Louie's Rock City
Posted by: Arthur Warren ()
Date: November 18, 2011 05:40PM

In the day, there was no better place to go and hear good, loud, live rock-n-roll.

Louie's was located at Bailey's X Roads in what I believe was a former grocery store. There was an admission fee, the drinks were expensive but served by hawt cocktail waitresses dressed in short skirts and fish net stockings. But, man, the music. On occasion, a former great but now washed out act would perform. To this day I remember going and hearing Leslie West of Mountain fame. Loudest damn music I'd ever heard, but damn was it good.

This was in the early 1970s if I recall correctly.

Seriously, nobody remembers Louie's? Sick.

How about Steven Windsor at Landmark, the only place to get colored neck ring t shirts? You do realize that Landmark was an open area mall? And it actually a safe place to go?

I do. It was a Safeway before it was Louies. Back in the day when you could be 18 to drink and even if you were under 18 the cops didnt seem to care.
I would hate to be 18-21 today and live under such suckass alcohol restrictions.
They had great live bands and equally great fights.

There was another place just down the road on Columbia Pike in a small strip shopping center. They also had live bands but I cannot remember the name of the bar. Much smaller than Louies. There was a military recruiting center next door if that jars anyones memory.

The name of the place on Columbia Pike was Bad Habits, but before that there was a small family owned Italian restaurant. Me and my friends used to go there on Fridays for dinner when we were stationed at Arlington Hall Station.

Much thanks. A small venue but great sound. I feel sorry for anyone in their twenties today. The small amount of places that offer a live band totally screw you over on drink prices and cover charge. I think we paid a five dollar cover and beer was a buck. Great local talent and no one had to be searched for weapons before coming in. I dont even recall being asked for an ID. Although bikers were asked to remove their colors.

Turns out there were some pretty good bands that played there. I've decided to write a book on the place. Fond memories I have of the place. If anyone has any pics or stories to tell, PM them to me. Rock on.

I remember Louie's Rock City. I grew up around the corner.

Before it was Louie's Rock City, it was a place called Royal Hawaiian Super Club. Never understood, even as a kid, what a Hawaiian Super Club was be it was really nice on the outside. I remember the big Tiki's outside and they seemed to have people there that sounded familiar because my parents watched them on t.v., like Phyllis Diller. Always wanted to look inside but was too scared to try and go in.

After Royal Hawaiian, it was called "The Place that Louie Dwells." Again, as a kid, I didn't know who Louie was or why he dwelt in a place like that. It then became Louie's Rock City.

It might have been a great place at night, but during the day it was an eyesore and looked like a dump. I was 13 in '78 and one day my girlfriend and I were walking by the place and this roadie was sitting outside, drunk and he exposed himself to my girlfriend. We ran home told our parents and they called the cops. The arrested the guy. Not sure what happened to him, but we stayed clear of the place for a while.

The only band I can remember playing there was "The Roadducks."

Thanks for remembering Bad Habits, I remember the place but couldn't remember the name.
What about Misty's at Culmore and Olivers in Fairfax and Eskimos Nells in Arlington?
The twenty-something's today don't know about going out listening to live music and partying. They spend their time on facebook, twitter and on their x-box and PS2

Since I lived in Springfield the next stop was obvious. The Jack in the Box in Annandale. You could only stomach their food if you were totally drunk. I rarely saw people eat there in the daytime.

Ran across your page when I was trying to check my memory about Louie's Rock City. The Place Where Louie Dwells and Louie's Rock City, though owned by the same man, Mike Munley, were not the same place. The Place Where Louie Dwells waslocated originally at 1000 4th Street, SW in DC and later moved to 1011 Wesley Place, SW. I had fun at both places, and had friends who competed in the Battle of the Bands at Rock City.

Regardless if there was another "The Place Where Louie Dwells" located in DC, Louie's Rock City started out as "The Place Where Louie Dwells."

Maybe you never visited it when it was called this, but it did start out with that name.

OK, I'll play! I remember my bro's band being involved in one of those Battle of the Bands deals at LRC...they did OK and actually won a round that was determined by a guy on stage holding a decibel meter. The band with the following that made the most noise won. And I remeber going to use the restroom (this was about 1980?) and swarms of complete strangers would offer you all manner of controlled dangerous substances that were in use there...unbelievable!

