I hate the fucking campaign signs!
Posted by: wnrsm ()
Date: October 12, 2011 07:32PM

After two dozen signs for a single candidate on a single median, what makes them only put out a dozen more signs instead of two dozen more signs?

Campaigning is necessary. There's a fine line between getting a candidate's name out there and creating a fucking eyesore with a candidate's name on it.

The candidates putting out a modest number of signs are getting drowned out - so now I only notice the eyesores.

I hope that just one person putting up signs on a busy road gets whacked so we can have some reactionary legislation prohibit these signs.

So who here is positively influenced by the glut of signs? I have voted against those that show no regard for how their much name is obnoxiously plastered all over our streets.

wnrsm - I agree with your sentiments. However, your point would be taken more seriously if you didn't use the "fucking" for emphasis. Whether or not you agree, people who curse often suggest they have a limited vocabulary. (Frequent cursing also suggests you haven't mastered pragmatics.)

I'm sure the complaint has been repeated in other threads. I thought through the title more than once and stayed with it - cursing has its place despite being used excessively elsewhere. The cursing here indicates more frustration than anything.

And I don't mind the cussing because it's gotten out of control.

Who is the worst offender around your area? From Burke to Fairfax it's gotta be VElkoff. He's got like 20-30 signs all clumped together all over the place. What a douche. Having the most signs doesn't mean you win, idiot.

Velkoff's are bad, but I think Dave Marsden's take the cake. At least in my area along Lee Highway. About a zillion of them all in the same area.

We've tried to keep the signs to a minimum and I think I'm ready to nix the regular yard signs in public. We've got a bunch of 4X8s - the big signs - and I think we're going to use from now on. They're easier to see and we'll keep them in areas that aren't obstructing turn lane views or traffic. I'd rather have one big sign than 50 little ones. I need a big sign to fit my last name, anyway.

This year seems much worse than last year or 2009.

The volunteers do not pick up many of the signs after the election. Instead they blow into the roadway.
All those signs give the roads a cheap trashy look not to mention the problems they cause for road crews mowing grass. Its too bad because the median strip on the Parkway looks kind of nice in the fall but not with every political jackass painting the roads with their signs.

If you feel so strongly about a candidate then put the damn signs in your own yard. I have never heard one person in my life say they were motivated to vote for a person based on how many signs they could put up.

only one's i see leaving signs up are republicans who lose

friskydingo, the race is going well. Out every day knocking doors and talking to voters, and the reception has been great. Fundraising is getting up to where it needs to be and I'm focusing on the issues, which folks prefer to mudslinging.

As for signs, I've seen both Democrats and Republicans leave signs up after they've lost (Chris Wade had signs up in my neighborhood for over a month after the primary loss). We've got 10 days to get them up after the election.

People don't vote for someone based on the signs. But many people look at the signs as a symbol of how well a campaign is doing. The more signs, the more money they have to spend on signs and the more volunteers they have to put them up. Plus it helps with name recognition, which is always important when polls are being taken. That's the primary use of the signs. It's just a way to get your name out.

Interestingly enough, a recent visitor from Michigan was SHOCKED by our campaign signs. There there is a 20 foot from the corner rule and some other things, like no more than so high.. I think under two feet.

In some countries... they have specified places and sizes and each candidate gets a slot. And that is it. Their system works well too!

Our community's access to a main fast road the view is blocked by signs.

There are ways to do this folks. Are there any rules about sign placement?
I thought a few years back there was a small fracas over it all.

I think the signs are a necessary evil..

Like commercial advertising - when was the last time you saw a doritos add and had to run out to 7-11 to buy them? Probably not often. But if there were no dorito ads you wouldn't know that doritos exist.

Same with the candidates, without the signage and the name recognition most of the uninformed population probably wouldn't be able to name one candidate off the top of their head.

I do think the signage is overboard though.

They are your representative in government, what is so offensive about knocking on your door?

Just don't answer the door or tell them "no thank you." maybe a No Trespassing sign would help too if you hate people coming to your door so much.

Back when I had more time on my hands and drove a lot for work (deliveries), I would recognize the schedules and routines of the people who plant the signs. I got a mild kick out of snatching the signs back up almost immediately after they were placed.

This is the attitude I just don't get.

The folks in Richmond can raise your taxes, take away your house, shut down your business, restrict your rights and generally make a royal mess of things. Is it really an invasion of your privacy to take 2 minutes to interview the guy who wants to represent you to make sure you're making the right decision on election day?

People spend more time pondering their Starbucks order (granted, when you're paying $10 for a cup of coffee, you should take the time to order well).

Fortunately, the vast majority of folks I've met are happy to see someone out there working and listening to what they're interested in.

Less than a month people, the signs will be gone.

I suppose there is more of a correlation between incumbency and number of signs.

The incumbents simply have more money to spend, and they spend it on signs.

I can understand being mad at the 'voter id' gangs (of paid canvassers) that go about the neighborhood gathering data regarding your voting habits . . .

But the actual politicians? They're sticking their necks out, trying to meet the voters . . . give them a chance to chat, they're normal people . . .

Remember, politicians are public servants at best, aspiring saps at worst. The worst you can do is tell them you won't vote for them. But be polite!

The signs on public property in Fairfax are illegal, per Fairfax code.

