I don't get it.

As I understand it, you're against greed? OK... but who's greed? The government greed? Corporations greed? Rich peole's greed?

Let's start with Coporate greed which you appear to oppose. Corporations are in business to make money by providing goods or services and charging for them. They typically charge cost plus some amount for profit. Corporations are legal entities that are run by people through elected Boards of Directors and shareholders and the people they appoint to run their company.

If citizens like the product and the price, they do business with the company (or go to work for the company), if they don't like the product or price they spend their money elsewhere.

SO that's the model. Corprations are not social welfare agencies and have no obligation to give profits to people other than their shareholders who spent their money to purchase share od the company.

Is that the greed you are talking about? Companies keeping too much profit?
because that's capitalism and that's what our nation is built upon. Are you trying to change that? If so, which model would you go to?

No. They aren't looking to overthrow capitalism, just make it work better for the rest of us. Yes, corporations have no obligation to anyone but their shareholders. That's why we make laws to restrict their behaviors for the greater good.

For instance, a company would much rather spew whatever byproducts are created in their industrial processes than to pay to dispose of it safely, because it is cheaper to do so. However, we decided we didn't like it when our rivers caught on fire, so we made that sort of thing illegal.

So many of the people have no clue what they are even protesting. For example the unions are there saying "don't bail out Wall St or the banks". Yet they were all for the bailouts of airlines and auto makers when it helped their union.

The regulatory system needs reform. The problems aren't brought to the fore until the problem institutions have the government backed in the corner. They seem to always get their way and get the active participation of the government in covering up their misdeeds (anyone Wallstreeter from the mortgage fiasco in jail yet?).

The current system needs transparency and regulators who aren't captive to the dominant firms in an industry. The basis of a free market is that everyone has equal treatment and access to accurate and timely information. Otherwise, it becomes an insider's market.

The greed I see is the big multinationals moving the jobs and their profits offshore while simultaneously lobbying the government for more stimulus everytime there's a dip in the economy.

The greed I see is the large banks lobbying the regulators for accounting treatments that grossly misrepresent their health and distort their profits so the executives can suck the money out. When the jig is finally up, they hold the financial markets hostage to extract more bailouts from the governments.

There are many more examples.

I agree. We need some level government regulation to address things like worker protections, environmental protection and abuse of consumers etc. However, we already have those protections in place.

So what exactly does Occupy want when it comes to corporate greed? Is it a restriction on how much profit a corporation can make?

The Other Occupation: How Wall Street Occupies Washington
By Zaid Jilani on Oct 12, 2011 at 2:00 pm

As ThinkProgress has previously noted, the 99 Percent Movement has been set off thanks to long-standing economic inequities and and a recession caused primarily by Wall Street’s misdeeds.

But Wall Street did not engage in reckless financial behavior — which plunged 64 million people worldwide into extreme poverty — in a vacuum.

In order to engage in these practices that brought the world’s economy to its knees, Wall Street had to make sure that the federal government based in Washington, DC would both de-regulate the financial industry (and provide lax oversight) and that Congress and the Federal Reserve would bail out banks with few strings attached if they were in danger of failing. The way the financial industry and big banks won this kid glove treatment from the federal government is by occupying Washington — flooding it with campaign contributions, lobbyists, and its own staffers and executives to occupy key positions of power. ThinkProgress has assembled a rundown of three ways Wall Street has occupied Washington:

1. Wall Street Occupies Washington With Massive Campaign Contributions: On Nov. 12, 1999 President Bill Clinton signed into law the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933, a Depression-era law that created a firewall between commercial and investment banking. Repealing this law was one of the top legislative goals of the financial industry. In the 1998 election cycle, commercial banks spent $18 million on congressional campaign contributions, with 65 percent going to Republicans and 35 percent going to Democrats. Securities and investment firms donated over $40 million. The mega-bank Citibank spent $1,954,191 during that cycle, and it was soon able to merge with Travelers Group as a result of the repeal of banking regulations. Between 2008 and 2010, when new financial regulations were being written following the financial crisis, the finance, insurance, and real estate industries spent $317 million in federal campaign contributions, with $73 million of that coming from Political Action Committees (PACs). The hold of campaign contributions is starkly bipartisan. As Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA) explained to Real Clear Politics in an interview last year, he couldn’t get a vote on a windfall profits tax on bonuses at bailed out banks due to campaign contributors. “I couldn’t even get a vote,” Webb explained. “And it wasn’t because of the Republicans. I mean they obviously weren’t going to vote for it. But I got so much froth from Democrats saying that any vote like that was going to screw up fundraising.”

