How to stay warm without heating bills in Fairfax.
Posted by: Jack FrostY ()
Date: October 23, 2011 06:55PM

So now that I pay my own bills, I've decided that I dont need heating as much as I thought. I live alone in a 1400sqft single family home which is pretty poorly insulated overall. Besides wearing a sweater, what other ways could I heat just myself in this house with maximizing my savings on has/electric?

Anyone else this cheap/poor to do this?

Get a space heater?

Is the electric that a space heater going to use end up negating the savings of not using heat?

Space heater is fine. Also, close off rooms you aren't using very often.

Just make sure your pipes don't freeze. 60 degrees on the thermostat is recommended. Then just bundle up!

No because if you just use one or two space heaters you can just take them to the room your in, you don't have to heat the whole house.

Do you have a wood fire place?

Remember, don't fall asleep with your wacky heating ideas ON

Get a Vornado. Very efficient and powerful room heater.

If you do not have small kids this type of stove can heat your whole family room.

May I ask what your heating bills are per month?

Plus you must keep your house at sixty as the above poster stated.

Open you blinds too.

An energy audit may help you too. You can sometimes get this for free from the county.

Move to an apartment where the heat is free or provided centrally by the landlord. Just be sure to check the lease to make sure they aren't going to scam you with some fee at the end of the heating season for high energy costs.

Now of course if it is centrally provided then you run the risk that it will either be cold as shit if the landlord is jewish or hot as shit if your neighbors complain that it is too cold and the heat runs 24/7

The vornado is an electric heater. All electric heaters are 100% efficent.

1 watt hour= 3.413 btu's

It is kinda like the idea of geothermal, there is an optimum temperature to keep your house at. Less energy is used to raise the temp up from 60 degree's. If you balance your energy use between gas furnace and electric space heater. Depends on what is cheaper gas/electric for heating your sq. footage. In any case if you have a dog they act like a warming devise under that blankets!

check the windows to make sure you don't have drafts coming through. When we had a home with old drafty windows, we taped up the cracks of the windows with masking tape in the winter, to keep the cold out. Also, you can get cheap tension rods ($3 bucks, Walmart) for your windows, as well as fleece throw blankets. Use a pair of scissors to snip holes across the top of the throw blanket, then weave the tension rod through the snips in the fleece throw blanket. Mount the rod in your window frame. It does a fantastic job of keeping the cold out, the warm air in. If it gets dirty, easy to throw into the washer. Cheaper than those insulated curtains, easy to set up. Worked wonders to keep our kids' rooms warm when we lived in drafty apartments. Also, when you go to bed at night, set thermostat low at 65 or 62. Invest in a fleece blanket (about $20.) Put that on top of you, under your sheets. The fleece will keep your warmer than flannel or any regular sheets, without having to crank up the thermostat. We keep our thermostat at 65 all winter, sometimes 62 (we have gas heat). We wear sweaters, turtlenecks, fuzzy socks. The cooler air in winter is actually better for you, less chance of sinus infections/dry air, etc.

The efficiency of any system depends on the definition of the boundaries of the system. For an electrical energy customer the efficiency of electric space heating can be 100% because all purchased energy is converted to building heat. However, if the power plant supplying electricity is included, the overall efficiency drops. For example, a fossil-fuelled power plant may only deliver 4 units of electrical energy for every 10 units of fuel energy released. Even with a 100% efficient electric heater, the amount of fuel needed for a given amount of heat is more than if the fuel was burned in a furnace or boiler at the building being heated. If the same fuel could be used for space heating by a consumer, it would be more efficient overall to burn the fuel at the end user's building.

Do you have a finished basement? Usually, the temperatures down there are warmer than the main level. Also, how old are your windows? You could cover the windows that face the direction where a lot of your predominant winds come from with plastic to cut down on heat loss. Also, those insulated foamy cut-outs that you install behind your electrical outlet and switch plates should prevent the seepage of colder air into your house. Finally, don't overlook the solar options. I believe there might be some excellent solar credits this year when I last checked. The credits might make enough of a tax savings for you that you could pay for the solar option - or, at least most of it.

Best of luck! Hopefully, you don't have a heat pump. I hate those bloody things in the winter. I'm more of a gas heat kind of person.

Propane is a rip off.

No, they don't teach efficiency ratings of space heaters in high school....

Anyway, as others have pointed out, a new space heater will be more energy efficient and less costly than turning on the central heating.

Nice tall insulated curtains and nice shower type rods .. section off 1 or 2 parts of the house .. space heaters ..

keep themosat .. 60 or below.

open over after cooking.
if single and can deal .. sleep in front of the fire place.

cardboard over the windows .. paint one side white .. looks like a blind from the outside ..
put blankets under doors with vents closed in rooms not using.
strip insulate door frames.
check for drafts .. and take care of.
use an electric blanket.
use heavy wool blankets.
invest in a wood burning stove. get free wood from craigslist ads

Open blinds on direct sunlight windows only, during direct sun light hours only.
buy insulated curtains for you windows.

One problem with using these ideas is the complaints of others in a home.