Louie's Rock City - the place of No. Virginia - we all remember... my twin worked there, she was one of the Hawt (hot) waitress' working there with all of her crazy girlfriends'... Pat Benatar, AC DC (I was there that night) - oh, my god.... loud, very loud, great music, wild times, omg ... very few people are aware of this amazing place. People would walk in the door, go thru the red drapes, go to the Bar/Restaurant, and everyone would want to see who would pop in next; if it wasn't a beautiful woman, or a hot guy (from body builders' to well known news people, or it was a known king pin drug dealer, or it was the girls night out ... and the list goes on... my twin said the tips were incredible; yep at that time the door fee was as much as $10 or higher depending upon the band... I am pretty sure Hall and Oats were there... great times... my twins name was Rachel - but her real name was Sara Matacia... amazing you wrote about this huge place...do you remember the shooting? MY sis worked that night - I heard about it in the news and thought she could've have killed - but nope... thanks for the memories; and not forgetting ... Louie's Rock City... the PLACE

My twin and I were from the Oakton area, and we moved over to Arlington, but she ended up with Bob Cohen of Springfield, who was in battle of the bands, a drummer, after wrecking his vette, he later worked his day job at CSX, as a Railroad engineer ... Bob and his house became the fame of Sprinfield. Bob Cohen just died recently, right after Christmas - he was from Springfield, and we all enjoyed that disgusting Taco Bell in Annandale, after Louie's... my twin Sara, and Bob Cohen had a son, Danny. Sara, too, dated guys from Louie's Rock City; My beau at the time, wouldn't let me go there when he was around... I guess I frightened him into thinking I'd have a good time... I did...ginette et all

Nice to see all of this. Louie's was my grandfather, Mike Munley's restaurant. He actually opened the doors at "the Bayou" back in the late 50's and after getting squeezed out got "The Place Where Louie Dwells" up and running in SE WDC. So when Louie's in DC closed it reopened in Bailey's XRoads as "The Place Where Louie Dwells". Later shortened to "Louies Rock City" because of the shift in music. Pretty amazing that a 70 year old man was making this music happen for teens and early twenty year olds in Northern Va. Yes...it was amazing and I never saw anything better anywhere or like it since. Great memories for so many and happy to see it's never to be forgotten by many! Here's to all of you who made it what it was back in the late 70's!! Cheers!!

Jack in the Box was open 24 hours and specialized in serving the bar drunks after 2am. If you went by there in the daytime there was hardly anyone in the place. Their tacos made Tippys seem like gourmet food.

I remember it well. Me and a friend of mine were in the parking lot and had just finished smoking some pot. A cop then knocked on the window and opened the door. He started screaming where is it? He then proceeded to search the car. Finally he gave up and told us to go home. Did that switched cars and came back and saw a great show by Tacoma. Cop should have pulled down the window visor. Good times!

Here's where Louie went:

Hammerjacks, Baltimore's shrine to big hair, loud dresses and heavy metal, is plotting a comeback.

An Anne Arundel County man has bought the trademark to sell Hammerjacks-related merchandise. And, he said he's negotiating with developers for a new branded club near the planned Baltimore slots casino off Russell Street.

His plans are the second time a revival of the iconic megaclub has been attempted since it closed in 1997; a 2000 reincarnation failed to win over the original's legions of fans, which included, over the years, the likes of Bret Michaels and the classy lady pictured above.

evin Butler, a 47-year-old mortgage executive from Anne Arundel County, was a regular at the Howard Street location of Hammerjacks; the club originally opened in 1977 on South Charles Street, but it was the club under an Interstate 395 overpass that became iconic.

Over two decades, it hosted some of the most popular acts in live entertainment: Donna Summer, the Ramones, Guns 'n' Roses, Ozzy.

In 1997, the Maryland Stadium Authority paid the owners, the Principio family, $3.1 million for three tracts of land to make way for parking near Camden Yards.

The demolitions of Hammerjacks, and sister clubs Louie Louies and Gridlock, drew scores of people looking to walk away with bricks and other mementos from a club that some called legendary.

"It was the Studio 54 of rock 'n' roll," Butler said.

A new Hammerjacks opened on Guilford Avenue in 2000. But while it booked major acts - Baltimore club DJs Rod Lee and K-Swift; Tupac, Queen Latifah - it never regained the popularity of the Howard Street club and closed in 2006. Bourbon Street, which recently closed, took over in 2008.

