Most beautiful places in NoVa

Since most posts here seem to bitch about the area, I would like to throw out some of the truly breath-taking places in NoVa. Here are some of mine:
1. Great Falls Park..anywhere in the park, it's just amazing.
2. Burke lake on a crisp morning- the fog hovering over the placid lake is amazing.
3. Hemlock Overlook in Clifton- this place and "downtown" Clifton give you the very real feeling that you have gone back in time.

Fall in and around the mountains. The Greenbriar resort is fun but stuffy. I know you can rent a cabin but I have yet to find any that are 5 star.

Driving to the local wineries are fun. Go out 66 and you can find some great local ones. Do a tour with friends on a bus. Cheaper and safer.

North Fork of the Shenandoah, spring, canoe, fly rod, smallmouth sipping flies on the surface. Stop in and see Harry Murray in Edinburg, have some coffee, buy some fresh condoms for that secret compartment in your wallet, find out where "The boys" are catching them. Fucking priceless.

Bull-run occoquan trail. Go east from Hemlock (Left). Pretty stream views. Great for running or hiking.

As a kid in the 60's I remember gigging shad in Pohick Creek. Today it is a cesspool.

Cross-county trail for biking has some very nice sections. Four Mile Run trail does too - if you take the older route through the trees.

Wouldn't describe it as "breathtaking", but Pohick Bay is a nice place for kayaking. You can paddle your way through the maze of swamps and see beavers, osprey, eagles, etc. During the summer when the moon is full they offer night tours. Very cool being out on the water in the dark as the full moon rises.

I like all of those places, but I would never call any of them "amazing." There are much more "amazing" places in this country.

The views from the GW Parkway are amazing. Problem is that you risk your life if you take your eyes off the road for even a second.

There are still a few unspoiled places in the county known as Fairfax... here's but a few:

1. Giles Run Park. Features the areas largest and most challenging disc golf course, which winds through 53 acres of unspoiled land on the property of the former Lorton Reformatory. The park features mountain biking and hiking trails, and lots of neat old buildings throughout the area, as well as a pretty little fishing pond, and some ball fields as well. The facility does lack in basics like bathrooms and water fountains, so be prepared if you plan on spending time there.

2. Mason Neck Nature Preserve. Huge area on the Occaquan and Potomac Rivers. Tons of paths and nature to enjoy. Not much in facilities, but if you're a nature lover, it's a great place to go.

3. Riverbend Park. Located upstream from the Great Falls Park, Riverbend is much less crowded. It features canoe rentals, a nature center, as well as a nice pavillion with a sundeck. Lots of paths, including one that leads to Great Falls Park.

4. Theodore Roosevelt Memorial. Located off the GW parkway, this tiny island is a great place to take kids and to escape the DC crowds.

5. Braddock Road, Centreville. One of the few remaining stretches of the infamous "Braddock's Road". This road once was built by General Braddock from Alexandria to Fort Duquense, located where Pittsburg is. The road was built as part of a plan to attack the French at the fort, and claim Englands right to the territory occupied by France. After many months of hard work, the road reached to the shores of the Susquehana River. Braddock decided to reconoiter the French defenses, and took with him a contingent of his officers, including a young Leiutenant named George Washington. Unfortunately for Braddock, the Indians had spotted them, and raised an alarm. A small group of Frenchmen and Indians then ambushed the party, mortally wounding Braddock, and routing what was then the largest and most powerful army on the Planet. The stretch that runs from Stone Road to Rt. 15 is part of this road. There's a legend that a pair of cannons full of gold were burried somewhere in that area. You can also check out Cox Farms and Ticonderoga Farms out there as well.

6. Bull Run Marina- nice little park, with great swimming in Bull Run.

7. Fun roads to drive on:
Fox Mill Road from Reston/Lawyers Road to Vale Road.
Vale Road from West Ox to Jermantown Road
Hunter Station Road from Huntersmill to Lawyers Road.
Stuarts Mill Road/Birdsfoot Road- from Fox Mill to Lawyers.

You should know that swimming in the Occoquan reservoir is illegal.

Keep this secret: Difficult Run from Georgetown Pike down to the Potomac river. Nice stream, boulders, and spots for picnics along the hike. Don't know if you still can, but we used to cross to other side and swim in the old quarry on property of Madeira School.

The best view in FFX County is driving west as you crest the hill on 29 in Centreville approaching the intersection with 28 and 66. Suburban dsytopia all around, but a beautiful Blue Ridge panorama on a clear day.

fuck nova. Nova exceptionalism is the most annoying trait in people I have ever seen. It does not matter what race you are or what your income is. If you are from nova it seems to me that you think you are better than others when in reality the opposite is probably the case.

Route 29 runs north to south. You may face the west from time to time but I suspet you mean south bound.

Agreed, especially at sunset right around where you cross Rt28 heading south on Rt29.

This is a beautiful hike of about 1 mile. Gets really high over the creek for a while. Just don't swim in the creek or you may get arrested by park police and end up in federal court in Alexandria with terrorists.

I used to go there when I was in high school in the early 90s. There was a small cave you could wade into on the edge of the creek that was about 10' long. At the back you would have to hoist yourself on top of a rock and the water would suck you under and spit you out into the bottom of a pool in the creek. You would only be under water for about 3 seconds but it was scary as hell. There were also some rocks that people would jump off of in the same area. People would get hurt on the rocks alot though, which is probably why the police started cracking down on swimming.

Excellent photo, and complete agreement, that is the crown jewel of Fairfax County. Of course, crossing the Legion, and hitting up the Billy Goat Trail is the best in the D.C. area. But that's besides the point. Another fine choice is Burke Lake if you are in the middle of the county, and on the South Side Pohick Bay has some great views.
