Make the roads first and then build the homes.

100 Million dollars for 2 lanes four miles long. I do not understand how this project is costing this much money.

10 foot bike lanes shared use paths on each side will probably add to this cost. Good thing the bikers will never use them.

the Bike lane stops in Poland road and does not connect to South Riding and nor does it connect to the chantilly shopping center. Its a total waste.
Instead that money can be spend on roads used by cars.

4 miles adding 1 extra lanes on both sides takes 3 years to complete?

SIX-LANING OF ROUTE 50 BEGINS WEST OF CHANTILLY
3.7-mile widening in Fairfax and Loudoun counties

FAIRFAX—Construction begins next week to widen Route 50 from four to six lanes between Poland Road in Loudoun County and Route 28 in Fairfax County. The 3.7-mile design-build project will take three years to complete.

Motorists will begin seeing construction equipment and work crews on Oct. 5, weather permitting. Through next spring, crews will be working only on westbound Route 50, restriping pavement and shifting lanes to make room for construction.

There will be no lane closures on holidays or during rush hours, but motorists can expect lane closures overnight and mid-day. During all other times, all lanes and turn lanes will remain open.

Route 50 narrows from six lanes to four just west of Route 28. Increased development and congestion in Loudoun County creates backups during much of the day on the existing four-lane segment, especially during morning and evening rush hours.

When completed, traffic-clogged Route 50 will have three lanes in each direction, improved turn lanes and traffic signals, curb and gutter on the outside lanes, crosswalks and pedestrian signals, widened and upgraded bridges, and pathways on both sides of the road. The road will also be more level and provide wider buffers between travel lanes and roadside hazards.

The $100 million improvement project includes $8.3 million for preliminary engineering, $24.5 million for right of way acquisition, $9.9 million for utility relocation and $57.2 million for construction.

Shirley Contracting is the contractor for this design-build project.

At least make it a stereotype that applies to the situation.

Guys that build roads are NOT government employees. They work for a PRIVATE contractor that submitted the LOWEST bid to the government for the job. No way that contractor is going to pay guys to stand around. But, you can't wait til the concrete trucks show up and then start calling guys to come in to work. They gotta be there even if it involves some waiting.

Why is that private builders make homes faster than private contractos can buid roads. its not like the tecnology in road building has changed.( gotten easier)

Also this streach of road does not present any challanges in terms of consturction.

why 3 years for 4 miles?

Yeah dude, maybe you're right, there's no challenges in building a road with a couple hundred thousand cars (most of them with nobody driving) whizzing by just feet from the workers. Nuthin to it.

Yep, building new houses in a former cornfield is comparable to that!

Oh OK, working in the fucking dark is a piece of cake. No wasted time moving floodlights and shit.

Most of you jokers couldn't build a fucking birdhouse. But a road project should have been done yesterday so you can get to your dreary cubicle a few minutes sooner.

BTW, don't get your hopes up, this road improvement won't speed up your commute. By the time it's done, there will 50 or 60,000 new cardboard townhouses out there. No net gain. The only thing that will help traffic is the total collapse of the government and/or $10 a gallon gas. Both of which I think are coming.

Over 8 million dollars to do an engineering study. And what do we get for this 8 million? The solution pretty much addresses every traffic concern that was prevalent in 1990! If given a homework assignment, the typical 4th grade class at Lees Corner would provide similar results. How about a proactive study? Maybe an express lane from Loudoun Cty. Parkway to Route 28? How about removing all the traffic lights that provide for rush hour choke points? And three years to pave six miles of road. C'mon. The Allies moved a million men, along with supplies, from the coast of France to Berlin in less than a year. And they were being shot at! We are now being told that advanced equipment and technology provides this result? Lastly, we can all be rest assured that the actual amount of money will be far higher than the estimate and three years will end up being much closer to four or five.

I must agree with the question regarding 8 million that was spent on a study. What study? I could have told them for FREE that there was traffic, and that we needed an extra lane. Shoot, but if they have that kind of money to spend-- I could have offered to tell them that for 2 million- and retired... therefore- one less car on the road. :);

Question for VDOT or anyone here that may know the answer. The new road Tall Cedars- that is now open to Rt 50, WHY... OH WHY....is there only ONE turning lane to go EAST on 50 (HUGE BACK UP on tall cedars) and 2 lanes, that go WEST.... where you only see one or two cars at a time????? Was this part of the study that cost the tax payers 8 million? anyone out there agree?

I urge everyone to contact Chairman York and show your displeasure with the cost and time projections for widening Route 50. In his press release he seemed more than pleased that taxpayers are going to spend over 100 million bucks to pave less than 8 miles of road. And to only pave two miles per year. C'mon! Let him know that business as usual will no longer be accepted. Tax payer funded projects must be scrutinized and someone needs to be held accountable. Every dollar spent by a government employee should be treated as if it is coming from their wallet.