2. Wall Street Occupies Washington With Its Lobbyists: One way to control what Washington lawmakers do is to give them access to exclusive funding streams that allow them to finance their campaigns. But yet another is to control the stream of information. From the deregulatory period of 1998 to 2009, the financial sector spent $3.3 billion on lobbyists. In 2007, the financial industry employed 2,996 separate lobbyists, five for every member of Congress. During the debate over financial reform last year, the industry flooded the nation’s capital with its own lobbyists. On just one issue — regulating derivatives — financial industry lobbyists outnumbered consumer group lobbyists and other pro-reform advocates by 11 to 1. In fact, by 2010, the industry had hired a whopping 1,600 former federal employees as lobbyists. Included among these lobbyists were high-ranking former public leaders like former Democratic House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt (MO) and Kenneth Duberstein, Ronald Reagan’s chief of staff. Much of this lobbying is done through elite K Street firms that specialize in hiring government insiders. Yet there are also bank-funded front groups like the Chamber of Commerce that deploy lobbyists on behalf of the big banks.

3. Wall Street Literally Occupies Washington By Placing Its Staff In Government Positions: Shortly after Clinton signed into law the repeal of the firewall between commercial and investment banking, his Treasury Secretary and Goldman Sachs alumni Robert Rubin left the government to work for newly-formed Citigroup — whose merger was only possible thanks to the policies Rubin championed and enacted. His compensation at Citigroup topped $15 million, not including stock options. Goldman’s alumni are found across the government, including bailout architect and former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, Paulson’s bailout chief Neil Kashkari, and Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman Gary Gensler. The revolving door, of course, works both ways. Obama budget director Peter Orszag joined Citigroup shortly after leaving the government. This is just a small sampling of Wall Street’s staffers who found their way into government.

These three facets of lobbying do not include how these financial interests fan their funding out among nonprofits and think tanks, and how they fund media campaigns and public relations efforts within the parameters of the geographic territory of the District of Columbia. The amount of money spent on these tasks is likely formidable but is difficult to track.

There are reforms that can be enacted to combat this Wall Street infiltration of Washington. Ranging from public financing of federal campaigns to new disclosure laws to placing restrictionson lobbying from federal public officials, these reforms would blunt the impact of big money on federal policymaking. Yet only vigilance from the American public can get such reforms enacted.

I support infrastructure and so does the Occupy movement who wants to create public jobs to build infrastructure (like in the Jobs Bill that the right refuses to pass) so get your hate straight.

To clarify, Occupy also opposes the government's misuse of public tax money as well. For example giving those Wall Street CEO fatcats the multi-million dollar bonuses for their failed businesses. Occupy is against the policy of "Rewarding Failure".

Listen, nothing's going to change unless you and your neighbors take a stand. Why not come and let your voice be heard? And if you still don't feel good about it, you can go on your way in peace. What do you have to lose?

Also, here's a map with all the "Occupy" protests currently going on in the world.

They need to occupy the Federal Reserve and the other central banks that protect the large "private" banks. A lot of the market abuse by the big banks and hedge funds would go away if interest rates were in line with inflation, instead of being artificially suppressed. They would no longer be able to hoard commodities because of the cost of money. Pension funds and retirees wouldn't be forced into high-risk stocks, commodities, and other investments because the bulk of their portfolio now earns negligible interest. The Fed is contributing to the shortfall in public pension funds which will eventually be bailed out by the taxpayer.