Butler started looking for Hammerjacks merchandise several years ago and couldn't find anything besides vintage. It seems that when the club closed in 2006, the owners of the trademark neglected to renew it.

Much like the new owner of the National Premium trademark, Butler believed the Hammerjacks brand still had equity in the market and he secured it in 2009 for $1,000, he said. His attorney, Lawrence E. Laubscher, is listed on the trademark.

"For people between the ages of 35 and 55, it's a place everybody has a story about," Butler said.

The trademark gives him ownership of the Hammerjacks logo - which consists of the name underneath a hammer and two lightning bolts above the letter 'j' - and its use on clothing and the promotion of concerts or nightclubs.

For now, he's used it to sell clothes, coolies and other knick knacks on his website, Hammerjacksonline.com. He said he's sold thousands of items.

His more ambitious goal is to open a brand new club and concert hall, either for him or someone else to run, near the planned slots parlor in Baltimore. He claims he's negotiating with developers and investors - he declined to say who - but has not secured a partner so far.

I worked at Louie's for many years as the soundman. I had the time of my life working there. Mike Munley was a former Trombonist for Tommy Dorsey as I remember it, but in deference to another post, we called him "Flat-Top."

He was one of a kind. No other club owner I have ever worked for cared so much about the end product as opposed to the bottom line. His Philosophy that you had to be open 7 nights was hard on us as a crew, but soon it became the life for Fran, T-Bird, Dorrie, Jack, Andy, Nerville, David, Mark, and all the rest of the people who worked the stage with me. Sadly, I have lost touch with all but T-Bird and he still works in the business touring with a national act. Fran passed away a couple years ago as did Jack. Other than that I don't know but would love to find out.

What I do know is it was our mission to bring you the best technically produced shows at that time. Our collective hope is that some of you followed in our footsteps and chose live event production as a career.

So far as the "Waitrons" as they were known internally are concerned, there was never a finer bunch of waitresses and bartenders ever. We had Playboy Models working there. If they weren't stunning on the outside, they sure as hell were on the inside. They each were accomplished Ballet dancers and proved it as they traveled through hundreds of people with trays full of beer and very rarely spilled a one, ALWAYS remembering who ordered what.

Aside from Flat top, I would be remiss If I didn't mention Donald Munley who did an outstanding job finding the best in entertainment as well as Marshall who ran the bar and kept track by hand of all the beer, wine and food that was sold in a day and age where computers were non-existent.

And over in the corner was a guy slicing Roast Beef. Real Roast Beef not some pressed meat imitation. He sat there patiently awaiting his next customer and never complained. He went home with a headache one night and never awoke. Miss you brother.

Keep posting! I know a lot people played there and I remember quite a few, but it would be great to find out how your lives have turned out.

Ah, the memory is rusted!

For those of you coming in the front door and getting your ticket from an old movie theater style ticket machine, the person who sold you that ticket and took your money was Vickie.

She went on to have a stellar career as an Americana guitar player/songwriter and opened for Jethro Tull on some 25 dates!

What a training ground Louie's was.

For those of you that are Roaduck fans, it is with deep regreat and sorrow that I inform you of the passing of Bob (the Bopper) Gainer last night at 6:45. He was a one-of-a-kind performer and a great friend. A Wake will be held at Empire - formerly Jaxx - in Springfield on June 5th which is a Thursday night. I have no time slot info yet, but will post it as soon as I am informed.

The Roaducks played at Louie's many times and it was during these performances that a lasting friendship between myself and The Roaduck members began and continues to this day. I spoke with members of DC Star and Molly Hatchet today and we shared memories of Bob and his likeable wit.

I know thet will be taosting a few long-necks in his honor as he told us so many times - "I like my Budweiser Beer!." I have had that hit tune running through my brain ever since I heard of his passing.

Rock on Bopper!

Haha I got an old Electric Factory/Ticketron ticket that looks just like that somewhere, Songkick says it was 5-1-81
http://www.songkick.com/artists/71283-rainbow/gigography?page=33

I need to dig thru my shit...

I can't believe Blackmore played there just a few months before coming back and playing with Travers. I thought LRC was closed by then, I was in 9th grade LOL.

