way he's got a 2 ton automobile to kill you with. And as these poor souls found out, road rage-ers will follow you and stab you just the same: http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&tab=wn&ned=us&q=%22road+rage%22+stabbed&btnG=Search
(Wow! There are a lot of road rage stabbings! Who would have thought?)

A better question: If you lived in Springfield and some MS-13 members break into your home in the middle of the night, would you rather have a gun or a knife? Becuase they will probably have both.

I would rather have a phone to call the police. They are trained to handle such situations. If I had a gun there would definately be a gunfight. destroying my house and endangering my children.

better to 'destroy' the house and endanger the children than be dead with your children

Even, Sen. Obama says the right to bear arms is an INDIVIDUAL RIGHT. Must be that wacky logic that FUNdamental was talking about. Go ahead, Radiophile, write to the good Senator and ask him how much the NRA is paying him to make such ludicrous statements.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Barack Obama said Friday that the country must do "whatever it takes" to eradicate gun violence following a campus shooting in his home state, but he believes in an individual's right to bear arms.

Obama said he spoke to Northern Illinois University's president Friday morning by phone and offered whatever help his Senate office could provide in the investigation and improving campus security. The Democratic presidential candidate spoke about the Illinois shooting to reporters while campaigning in neighboring Wisconsin.

The senator, a former constitutional law instructor, said some scholars argue the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees gun ownerships only to militias, but he believes it grants individual gun rights.

"I think there is an individual right to bear arms, but it's subject to commonsense regulation" like background checks, he said during a news conference.

For all those wondering what would happen if you lived in a country with very tight gun restrictions, please read the first sentence of this article to yourself two or three times until it sinks in.

See unless a gun has a bayonet on it, which is unlikeley for a handgun, one can use ones hands to push the gun barrel away from one's body. Whereas if one tried to push a knife away, one would cut oneself in the process.

And, of course, only if your name is Barack Obama. That's the way it always is with these politicians. It's an individual right for *them*, not the unwashed masses.

But then again, who needs a CHL or a gun when you always travel with 50 armed Secret Service officers?

And you suppose that if a man is crazy enough to attack you with a knife he's going to obey a law that keeps him from using a gun on you instead?

Take your chances, then. Post it on youtube. I'll bring popcorn.

really now... lets ban guns so that all the law abiding citizens wont have a way to defend themselves.. which is, by the way, a right you have according to the constitution.. you know the one that says you have a right to bear arms. Meanwhile when guns are banned and the law abiding citizens cant have guns anymore. The criminals who dont care whether guns are banned or not (much like crack and heoin) will still have them will be twice as brazen with them because they now KNOW that the helpless unarmed citizen wont have one... GOOD LUCK

Here's a few links you may want to take a look at to expand your view of the gun control issue. I thought these were pretty compelling.

While I am appalled by all the recent shootings, and one in particular hits home, I still stand for gun carry rights.

I like to compare gun control to drunk driving control. For example, driving drunk is illegal and shooting someone is illegal. Driving a car, OR drinking is NOT illegal. Having a gun, OR being crazy is not illegal. Soooo if we ban guns... should we ban driving a car??? should we ban drinking in general? Look at how many people die in a year due to driving accidents, especially when alcohol is involved.

As already stated.. GUNS ALSO SAVE LIVES!!! As a 23 year old petite female, I might not have the strength to fight an attacker, and I'm not relying on any cell phone or police or bystander for assistance.

Too many people don't have all the facts. There are too many people in this world that only understand that a gun can kill, and media sure doesn't help. I will admit, I was one of these uneducated, afraid of guns, citizens. To these people, I simply suggest visiting your local NRA or VCDL group (by the way, there is a great VCDL group in fairfax area,) and educate yourself on the real numbers. Remember... these are people who LEGALLY CARRY WEAPONS... generally not your crazy people. Obviously making things illegal in the country doesn't work well.. maybe what we should do is educate instead.

I like my changes of having a gun to shoot back; than to be restricted by some administrative rule- to using a bic.

Ferfux, I know you're immature and won't directly answer my question, but I'd like to know how the students in Utah are "dangerous". The "armed" part was apparent from the story but the "dangerous" aspect eluded me. Or is it just your irrational opinion of the story?
