The KFC near Fairfax High school closed.

The Ruby Tuesdays near KMart closed.

Thoughts? Know of any other recent restaurant closings?

Hasn't Straw pizza closed yet? It's opened at least a month, that is about as long as anything in that space near the WalMart stays open.

Isn't that KFC going to be another Peruvian chicken place of some sort?

Im glad that KFC closed! That parking lot was a disaster....pot holes 10 feet wide 3 feet deep.

But I am looking forward to the new Taco Bell opening up next to the Five Guys....it'll broaden my option to go slumming more often.

The Chili's across from KMart is closing if it hasn't closed already.

Ruby Tuesdays is being rebranded as a seafood restaurant, still owned by Ruby Tuesdays. I can't remember the name of it but they did the same thing to a Ruby Tuesdays in Manassas.

I heard rumors months ago, on here I think, that Hooters is supposed to closed, yet it remains open.

Masala Wok closed
Sheilia Bakery Closed
Cusco - Closed
Renees - Closed
China Garden (Comfort Inn) - Closed

Restaurants that should close:
Vinnys
Bellisimo
Tippys Taco
Staw Hat
Angelicas
Red Hot & Blue
Hard Times
Everything at Fairfax Circle, except Arties.

I think we'll soon be able to add Bombay Cafe to the list. I went in there the other day and their self-serve buffet is gone. This is the location across from K-Mart as they apparently have a Sterling location, too. They're allocating more of their sales to sweets and flat breads instead. They actually still have a mini-buffet - but, you pay and then the cashier serves you what you pick out for about $7.00. Sadly, that place was eerily quiet on that day with this new policy.

Instead of changing over to the new crappier method, they should have just raised their prices. During the week, $6.00 (cash) for an Indian buffet was awfully cheap. Raise the prices to $8.50 - I'm sure they wouldn't have lost many customers, if at all. However, with the plan they have in place now, they're sure to be headed downward. Bye, Bye Bombay Cafe.

It's too bad that I don't like Minerva or Bombay Bistro more, or I'd head there instead. But, they're a bit further from where I work. Also, Jaipur is too far away from where I work.

Bombay has totally gone down hill. The new format/set up sucks and the last two times we went there, they were outside on the sidewalk welding/banging on their resturant equipment. Made me really miss the old management and miss the old Hunter Mill Deli even more. I was hoping with the new Wally world that the resturants in that centre would improve. Noticed that there is a Mike's Jersey Subs opening around the corner. Any one know anything about them?

What strikes me as odd regarding Bombay Cafe is that they have done a lot of inside renovations on and off over the years. However, I've never seen a building permit in the window. I guess they just do things as they choose and their work goes uninspected. If you end up eating there, sit close to the door in case an electrical fire breaks out.

Metro Diner was the name.

There was also an Austin Grill in that plaza at the start. It was the first to close.

Across the street, there was a restaurant called the Sweet Life Cafe, or something like that.

Quiznos
The Shade Tree

closed most likely due to the economy, high rent, and the change in the "quality of life" in nearby neighborhoods

Centreville has also lost Ned Devines. Also, Payne's restaurant closed - actually, it was a grease pit if one wanted to have their cholesterol bump by 20 points. The current Velocity 5 has been a Catbo restaurant, a Tex Mex restaurant, and opened as the Austin Grille for a short bit before turning into Velocity 5.

Now, a few words about Quiznos. When someone buys into that franchise, they have to lay out about $200,000 in franchise fees and to get a location up and running. Plus, a few years back, the word was that it would take two years before one of their locations would be profitable. However, with the closures. we're probably looking at some franchise investors who were taken to the cleaners by taking on the challenge of a Quiznos location.

Any action on the old Payne's becoming a Korean BarB que joint? Or Nail Salon. Although the new joint in the old O'Toole's don't seem to be doing gangbusters guess need to bring in more illegals from South Korea chain migration don't you know

that Velocity 5 does seem to do okay have some nice looking bartendresses

"Quiznos on 50 in the old log cabin looking house. Quiznos are dropping like flies..."

I'm for historic preservation. too many old buildings have been rolled over by development in Fairfax County but that log cabin should have been disassembled and moved to a county park. turning it into a quizno's was stupid idea. never seemed to do much business couldn't figure how it lasted this long.

Is it just me, or is Taco Bell/KFC (all owned by the same company) significantly reducing their presence in FFX Co.? The Taco Bell that used to be at the corner of Gallows & Lee Hwy was constantly busy, so I find it hard to believe that it's due to lack of customers.

Is it because of this?

Ho's Dynasty in Burke, near Fairfax Station, will be closing after Thanksgiving. They are in the Burke Town Center, along with with Giant Food, and beside Starbucks. Ho's has been a great restaurant, now run out of their long-standing location by the landlord increasing rents beyond reason. No doubt some bank or other totally unnecessary facility will take their place.

This makes me so sad to read about Ho's! We have been going there for every birthday and Christmas eve for as long as I can remember!

We need some cool Restruants around here! Fun places with a happy hour and a great atmosphere! I would love to see a sonic's come in! I've only been to a few and they were so neat to me! I also think a brew thru would be a cool idea! I'd like to see some new chain Restruants come in! We've had all this stuff for years!

The place that took over the old O'Toole's location has quite a buffet - sushi and all. However, I think the price per adult is somewhere in the $26.00 range. I guess with the slower economy a place like that might hit some bumpy patches. Then again, Alto Plaza kind of had a shaky start and it seemed like they had to mess with their formula to get the right mix to draw people in. Though, I'll have to admit, I've never been to Alto Plaza nor the new restaurant in the old O'Toole's location.

I wonder if you've been paying attention. That taco bell was seized via eminent domain to make room for the utility improvements and subsequent road widening. There is a new taco bell opening at Fairfax and Main next to five guys.