How ironic that President Barry supports the protestors yet he himself has more campaign money than all Republican challengers combined. Whose side do you think he is on?

That the protestors think he is on their side is proof they dont have a clue. Barry doesnt have those $10,000 a plate dinners for the Lamb Center residents.

Why would be fired? It's on a Saturday and if you're afraid for your job when you are protected by the Constitution, what does this say about America?

PS: I am not a liberal, I vote Republican 100% of the time. I did not vote for Obama or any democrat.

OK, I'll admit I'm a relic of the 60's. "Power to the People!" - "Rage against the machine" - "Peace and Love"

yeah, right.

If the Occupy group is serious, why stop at Wall Street Greed. How about let's target Oprah, I saw somehwere that she's worth or makes over $200 million a year, how about Peytin Manning, didn't he just sign a $100 million contract, what's Tiger Woods worth, $100 mill (who knows after the divorce?),

how about LaBrone James, he makes something like $40 or $50 mill a year.

Oh yeah, just to keep it real, Rex Grossman makes over $1 mill a year, Mike Shanahan makes something like $7 mil per year, and Dan Snyder( the Danny as Tony Kornheiser likes to call him) makes somewhere around $100 mill per year.

Now go back through this list and identify something of real value that is produced by any of them!

I gather that the Occupy group is protesting about the inequitable distribution of wealth. Well, Jack Dale makes over $200,000 and the average teacher makes somewhere around $80,000 - where's the justice in that? If that pay was proprtionally equitable then a teacher's salary would be something like $120,000. Of course, one might say both Dale and the teachers are grossly overpaid, but who pays them? That's right the taxpayers, so wouldn't the Occupiers want to pay them even more?

I'm thinking this whole effort is a brilliant political strategy by the Obama administration to redirect the anger of the majority of Americans toward either Wall Street or the protesters. Anything but focus on the Obama economy!

Occupy Wall Street Marks One Month
Posted Oct. 17, 2011, 8:20 a.m. EST by OccupyWallSt
http://occupywallst.org/

Occupations Spread to Over 100 US Cities
Movement For Economic Justice Gains Global Momentum

Liberty Square, New York, NY — One month ago today about 2,000 people rallied in Lower Manhattan and marched up Broadway. Stopping at Zuccotti Park an estimated 150 stayed the night and began an encampment. Renaming the space “Liberty Square,” we kicked off a protest against bank bailouts, corporate greed, and the unchecked power of Wall Street in Washington. In the last month, the message of “We are the 99%” has won the hearts and minds of over half of Americans (according to a recent Time survey) and is gaining ground globally, with 1500 protests in 82 countries this past Saturday (October 15).

“I am here to celebrate the 30th day of this protest against corporate power,” said Karanja Gacuca from Liberty Square, a former Wall Street analyst who now organizes with Occupy Wall Street. “Concerned about the egregious Wall Street bonuses — particularly after the industry accepted a tax-payer bailout and the middle class continues to be squeezed — I believe it's time for a fairer system that provides health care, education, and opportunity for all, and rejects corporate influence over government.”

Inspired by the uprisings across the Arab world, and fueled by the feelings of anger and helplessness of everyday Americans, in the past month Occupy Wall Street has:

•Gone Global: On October 15th, protests were held from North and South America to Asia, Africa and Europe, with over 1,500 events in 82 countries, as part of a global day of action.

•Flourished with Diversity: Occupiers of different ages, races, walks of life, and political beliefs have joined the movement. The mix grew quickly to include students, elderly people, families with children, construction workers on their lunch breaks, unemployed Wall Street executives, Iraq & Afghanistan veterans, moms, and many others.

•Gained Support in the Heartland: Occupy actions are happening all across middle America, from Kethcum, ID to Kalamazoo, MI, from Orlando to Anchorage. Every day financial contributions arrive along with clothes, food, and notes of support from all across the country. A couple from West Virginia who have been sending supplies to Liberty Square occupiers writes: “We are so grateful for all of you involved in this defense of America. We firmly believe this is ‘it.’ If we can't grab this democracy this time, we'll sink and it will be a long time before we will have this opportunity again. Thank you for taking time from your busy life to be there.”

