Is 55k enough for a single person to live on in Fairfax?
Posted by: $Poll ()

Moving to Fairfax. No kids, single, no car payment and 15k in student loans. Is 55K yearly salary enough for rent and to live on?

Yes as long as your good with your money and dont try and get a place you know you cant afford. The area is expensive but since youre single it shouldnt be an issue

Yes. I won't repeat what yes() said above me, but if you're single and can't get by on 55k, you're doing something wrong.

Best bet would be to find a group house and share the expenses.

A decent start with today's economy. Your loans aren't too crazy either.

With no other payments, $55K won't be a problem in an apartment. You'll spend more on the apartment than you want (at least $1200), but don't skimp on it. Live somewhere not ghetto. You'll be happy every day you come home.

Cross Oakton, Vienna, Fairfax City, Great Falls, and Mclean off your list. Now focus on Chantilly, Centreville, or for shits and giggles Rt 1, or Baileys. That pretty much is your area, and find an apartment, high up if possible, to avoid bullets, or any other type of vandalism, crime such as b+e etc.

You can do it, its not going to be easy, but it is feasible in these areas. Not in the ones listed to avoid.

live with roommates you can even live near metro for less than 600 if you want to

keep the college vibe going as long as you can and sure beats the hell out of paying 1500+ plus for a place you basically only sleep at.

You'll be fine. As others have said, you can have one roommate and still live in a decent place on that. Try to live solo in Arlington though, and you won't make it.

I make 42k- and live with my parents. The cheapest apartments my way are $1100-for a studio! 1 bedrooms are 1400 and so on- even the cheap section 8 place is still 1k/month!!!

I said forget that!!! I would be giving up over 55% of my net (I take home about 2200/mo after health insurance/401k) just to have a place to sleep! It would be cheaper for me to check into the motel 6 for a month! LOL. Plus with the traffic, I have to leave at 6:30 and most nights dont return until 7 (coming from the merrifield area where the traffic is HELLACIOUS coming down 29/50/66!) -why am I gonna pay 1200 for something I am only in maybe 8 hours a day?

My advice- since you make too much for a tax-credit community- get a roommate. Seriously. You won't make it any other way unless you are ok with living down route 1- although I may be moving there myself because my parents are driving me crazy!!!! I'm about to pay for my freedom again!!!

Brought to you by....

At 55k a year, your take home pay a month is probably around $3,200. I would target $800 or less for rent if you plan to commute to work. $900/m if you dont have a car and and need to be within walking distance on the Orange line.

Get. A. Roommate. .. you will be able to afford a place that is not a cockroach infested mess.

Definitely.. My husband and I make a combined 100k and live in a really quiet and nicely updated apartment complex in Centreville. Granted, we have more debt than you combined, but we still make it. You'll have no problem.

This. If you are like most young singles in the area, you will want to drink a the Clarendon bars for obvious reasons. If you are a half-way normal human being and can stand some noise on the weekends, split a single family house with a group you can find on Craigslist. I have friends that pay like 500 utilities included to split a small 2 bedroom basement, 2 more upstairs. 2 guys 2 chicks, similar interests and put together they throw one hell of a party.

Sure is. I've survived on less than that a few years ago with a one bedroom apartment and decent car. But that's with no debt.

Look at renting a room instead of an apartment. Somewhat of a pain yes but shitloads cheaper.

I live on 25k alone in a $1100/month studio apartment in fairfax in a nice area (Fair Oaks). After all the essentials (rent, bills, food, gas, taco bell for lunch every day) you may only have $200-$300 in spending money each month, but it's not a bad life.

Centreville and Chantilly are the Manassas version of Fairfax County, but they are the affordable area, if that is possible.(At least for here).

Hang out in Herndon. The chicas who clean hotels during the day will think you are rock star rich and are easy lays for a wealthy gringo! Plus they'll put out in hopes of getting a green card and will even bring their cleaning supplies over to clean up your place.

Or you can just screw Dina Ahmad...
