1st HOV violation = 2 points??
Posted by: DC GUy ()

I am a DC resident with a DC licence and received a ticket for my first HOV offense in May. The VA cop told me there would be no points so I just paid it. Today I looked at my driving record and DC gave me 2 points for it!!! I called the VA DMV and they told me that they just send the ticket to DC and DC adds whatever points it feels like. DC DMV gave me conflicting answers. Has anyone else received 2 points in DC for an HOV first offense ticket? I can't find anywhere that it says DC will do this. I'm so mad!

Agreed, tough shit. Enjoy the points, it is one point per person you were supposed to have in your car.

I know how to read signs so I don't get HOV tickets.

You must regularly get caught violating traffic laws to care so much about a mere 2 points.

Tough luck dummy.

Thanks for all the friendly response - not sure what you are so angry about - I didn't KNOW it was HOV because I just moved here and the signage wasn't clear - I've never heard of an ENTIRE HIGHWAY being HOV (it was getting off of 66). I think it only exists in VA.

Can anyone actually help me and let me know if they've also received the points in DC?

Each State and DC have their own "point" systems. I believe the way it works is that if/when DC receives word that one of their drivers has had a violation, they then assess the number of points that that particular offense carries in DC. So, if a HOV violation carries 2 points in DC, that's what you get. In Virginia, the point system assesses 3, 4, or 6 points. No 2 pointers in VA.

Are there HOV lanes in DC? If not, I don't know how they handle a violation for which there is no comparable offense in DC???

The signs are pretty clear. Don't blame anyone but yourself.

2 points for an HOV violation is insane, but chalk that up to DC which is probably looking tack on some surcharge to your next ticket in the district because you have too many points. What's even more lame is DC doesn't assess any points for a photo radar ticket, but does for an HOV violation in another state? Uh, which one is (in theory) more dangerous?

DC stinks and is just about fleecing its residents and any hapless commuters from VA & MD who happen to drive 5 mph over some bogus limit. You want to complain, go to the DC DMV and give it a shot. After 14 hrs standing in line you might get a meeting with one of the fine DMV employees who I'm sure is really looking to help you.

Do yourself a favor, move out of that dump.

Try to stop texting and read the 12 highway signs you passed telling you the road is HOV and the hours to stay off it

I assume you have broken various other DC laws because they are special to DC?

Wow - this thread shows how ignorant and hateful some of you VA people are. I'm very glad I live in DC with tolerant and educated people. Sorry you can't afford to live in a nice part of DC or go to an Ivy League school but stop being so bitter! I never said anything unkind about VA but this thread has made me think people in VA are uneducated, low income, republican hicks....why do you spew such hate? Your traffic laws stick and so do you!

Sadly, you are right. The responses you got are ridiculous. It is sad people see a need to do that.

This is a strange place for you to ask your question. Most people on this board are not DC residents and know nothing about their laws. It seems like you just wanted to vent.

There are similar HOV highways in other states. I haven't paid much attention to the signs coming out of DC since I know the road is HOV restricted at certain times. I am guessing they are pretty clear, but maybe not.

It is unfortunate the officer gave you bad info. However- did that change what you would have done? Would you have taken a day off of work to go fight the ticket?

The signs are very clear about when HOV is and theres even some places you can get off if you realize you made a mistake. The Officer didnt give him bad info. He gave him the correct info for the state of VA. What DC decides to do with the ticket when they learn about it is up to them not the officer.

You forgot arresting you or expired tags. DC is the ONLY place in the entire US that does this. Also they give out more tickets a year than they have residents.

What surprises me is that the OP did'nt contact Channel 9 or 7 over this injustice. They usually love to run stories from whiney commuters that disagree with traffic laws.
