School Text Books: Return to bound paper text books?

This thread is for parents and students to comment about the FCPS trend to eliminate standard paper text books in favor of online only publications which provide minimal savings. I believe we need to return to paper text books. Chris DeCarlo, parent. Please comment.

I think it makes sense to move to online textbooks. We may not be ready now, but before too long the kids will be so used to reading on iPads, smart phones, etc. that it makes sense to start moving in this direction. A plus is that the texts can be updated constantly and I assume there can be links included to take kids to more information that would be available in a book. I also assume they are cheaper in the long run. We need to be sure kids who can’t afford the equipment or the technology has access or can get hard copies. I’m sure there are other concerns but overall, this makes sense to me.

I'm all for online books - the current online "book" for Civics in my daughter's class isn't JUST a text but also allows annotation, highlighting, hyperlinks, the whole nine yards - plus it is right there with all the OTHER online information and search capabilities.

Her (middle school) principal recently mentioned that Kindles, etc would "soon" be allowed in school.

This actually IS progress, IMHO.

Online publications are the right idea in this time.