$8 tickets, those were the days, always cracks me up to look back and see the old Crap Centre tickets that were $6.75 and like a dollar fifty more for the good seats..

How was the show?

Ah, the Rainbow Show....

Ritchie had insisted that the hallway lights in the backstage be turned off. As I came out of the tech room to go up to the stage at the start of the show, I ended up standing on Ritchie's feet. Everytime I moved, he moved and I ended up back on his feet. I finally threw myrself on the floor to get off them.

The next thing I saw was Ritchie heading out onstage where he rubbed the heads of all the people up next to the stage and put on one of his finest performances. I believe Ronnie was not there that night, but my memory is rusted like I said earlier.

I do remember the roadie giving him the wrong guitar on the song he smashed the guitar on that night and instead of busting up a junker, he smashed one of his prized guitars. I understood that the roadie in question got his airplane ticket home tha night...

What a great show.

It was a fun place to go.

A place like that might actually thrive today if drunk driving wasn't so vilified.

I never left Louie's with less than a 2.6 bal. I was lucky I was so good looking because I never drove away from there drunk. Always some hog or bitch with cankles took me home and date raped me because they knew they could never score a stud like me unless he was stupid drunk which I was.

And hey- girls all look prettier at closing time anyway.

The city of Fairfax closed them down. They kept having police called, too many noise violations, fights and drama for the city.
Really though. It was a great place to work. I loved Johnny Winter.. and Root boy slim. I still have the back stage pass signed by Chuck Berry.
The waitresses where great.
The manager (Marshal) was big loud and totally intimidating. I do wonder what ever happened to him.

As Greggwar already has stated here, I was there when the mighty Judas Priest played 2 shows back to back, and there was almost a riot because many people got turned away, from both shows. Late 70's or early 80's, as I recall. I remember an insane show and the boys were on fire (as they were on the verge of calling it quits at the time). Hot waitresses, drugs galore, many of these being done on the table tops left over from the old Polynesian restaurant that was there prior to Louie's. Great place that dripped of an atmosphere that included bikers, babes, yuppies, stoners and everything in between. God was that a fun place! I had many great times there and my best friend ended up meeting and marrying a girl he met there. Fuck, that killed that friendship...

No, the "BOYZ" were local to this area. Jeff Watson was the singer, Brett Reece was the guitar player, Steve Angel on bass, and Joe Hasselvander on drums.

I had just joined the FCPD, early 1981. We used to respond down there in force when the bouncers, who used to kick the hell out of drunk idiots causing trouble, would call us for assistance with fights. This usually happened during the Battle of the Bands!

We had some knock down, drag outs every once in a while! But, for the most part we would do our "bar checks" and watch and listen to the bands! Problem was, our portable radios didn't work in there so your stuff was thin if a melee broke out!

Great memories

Re: Louie's Rock City THE ACTUAL FACTS
Posted by: Keith John ()
Date: July 29, 2016 08:04PM

Louie's Rock City was named by Keith John of All Of The Above. The club was previously named The Hawaiian Supper Club, The Place Where Louis Dwells II. The club was owned by Mike Munley one of the original owners of The Bayou, a famous nightclub many years previously located in Georgetown, Washington DC. The Place Where Louis Dwells II was failing financially and was about to close the doors When the management and booking agent of ALL OF THE ABOVE discovered the room.

When Keith John, drummer, went to look at the room he said "this place is huge but it's named wrong, it shouldn't be called the Hawaiian Supper Club or The Place Where Louie Dwells, this place is as big as a city. Let's change the name to LOUIE'S ROCK CITY."

And so the name was changed. Mike Munley informed us that he had approximately two weeks before he would be shut down due to back taxes owed the IRS.

A business deal was arranged between Mike Munley and ALL OF THE ABOVE. The business deal was ALL OF THE ABOVE was to work for "the door." Mike Munley would work for the bar receipts, liquor and food.

Immediately Jerry Piper, bass guitar, Paul Lofthus, management and Keith John, drummer, handed out 3000 flyers in the surrounding neighborhood.

ALL OF THE ABOVE was installed as the house band. The plan was to use the club as a showcase to "break ALL OF THE ABOVE as an international act."