Take down as many as you like. The permits expressly state that signs are to be posted on private property only. Dumping them in county dumpsters (found in the larger county parks, for example) would be illegal, I suppose, but a huge pile of them in a county dumpster would garner notice by Parks Authority workers, who'd surely complain and get the ball rolling internally in terms of county government,

Down in Mount Vernon, Gerry Hyland was kind enough to make his small signs the "popsicle" kind, with wooden stakes. They make excellent kindling. All signs could be used for mulching veggie gardens; simply place the signs on bar ground, and pile mulch 6 inches deep on top.

I have this continuing fantasy of getting up at 3 am and just ripping as many out of the ground as I can. Look: They're eyesores. They're ineffective to get people to vote for a candidate. Maybe the volunteers who stick them everywhere feel productive, but that's about it. Meanwhile, I get those annoying nasty, dishonest jumbo postcards in the mail. Got one the other day and I couldn't even figure it out. Some candidate was criticizing another candidate for having criticized him; that second candidate had been quoting the estranged wife of someone who knew the first candidate. Huh?!?!?

I do have some sympathy for the person who posted who's a Libertarian. It's true that the media ignore almost all non-establishment candidates, so you do have to get your name out there. Still, those signs aren't the way.

Tell me: Do those signs--those THOUSANDS of signs--tell you anything about any of the candidates? Do they help you IN ANY WAY make an informed decision on who to vote for?

That's not sad. The more signs I see for a particular candidate, the less likely I will be to vote for them.

Maybe one way to stop the signs is to somehow organize a tally of how much each candidate has blighted their potential jurisdictions and turn it into a voting recommendation.

Don't vote for that asshole that has literally 50+ signs visible from any single spot. Those big 3'x6' (or whatever) signs count as ten each.

And yes, it is against Fairfax County code.

What I don't understand, however, is why it's ok for other counties' candidates to put their huge, traffic line-of-sight blocking signs in the median in our county.

There are regulations on sign placement, but separate rules for commercial signage and political signage. Even though signage is frequently placed in violation of County and State rules, citizens who remove signage - even when it is illegal - can be prosecuted as thieves and have been in Northern Va. Removing signs, whether they are sanctioned or illegal has been construed by Courts to be vigilanteism. We are supposed to rely on our local governments as the empowered authority to remove illegal signs. And we can all see how well that is working.
A few activists have tried to push for reforming the rules on sign placement and for more County staffing to remove the signs(since they're "empowered" to remove the signs) and we can all see how well that is working. You can get a special permit through VDOT to remove certain signage on VDOT portions of our roads, but good luck sorting VDOT roads from County (and other authorities) roads. The rules pertaining to political signs are going to be the very last rules to be reformed toward more strict standards becuase the rules are written by the same politicians who put up all "vote for me" signs. Google "street spam" to see struggles on this issue that are taking place nationwide.

Guess I'm a "community organizer", since I enjoy volunteering my free time removing signs, regarldless of the candidate they endorse.

As an attorney who cut his teeth working on campaign finance law, I'd say it's safe to harvest the signs where they are posted on public rights-of-way. If they are planted on private property, it is theoretically possible for a party removing such signs to be prosecuted for theft. But otherwise, have at it.

Now if only I could find someone willing to give me a sweet gig teaching ConLaw and then willing to back me in my shoe-in, political-machine-driven run for the Senate . . .

Look closely at Velkoffs thousands of signs. There are yellow figures near the top. From a distance it looks like the second guy has a rifle and is shooting at the other figures.

What ordinance did Fairfax City put in place? I have noticed absolutely no campaign signs within the city boundaries except in private lawns and then it is clearly just one or two in one spot.

It's not an ordinance, Justataxpayer - it's that the City handles their own roads and they are extremely vigilant about removing signs from the medians and public right-of-ways in the City.

Just one of the many benefits of local control over the roads.

wallpaper of democracy. They will be gone soon. Better than door to door salesfolks though, although a cockroach is better than that

Look at the signs as an opportunity for a little mischief. Here's a few ideas:

1. Turn them all upside down.
2. Use them as targets for moving paintball practice or play Whack the sign with them. This one probably isn't legal.
3. Move all of the signs so they are all running exactly one behind the other so only the front and back signs are visible, and make certain the front and back signs are for some weght loss or karate program.
4. Put all of the signs on a pile in a stack on the ground with one or two signs holding them in place, again ideally a non-political sign.
5. Identify the most vocal Democrat or Republican in the area and gather up a bunch of the opposing side's sign and line them up on the route to the guys house.
6. Pick some objectionable group like the KKK or ACLU and print up a bunch of lables indicating that group endorses a particular candidate. Then go out and slap those labels on the signs.
7. Run off a bunch of papers saying Support the Troops and go out and staple them onto the signs. Then wait to see which candidates send out their people to pull them off, taking pics of them doing so and post it on YouTube with a message Candidate X doesn't support the troops.

Looking for who to vote for? Christopher DeCarlo had this to say to the Connection...
" I am the only candidate following the law and the personal written request from VDOT not to place campaign signs along the roadways. If you don’t like signs along the roads vote for candidates that follow the law and your vote will help keep the medians clear in future elections."

Linton showed up at my doorstep. That was before I saw a sign for every blade of grass on the median.