•Changed the Conversation: The people-powered force of shared anger at a broken system that profits the top 1% at the expense of the rest of us has shifted our national dialogue. The Occupy Wall Street protest has become a cultural phenomenon, mentioned everywhere from jokes on Saturday Night Live to the solemn dedication the national memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by President Obama Sunday. We, the occupiers, have shown our country how to come together and respect differences while working together to build a movement for change.

What a month, and we are only getting started!

Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District, and has spread to over 100 cities in the United States and actions in over 1,500 cities globally. #OWS is fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations. The movement is inspired by popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and aims to expose how the richest 1% of people are writing the rules of an unfair global economy that is foreclosing on our future.

Well, they would certainly say those people should pay more in taxes than they probably do now. As for teachers, I'm pretty sure they would like teachers to earn a decent living so I don't know what you are arguing about here.

And, as I said, they are protesting Obama's policies as much as any others.

Rex Grossman and Mike Shanahan help produce the $100 million that Snyder makes a year. That's not valuable?

> the average teacher makes somewhere around $80,000 - where's

There are a lot of people who can do what the average teacher does. There aren't a lot of people who can do what Rex Grossman does. Before you laugh, think about just how many people could be an NFL quarterback without throwing interceptions 100% of the time or without dying the first time they got sacked. That scarcity is what makes even Rex Grossman valuable.

A group of educators is planning on going to the protest but we're concerned that the schoolboard will retaliate if we show our faces. The solution? We're going to dress up in our Halloween costumes.

That's because they aren't against Obama personally, but his policies favor the rich and corporations as much as anyone's. Well, maybe a little less than most Republicans, but not that much.

They're certainly not a pro-Obama group, let's put it that way. These aren't Democrats.

Yeah, that's the ticket! That'll show them! Put up a demonstration in some podunk, out of the way park in Centreville that's completely off the beaten path.

Here's a suggestion for you: Why not stage your protest where it's more likely to be seen by those you're actually protesting against, such as at the Govt Center?

Sheesh...good thing you're not in charge of the county, otherwise we'd *really* be screwed! :-|

The avg. teacher salary is $63,980. Remember, that's average from year one on up. http://www.fcps.edu/fs/budget/wabe/2012.pdf You can't compare that with the superintendent's salary. As a teacher, I can say I wouldn't want the superintendent's job and I'm not going to gripe about the difference in salary. Whether you agree with the man or not, he is in charge of A LOT more than I am.

Regarding the salaries of sports figures and TV personaliites. They make that money because they bring in that money. You focused on a few very select athletes. People pay $$ to see them play, to wear the team jersey, to watch them on TV. Where else should the money go? It's called a free market. Do you expect them to turn down the $$? I'm a teacher, and I'm realistic. If I could play like LeBron, or throw like Rodgers, I'd be bringing in the $$$ too.

I am the 1%. I own my own company. I pay for my employees health care, all 50 of them. I continue to give raises to my best performers. I've created about 30 jobs over the last 3 years. In 2009, when the economy hid the skids, my income was cut in half but I did not lay anyone off. My income can swing by 50% one way or the other from year to year. I travel and work constantly, much more so than most of my employees, but I'm ok with that because I get the financial rewards that come with owning a business. My business is 100% commercial - I get nothing from government contracting.

The other 99% can do any of this with will, determination, and intelligence. I have no problem if they don't, but there is no secret sauce to being a member of the 1%. I did not go to big name schools or have parents that opened doors for me, other than providing me with a good education and (I hope) good values.

The formula for success in the US is unchanged. Work hard, be smarter than the next guy, keep trying not matter what, learn from your mistakes. It's the ethics of people that have changed. People feel entitled to success, like it does not have to be earned. Like the 1% just arrived at their wealth through some corrupt deal. Sure there are some that are crooked, but for the most part the 1% bust their ass, take on responsibilities and challenges that most people would not even think of, and then see the benefits of their risk taking.