When I was stationed there, winters were brutal.
They had these 6”diameter 8” long cylinders of charcoal called “yun tanh”
They had these compartments in thee floor where they would burn these.
Koreans slept on this heated floor.
Every year on the news, some huge family is taken out of their houses in body bags bc of the CO poisoning.
SAD!

On a lighter note, a digital radiator style heater is my prime choice to heat house/rooms.....
Get the $80-$100 ones not those $39 ones at Walmart.
There’s a reason Lowe’s sells outta those once the mercury drops!!
Keep it on the lowest setting when you aren’t home, then, crank it up when u walk in the door.

Check the electrical outlets on the exterior walls to see if any air is coming in through the plug holes as I had happening pretty bad in a previous place. It is not a super great heat savings, but every little helps. If not use the plugs for plugging electrical stuff, get some of those cheap plastic child safety plugs available at most hardware, department, or discount stores. Also helps keeps some bugs out of your home, one less avenue for them to travel in. If you live in an apartment or townhouse sharing walls with neighbors, use the child safety plugs in the remaining unused electrical outlets, as one bug blocker from your wall adjacent neighbor homes.

While you are at it, check for wall holes around your pipes on all walls, exterior facing and interior, a friend who is exterminator for one of the major companies, said wire mesh works good, which helps keep mice out, as they only need 1/4 inch to get in as their bodies are not bony like rats, and mice cannot chew through the wire mesh.

My parents house in Oakton had a heat pump. People wore sweaters in the winter with the thermostat set to 72. I have a natural gas fueled furnace. We often turn it down to 69 or 70 because 72 gets to be a little warm.

buy a thermostat you can program - it will pay for itself. after 9pm let it go down to 55 and program it to warm up to say 65 or 68 when you wake up. Program it to go back down to 50-55 when you are gone at work during the day and warm back up to 60 when you come home. I have a family and only run 5 degrees above that schedule. The key time is for it to be warm in the morning and when you have dinner. I like a cold house at night. I have trouble sleeping above 68 degrees.

Space heaters are dangerous and a waste of money you are trying to save. You are better off with sweaters, blankets, warm socks and warm hat.

the aggresive sales people (also usign media they didn't own or pay for), assured them their house would be warm during the winter. It was not, ever warm for them during the winter.

As you mentioned: insulating and zone heating are the primary concerns.

(infact many hotel systems have solenoids to operate the vents to control zones, a system schematic to read for Carrier (made in USA) systems)

Less mentioned but also effective!

So you heard of keroscene (heavy mineral oil, so hot it sets your floor or curtains on fire), electric (electric bills!), natural gas (prices have gone up), Oil (prices remained moderate when NG got into competition), and Wood burning (very hot and a fire hazard, excellent if installed dual vent, using easy "pellets fuel" bumps the price though).

COAL HEAT.

It's extremely hot and efficient if you can get it delivered (shipping rate) at a reasonable cost. It's used in many old and also new West Virginia homes.

They stopped using it for a while due to illnesses and deaths (carbon monoxide and also coal burning chemical fumes). HOWEVER: newer models have both DUAL VENTING and adds temperature at the burning point to neutralize toxicity: they're safe now.

vermont wood stove, dual vented, forced air, quality iron casing - enough btu to heat typical fx co homes easily, and you can cook eggs simply by placing them on top of it!

us-stove-clayton-1602r-coal-and-wood-bur

a modern coal stove: dual vented and twin blower, likely has the BTU to heat your mansion ?

Get a job with FCPS (fx co pub school / gov) and a "no fuss" electric heater.

You'll be making 3x - 15x what non-government workers make.

You won't even notice the bill increase your so far ahead of "the little people".

Assuming your a fx co gov worker who displays "vacations" on your social app pages, and no one knows where you are 1/2 the year ...

MOVE TO YOUR BUNGALO CLOSE TO THE EQUATOR IN SOUTH AMERICA - THEY ARE MOWING BERMUDA GRASS AND GROWING BANANA THIS TIME OF YEAR.

There's simply no doubt part of your seedy out-source contract for "leaf blowing" services for FCPS included a free place to live in south america.

WRONG again suckwad democrats.

DIRT HAS INSULATION VALUE EQUIVALENT TO HAVING INSTALLED INSULATION CORRECTLY - but since skilled labor is impossible to find in fairfax (illegals get sent instead): they never seal insulation correctly so air goes right around it!

which then means: dirt is warmer

heat rises so when you add a central heating unit that "focuses on heating the upstairs" (80's 90's housing), then of course the upstairs is warmer!

My heat pump is over 300% efficient. Gas furnaces cant even get to 96%.

Years ago I had a 3rd floor garden style condo in Arlington. I jumped up in the attic and tied one of my electric outlets to the circuit that supplied outlets in the common area hallway. That circuit was on the condo associations meter. I ran a space heater off that circuit all winter for 3 winters and saved a ton of money.

your right if you include that heat rises and that windows during the day let the sun in, while most basements don't get that advantage. but what is letting in the cold that's falling into the basement? the upstairs is.

So, it is quite clear that you never took a physics class or you were unable to understand it. You are very very very ignorant and/or stupid. Merry Christmas!
