High School Redistricting II

Okay, I noticed some posters from the high school redistricting thread mentioned they received fatal errors when sending their posts so I decided to create a new thread to continue the high school redistricting. Carry on, folks.

No new middle school in souther Fairfax County. Use the empty seats at Lake Braddock and Hayfield.

Thanks for continuing this.

One issue that keeps coming up is the following:

> 'Reston Kids' to Reston High school, South Lakes.

By this logic, where would folks send all the other communities in the county pyramid system?

McLean residents to McLean High School? What, exactly, is McLean? What is Westfield's "town" from which it would draw its students? Shouldn't Floris go to Herndon because so many residents there shop at the Clock Tower Plaza? Or would its homeowner association residents have to build, say, a "Monroe Manor" elementary school because the system should be established via HOAs? What is Oakton's "town" or HOA? What about Crossfield? Part of that considers itself "Oak Hill" -- which is really a Herndon zip -- but it goes to Oakton. Many there shop at Franklin Farm shopping center or Fox Mill or Hunters Woods or the Clock Tower or Metrotech. Another section of Crossfield goes to South Lakes, and shops at Hunters Woods or South Lakes or Fox Mill shopping centers. It is divided quite evidently by West Ox Road. And Fox Mill? Those high school kids all hang out at Five Guys or Starbucks in Fox Mill shopping center, three miles from South Lakes.

What, exactly defines "Oakton" or "Vienna" or "Sully" or "McLean" or "Great Falls" or "Langely" or "Chantilly" ?? It would be hard to draw a map based on these notions of "town."

In the end, it can be argued, communities are far more united by local road connections -- ease of transportation -- than by HOAs or zip codes.

This county school system is not based on HOAs or incorporated towns. We have a very loose sense of "place" here. Our school system is based on a county-wide system and the community in question is Fairfax County.

I posit that, often, the high school defines the community, and not the other way around. At least for families with school-age kids. For example, the folks in "Madison Island" are bracketed to the north by a community that goes to Forest Edge, then Hughes and SL. To the south by a community that goes to Sunrise Valley, Hughes, and SL. Those families have become immersed in the "South Lakes pyramid" community, so to speak. Once the "island" section of the Madison pyramid changes pyramids, those families will begin to make new ties -- and probably keep the old ones, as we often do. (Remember your college buddies that you still see once in awhile?) Their community will soon become the "South Lakes pyramid" community. The transition will take some work, but a positive attitude, the knowledge that kids really are resilient, and maybe even a sense of adventure should help enormously.

I really believe that if we embrace this concept of a county-wide "place," it strengthens our entire county, its economic system, and our overall sense of community and satisfaction with it.

I have a different observation. From my experience, it seems to me that communities are defined by the youth league sports programs and local church preferences. For example, where I grew up (corner of Vale Rd and Hunter Mill Rd) we lived in Oakton HS territory; however, all of us participated in Vienna Youth Inc, programs and attended churches in Vienna. That being the case, we played with and prayed with children who attended Madison HS - and they overwhelmingly outnumbered us future Cougars.

Oakton HS to us as children was a mysterious place, but Madison HS was well known to all of us. Eventually that neighborhood was redistricted to Madison, by the way.

This is a good idea but might be hard to accomplish. I went to sunrise valley and remember lots of kids from fox mill from when I was little and was honestly suprised when i got to middle school and realized that they werent going to be at the same school, also aldrin and armstrong kids. But apparently lots of fox mill parents insist that their children are not on the reston sports teams and do not associate with kids from reston. so i dont know what to think.

That is an excellent idea and I have no doubt that most parents being redistricted will send their children to private schools or homeschool. But not everyone can afford to do that. You might want to consider those less fortunate than you.

FYI, Vienna is a town and everyone in the town goes to Madison. Ditto Herndon. Everyone in the town of Herndon goes to Herndon high.

>>>I really believe that if we embrace this concept

Could you explain how that works? If I never leave Vienna to shop, how would that hurt or help those in Mount Vernon or Reston? If Reston people only shop in Reston, how does that hurt Vienna? Do I need to shop at Springfield mall rather than Tyson's to help the county? Help it to do what exactly?

Please don't encourage people to come to Vienna to shop. Our roads and stores are crowded enough now.

Thanks!

We had hundreds of empty seats in high schools when the built South County high school. why should their new middle school be any different? People always approve school bonds by a wide margin. NO problem building new schools we don't need.

Do you actually condone wasting $80 million on an unneeded building?

Somebody missed Neen's sarcasm ....

I think the point was that the lemming, kneejerk "More money for schools!" crowd here in NoVA ALWAYS vote in favor of the enormous bonds that come up year after year, with no evidence whatsoever that the county is using the extra funds wisely. In fact, there is plenty of evidence that the SB is spending the money hand over fist on extremely wasteful, poorly planned projects and huge administrator salaries.

If the next bond brought up for a vote in this county actually fails, then this redistricting mess will have been worth it. But somehow I don't see that happening.

The school that really isn't needed is Coppermine. Who is going to go there?

This will cost $25 million. A complete waste by Tistadt and his cronies

Reston isn't a town officially but it's just a much a town in spirit as Herndon or Vienna. I had this discussion off and on for years - hey when you hear people bragging about the nice homes at lower prices with Reston [or Herndon] conveniences and amenities but not going to Herndon or South Lakes, it resonates. The in your face attitude is unbelievable. One developemnt in Reston HOA [Wyndham Hills] had an access road to 7 planned to secure the Langley pyramid then closed it. Via google someody was quoted as being down the street from a school feedoing to Langley. The street was route 7 in all it's glory. Another developemnt might have had a barricade [Berlin Wall Effect]up to not have through street access to Hunter Mill to avoid South Lakes.

Some idiot sent some kind of a virus file to page 194 of the high school redistricting thread 1 so I jumped to this thread. I was attempting to respond to Mike's post about the boarddocs that was posted for the 02/11/2008 work session. It mentioned about the student exodus and the AP vs IB programs. Nothing new about FCPS playing down arguments about people against the redistricting. I honestly do not think that if the redistricting goes through, it will not achieve the goals very well for the SL community what they are seeking for.

Yes, I said everyone in the town of Vienna goes to Madison. I don't know how to make that more clear.

I don't think Joe actually infected my computer but he sent the virus crap in a block form causing anybody from the high school redistricting thread not be able to post anything from the RD thread. I know because I have tried to post so I jumped to this thread. I think he removed his posts quickly before any more high school redistricting people decided to redistrict him somewhere else. He also posted saying "why were there so many damn threads about the redistricting" so I asked him to better leave these people alone.