I agree for the most part, though I would say it's not about just working hard. Too many idiots in this country bust their asses for 20 years at a dead end job and then get angry they aren't rich. The road to success is having something of your own and, as you say, taking risk.

My philosophy is "work smart." Don't fuck around banging your head against a wall. Find something you enjoy doing, develop a plan, spend a few years learning everything you can to strike out on your own and then do it. Grow some balls. Don't be a pussy.

I bet he takes a dump on a cop car while his fellow protesters cheer and clap.

What disgusting animals.

Demand creates jobs, and right now, government is creating all the incremental demand for goods and services since the private sector bubbles burst in 2000 and 2008.

Total nonfarm employment is essentially flat since September 2001.

6 million jobs have been created in public education, healthcare, and military which are funded by the government for the most part (50% for healthcare ).

Therein is the problem. These useless pieces of crap want to walk out of college and into a six figure salary. Spoiled as children who were given everything when they whined they now find themselves in the real world and dont have a clue as to how to get to six figures. Their equally stupid college professors did not prepare them for things like competition and 12 hour days.

If a person from Vietnam can get here on a wooden raft from a communist country risking it all and make themselves a success then the American dream is alive, the protestors just dont see it.

Debt forgiveness my ass, you bought it you pay for it.

Is that there are no jobs, or no jobs that you deem "good enough" for you? You can go in craigslist, the Washington Post want ads, the internet or any local shopping mall where there are THOUSANDS of job listings. Stop crying about no jobs, suck it up and move on. I am tired of tax dollars paying for unemployment for individuals who think they are too good to work at Home Depot.

I don't understand why you'd be protesting against the county for turning their backs on the citizens. You have no argument to base your claims off of.

- Michael Frey has been very open to letting anyone move into Centreville and has even assisted with setting up day labor offices for illegal aliens to get jobs.

- The county has sought out housing for lower income individuals in some of the best complexes in the counties - with marble lobbies, large swimming pools and fully equipped kitchens with granite counter tops.

- Through the years of Gerry Connolly, real estate taxes on properties in Fairfax County have shot up so many "assistance" or social programs could be funded.

- The county has some of the lowest unemployment in the nation. The work is out there ... you just need to find it and have the motivation to show up when it's time to work.

In conclusion, I see little basis for your little demonstration that is about to occur. I think you should take about 30 minutes, sit in a quiet room and reflect upon what you have and all the opportunities that are out there for those of you who live in Fairfax. I think you'd quickly realize that you're pretty well off just the way you are.

As long as these pimple-faced, guilt-riddled trust fund babes don't fuck up my commute or stink things up too much, I don't give a crap.

The Fairfax Occupation has been cancelled, as it falls on the same day as the Beverly Hills Occupation movement. DAMNIT. Sorry, comrades!

Wrong the protest is still on for this Saturday starting at 10am. Here's the address...

Fairfax Occupy Movement - October 22nd
5714 Mount Gilead Road in Centreville, Va.

There are many companies in this area that have jobs advertised, however those positions have been open for at least a year and have not been filled. So all those companies that Fairfax County has been promoting as "having brought jobs to the area" have in fact hired very few or none. A recent report shows that these same companies are sitting on their cash.

Yeah brilliant!!!

Where you are planning your insignificant little "protest" is a county park in the middle of a residential neighborhood. On top of that you have chosen Centreville Day as the day you have decided to hold this little get together of yours. No one is going to be paying any attention to you...and it's likely the cops won't even let you through.

If you do get in owever, you will be protesting at a site where local NON PROFITS will be gathered to raise money for worthwhile causes and where parents will be bringing their kids to have a nice day out...and you think you will be able to win these people over with your little protest...

Time to call out the stupid!

And here I thought they were going to be smart, MEETING at a park but then making their way to the Bank of America nearby, where plenty of 28 and 29 traffic would see them. In a park? Might as well continue the ineffectual protesting via keyboard here.