KFC's money is in China now, they don't really care about US operations, and I would imagine that Popeyes and Chick Fil A were a 1-2 punch for the KFC on fairfax blvd. Popeyes probably didn't do the Vienna KFC any favors either.

Part of Taco Bell's growth strategy includes more shopping centers, and wifi and televisions in most units in the next 3 years by the way.

I'm sure KGC is more popular in the midwest and north but here in DC we have plenty of places to get "grilled" chicken and it probably isn't the cash cow it's supposed to be

When the Fairfax KFC closed, there was a link posted to a news article on how the company was cutting back on the number of franchises that they have open in the U.S. Basically, they are over-saturated in some markets and some franchises are cannibalizing others. For those that remain open, this is good news. However, if you own one of the franchises that's slated to close, maybe the news isn't as good.

The Taco Bell in Merrifield was apparently one of the busiest in U.S. $1.2 million for the property seems a little light for that sight considering the money that place must have been generating

probably part of the plan is county told vdot they didn't want a big old tacky taco bell sitting in the middle of their revitalized Merrifield

I'm familiar with the case of the log cabin and the quizno's don't live in WFCCA area. still think they should have moved the cabin to a county park.

I'm trying to imagine where Gino's was. I know the intersection - 2 Exxon stations, a Rite Aid, the Rt 29 diner, etc. Did I miss anything?

Actually, I don't think they ripped down the whole structure. They basically removed all the ghetto tin and junk that was nailed onto the structure and then removed the other materials down to the skeleton and then rebuilt it into a bank. It probably still smells like farts, though. I do remember having a very good chicken fajita salad there, though. I don't have much to comment on regarding their other food, though.

The Kings Park location is now called San Vito's, it has changed quite a bit over the years but I suppose you could say it is still the same place, still good.

lol -- such a bad area to open a place, I guess. That Metro Diner tanked quick. Not sure what it is with that area? Seems the main drag with the wine place, Panera, and Potbelly are doing okay. Although, with those new townhouses going in.. maybe that will boost things a little.

Taco Bell and KFC are not restaurants, that is not food.

Disgusting.

Do you have any clue where those "chickens" come from, what they're fed and injected with, or how they are raised ? If you did you wouldn't eat that crap.

Whats the deal with that place down on 50 past the Harley Dealership. Has a weird name like Zytino or something. Place has had weeds growing out of the parking lot for years that could use one of these to clear sorry my image posting skills suck. Maybe someone can fix the link. Place always has lights on during the day for some reason.

Sam & Harry's was a great steak house and it was always packed. I wonder what happened ... I notice the downtown location on 19th street closed, too... sounds like incompetent management

What Houlihan’s closed? There was one in the Hilton Springfield … some years ago, it replaced the beloved and greatly missed Blue Parrot Lounge, one of NoVa’s great middle age pick up joints. Poetic justice if it closed.

I see George Mason University has taken over the old Metro Diner site in wonderfully redeveloped downtown fairfax. I think GMU has some culinary program going on.
Noticed that another restaurant is gone in that area. Next to Woody's Ice Cream parking lot, think it was third restaurant in that location to close. when some dudes go to bank to get loan doesn't the banker ask them about location and have they done a market study on the area. I don't think the 3rd restaurant at that location lasted a year. Of course, I don't think foster's Grille lasted much longer than a year. I mean why bother.

In other news the end has come as it does for all. Bar-B-Que Country in Vienna has finally bit the dust. It was a mere shadow of its glory days back in the 1990's when it had some of the best bar-b-que in town. I think argument between father and son led to the downfall of the company. The Bar-b-que Country in Vienna had been asian owned for a number of years and the food just weren't the same. baffling how it held on so long. rarely saw anyone in the joint in recent years when I went to Cenan Bakery. Rumor that the son has a barbque place somewhere in the hinterlands, like Warrenton?

Vinnie's in Fairfax City still seemed open as of last week but doesn't seem to have much business for a year or so.

Can someone tell me whatever happened to the Chesapeake Bagel Bakery chain? Once so prominent in these parts and growing but then suddenly crashed. Still a few stores around carrying the name but quite obviously different ownership and bagel quality is yucky 24.

That Taco Bell in the late 80's, early 90's was the something like the highest volume of customers for all of the east coast.

Once upon a time it was Western themed joint, the name escapes me.

I think it looks all dumpy becasuse thats how most stuff is in the middle east or afghanistan looks. Its probably part of the authenticity.

Also, I though Piccalomo was already in Fairfax City once, next to what is now Al Maza.

They probably over leveraged on thier financing, more competition popped up (Dunkin Donuts selling bagels, Panera), work force demographic shift (college/highs school kids to immigrants), change in consumer preferences (bagels were once thought of to be healthy, then studies said otherwise) all led to a decreases in Cashflow.

There are so many good places on or near K Street, now, that I think Sam & Harry's is too out of the way. Also, with lobbying reform, I think the higher priced a la carte places have suffered. Conversely, McCormick and Schmick is making a killing in downtown Dc.

I know this is stupid but i always thought of the Green Turtle as being distinctly MD and Glory Days being Distinctly VA. Eachone would stay on thier respective side of the River. I think this is an act of War by GT and Glory Days need to move in Gaithersburg with thier shitty sports bar concept.

The lobbying business is doing quite well. Mortons and Prime Rib are doing quite well.

On the other hand, a LOT of mid tier restaurants have shut on the "west end".

Bombay Palace
Thai Kingdom
Legal Seafoods
Sam & Harrys
Le Tarbouche

Kellari Taverna over on 17th and K is the third restaurant in that space in about 5 years. The organic salad place next to it apparently closed before New Years.

Lots of dead restaurants on K.