The band personnel at this time consisted of:

Bill Graves, guitar and lead vocals
Jerry Piper, bass and lead vocals
Dick Dysinger, keyboards and lead vocals
Bobby Blankenburg, guitar and lead vocals
Keith John, drums and lead vocals

Dave Paseur (Pretzel), Electronics engineering and lighting director
Debby Dunn, assistant lighting director

ALL OF THE ABOVE was the only band that played at Louies for the first 45 days. The first night there were 13 people in attendance in the audience. The second night 28 people, third night 60 people, fourth nite 72 people. On the weekend it got up to 600 and 800 people. The capacity of the club was 1200 people.

ALL OF THE ABOVE took all of their income from the door proceeds, and bought three weeks worth of radio ads on the three biggest stations playing their original music during the voiceover advertising the club.

Almost immediately the club was filled to capacity 1200 people per night. ALL OF THE ABOVE began earning $10,000 a night at the door.

The club was an immediate overwhelming success. So much so that Fairfax County police were very upset because they now had a venue where people were causing problems in the parking lot and they were getting a lot of calls.

Mike Munley was thrilled because the club was making so much money in such a short time, he was able to pay the IRS and keep the doors to the club open.

The management team of ALL OF THE ABOVE decided to bring in the first national group into the club in order to help draw more people and showcase ALL OF THE ABOVE in an attempt to get them a national record deal.

The first group to come in was called EXILE. They had just released a record called "Kiss You All Over." The plan was ALL OF THE ABOVE would open and EXILE would headline. EXILE was booked for two weeks.

Every night Louies Rock City was now packed to capacity.

During this time, "Kiss You Over" went to number one. Fairfax police were constantly called to the club for problems both inside and outside in the parking lot.

The police decided they were going to shut down Louies. There had never been this much action or excitement at any nightclub in Fairfax County. The police first attempt to close the club was - they found a law on the books in Fairfax County that said "NO dancing on Sundays."

Because people were dancing on Sunday, the police closed the club.

A few nights later, the police closed the club because the lead singer for EXILE sang with no shirt on. The police stated there was a law in Fairfax County that said no one could have exposed nipples on stage.

The following night when the club opened again the lead singer for EXILE wore a set of strippers "pasties" to circumvent this supposed "law."

Every night as ALL OF THE ABOVE and EXILE played to capacity crowds, the police looked for every excuse to close this new disturbance that had opened in Fairfax County called "LOUIES ROCK CITY!!!"

But the word was out, this was THE place to be in Fairfax County. And it continued to be a tremendous success for a long time.

ALL OF THE ABOVE took the first $500,000 that they made from the door proceeds and bought a building at 16th and Columbia Rd., Northwest Washington DC, which was up for sale.

It was the site of the original Mormon Temple.

The Mormons were selling this building and moving into the giant structure that is well-known now out on the beltway.

ALL OF THE ABOVE and their management team purchased this building with the intention of installing the largest recording studio in the Eastern Hemisphere of the Globe inside the building.

Architectural plans were drawn up, equipment was moved in, and everything was underway.

The attorney for ALL OF THE ABOVE sold the building, without permission from the band, to a controversial person named Rev. Sun Yung Moon.

This sale made the front page of both main newspapers in town, The Evening Star and The Washington Post.

The attorney and the manager of ALL OF THE ABOVE absconded and with all of the proceeds from the sale of the building.

Needless to say, this caused tremendous strife within the band and they never recovered.

Louies Rock City continued without their founding members for approximately two years and eventually went bankrupt.

Louie's was a great place to go in 77, disco hadn't really started invading the suburbs (thank God) and if you wanted to drink, dance and party late night this was the spot. A hard rockin huge club that was almost always packed. Many Thanks to All of The Above, back in the day you couldn't drive the beltway without seein their spray paint tags everywhere.A great bunch of guys. I remember parking my Harley on the sidewalk most nights and almost always findin a girl on the seat wantin to go for a ride....hmm. The waitress were defiantly smokin hot even one girl named Harley, they put up with alot of crap up to a point and then Billy or one of the monster bouncers took em outside. The Munley brothers were very cool and Pop always sat on his stool keepin an eye on his money. Gotta mention Kim Turner from James and Turner production that kept the bands rollin through. I lived right around the corner from the place and it was way easier to go over to Louie's then to head downtown to the clubs. A lot of memories were made there for sure. I met a blonde there on July 14th 1977, ended up marry her and we are still together and have nothin but fond memories of people we met and time spent partyin at Louie's. Thanks to all who made it happen.
