Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
At this point it's not likely to change anyone's vote, but does anyone know why Sharon Bulova and Janet Oleszek dumped Megan McLaughlin? Huge 4x8 signs planted in the Braddock District over the weekend show Sharon's support for Janet, but Megan is not mentioned at all. Quite different than the earlier mailers and road signs.
Something happened in the past couple of weeks. Even Catherine Lorenze, after two years of promoting Megan for school board gave her a weak last minute endorsement.
QUOTE
Megan McLaughlin: Reformer. Megan still has children in FCPS which is a huge benefit. She is a proven leader and a former college admissions officer. Her bi-
partisan approach is a welcome change.
Nell Hurley: Reformer. Nell has encyclopedic knowledge of FCPS issues and has volunteered in the schools for years.
So I've kind of made a bad happen this election cycle of not focusing my energy on more races than just John Cook, but his is the most important in Fairfax. But running alongside Cook is Nell Hurley, a longtime community activist and Republican leader. I've been to her house a couple of times for various events she's hosted. But beyond that, Nell's been a leader in Braddock district, and specifically on school issues.
Democrat candidate and Oleszek ticket-mate Megan McLaughlin has been an interesting candidate. What has become apparent is all of her civic activism has been towards a political run, not necessarily for just doing good. Her loyalties are also somewhat nebulous, just as her positions. She's running as having been president of FAIRGRADE, but her own consultant Catherine Lorenze has been touting Republican-backed Louise Epstein as the true leader of FAIRGRADE, and that Megan essentially came in after all the work was done. On the other hand, it was Nell Hurley at the Woodson PTSO who wrote the resolution on the honors policy that the school board took and made their own. This goes to the theme of this race . . . someone who's done things in the community versus someone who's doing just enough to put it up as bullet points on a campaign mailer. It's just like John Cook vs. Janet Oleszek.
Then there is McLaughlin's other claim to fame . . . her leadership in RENEW. Yet the founding members of that group - Ellen Oppenheim and Bob Greidling - who are both Democratic activists in Braddock, are supporting Nell! So Megan again brags about something she did just for her resume, yet the founders who are activists in her party are endorsing Nell Hurley, a proven community leader.
It speaks volumes. Its just further proof of the deep divide in Braddock district this year. John Cook and Nell Hurley, proven community leaders. Janet Oleszek and Megan McLaughlin? Political trimmers looking simply to hold elected office just because. I think us voters here in Braddock know what team is ready to lead this community forward.
Nell Hurley is the Real Deal plagerized

Seems I saw this before. Probably on the November 3 posting to the Mason Conservative.
Not a big fan of Cook's personally, but he has done a fairly good job reaching out to the entire Braddock District. Sadly that cannot be said for EITHER of the Braddock School Board District candidates. Both like to tout credentials that might make them credible candidates for the at large seats. Otherwise it is as if both think they are running as candidates for Woodson rather than as candidates for Braddock District.
With Megan having supporters like that, Nell should have no problem winning. No idea who wrote it but I do recall seeing it somewhere before. Perhaps an earlier topic on this forum.
Anyone looking for a reason NOT to vote for one of these candidates would not have a hard time finding one. Hurley seems to live with her foot in her mouth, and if you want to have some fun try comparing some of her recent comments to her comments a couple of years ago. McLauglin has aligned herself with some debatable causes and has questionable political ties. It would be nice to have a reason to vote FOR someone.
So all you political experts who thought Megan wasn't going to win, did any of you see the absolute beatdown Megan handed that old hag Hurley on Tuesday? Nell didn't win ONE single precinct. Not one, there are 26 of them and Nell couldn't even win one. And do you know why? It's because everyone in fairfax county knows Megan is a true leader, and that Nell didn't even hold a candle to Megan in terms of leadership. Megan is a great choice for school board, and anyone who disagrees is either stupid or has his or her head too far up their own ass to make a logically decision on the matter or school board candidates. Does 60-40 ring a bell? Go Megan!

No it's not. She won because nobody bothered to vote in this election.

Plus her Dem endorsement. Otherwise she'd have ended up like the Repub reformers, at home. Except for Schultz.
Wrong thread? What's the name of the thread you idiot? Second off, how can you give limp-dick excuses like "it's because no one came out to vote" and "It's because of her endorsement" ? She had the largest margin of victory in the entire school board race. If anything, had more people voted, the margin would have beeneven greater. Face it, you guys know jack-shit about politics, and you all just sound downright ignorant because you have no idea whatsoever what you are talking about. Hurley was a PTO president, whoop-dee fricken doo. How can she be more qualified? Also you need to get your facts straight, Louise Epstein and Catherine Lorene are very much still in favor of Megan, in fact Megan is at a campaign thank you party for Louise right now. So please for all of us here in FFX County stop posting absolute trash that isn't even backed up by facts.
Megan Supporter, I think it was the Hurley v. McLaughlin post (or something like that) that had all of the "Hurley's going to win" posts, but I'm not going to try to track it down. You can look it up yourself if you want. And before you start throwing out the "With Megan having supporters like that, Nell should have no problem winning" line in my prior post, please note that it was a SARCASTIC response to a negative blog comment supposedly made by one of McLaughlin's supporters. The rest of those comments you attribute to me aren't mine.

Rants like these are why Ben Tribbet called Megan 'the next Liz Bradsher'

Megan is articulate, young, bright, energetic, and beautiful. Strauss is a lethargic, tired, lifeless, ugly old hag. Megan will eat her lunch."
Well, I see Catherine isn't over the election results just yet. She is still steeped in the "Anger" stage of the five-stage process of grieving after a loss. The five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Sweetie, its over, Janie won. At least move on to bargaining, please.
I worked a poll all day with Megan- I was helping to re-elect the Sheriff-and I tell you what,Fairfax County is lucky to have her! Can't tell you how many citizens stopped her and actually ASKED her about real issues. She took the time for each and every one of them. She realizes who is the real boss- the citizens of Fairfax. She will make you proud Fairfax.