Today, not only was there a HUGE back-up, there was also a police car to catch anyone that goes into the left lane to pass the mile long line on the right- to then cut in. One unlucky person did just that.... only to have the police car go after them to pull them over. And yes, I was in the very line as I saw it happen.

I guess this was VDOTS answer.

So, we have all these backups in place. We have cops sitting around giving tickets to pump up revenue. We have politicians that announce this debacle on their website and display great pride in their announcement. We have VDOT, who could care less about citizen complaints and is happy just to have something to do. And, willing to venture that when one passes by the reason for the delays and backups, ten workers are standing around having a nice chat Yep, this is how government works! Are you feeling the pride in your government yet?

http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/northernvirginia/route_50_widening.asp

VDOT Cost:
The current cost of this project is estimated at $99.9 million:
$8.3 million for preliminary engineering
$24.5 million for right of way acquisition
$9.9 million for utility relocation
$57.2 million for construction

My Comment:
So 25% of the cost will go to property owners along the route.
The road is not only being widened, it is being 'reconstructed' that means repaving, releveling, etc.

From VDOT:
• Upgraded intersections
– New signals – Lengthened turn lanes – Pedestrian signals – Crosswalks with curb ramps
• Upgraded bridges
• Landscaping
• Storm-water management facilities

My Comment:
Sounds like a pretty reasonable bid for a complicated project that requires the road to be open for traffic as much as possible.

Upgraded bridges - ? its a tiny club creek.I would not even call it a bridge.
New signals – Lengthened turn lanes - They do this in weeks
Landscaping - can always be done along with construction.

Only the Storm-water management facilities is something new.

might b3 3.5 miles takes 1 and half years for that not 3 years

I think curious is either on the receiving end of contract money or has been drinking way too much guyana grape juice. The very last thing needed is another traffic light. For 100 million an exit should come from 28 and go directly to road where target and costco are located. The two traffic lights on route 50 west, just as 28 merges in, need to go. An over pass is needed at pleasant valley interchange. And an additional middle lane needs to be elevated that will carry express traffic from loudoun cty parkway to just past route 28. Only two exits placed to get off that road, and only used in rush hour Now, we are starting to get a 100 million bucks worth!

West Bound Route 50 was reduced to single Lane after the 28 bridge.
There was big backups today afternoon. Hopefully its back to 2 lanes during Rush hours.

They were putting up jeresy walls on had one lane closed. ( Right most lane closed)

Same thing today. Avoid 50 west during day time hours.
But I think they open 2 lanes during peak hours.

This is a classic scenario of tax dollars at work. 100 million bucks for very little improvement. Four years of sitting in traffic wasting time and gas. Police on the prowl to enhance revenue. The local politicians and VDOT have given you cause to glow with pride!

You can stop by the construction center right oPP to the pleaseant valley church and they will show you the design documents and the plan.

It has been over a month since announcement of project starting. So far, we have had the pleasure of seeing some barrels put in place. If it takes an entire month to put up some barrels, then the four year time line for completion must be seriously understated!

construction only on the west bound. And work also so far only in one segemnt fo the 3.5 miles of the west bound.
A really slow start.
Dont drive by 50 west in the noon times.big back up. They close it down to one lanes and you see 3 workers , working far away from the closed down lane.

They need to nuke 50 and start over. From 66 to 28, its a certified clusterfuck per FEMA.

A hundred million bucks for four years of work. One of the forty eight months has gone by already. So, we spent two million dollars to place twenty barrels on road and have three workers. This is what as known as being cost efficient with taxpayer money!

Unless your last name lacks the normal amount of vowels, or you are from a pacific rim country, would not recommend south riding.

Does anyone know when East Gate View Dr. will be finished? (the one that goes from Poland rd/tall cedars) I hope before 3 years- which hopefully will ease the traffic on 50 once its open. And- does anyone know if the 100 million is also paying for this road?

I believe that the current construction- (Pleasant Valley) are townhomes.... not businesses.... which really doesnt help our traffic situation. has anyone heard otherwise??

beofre this 3 year route 50 project is complete there will be more than 1500 townhouses built in South riding , East gate, Stone ridge and kir farms and more than 3000 more cars that the widening will be of no use like the beltway.

OK....and if they didn't do the work the houses would not be built? Of course they will. Growth is going to go on,that is life in this area. People bitch about the construction and also bitch if they do nothing to help solve the problem. That is life, deal with it.

The real key to the puzzle will be the completion of Tall Cedars Parkway from Stone Ridge through South Riding to 50. That will take a shitload of cars off 50 for about five miles.

Shouldn't take too much longer for Eastgate View Dr to be finished to Pleasant Valley Rd.

The developers are paying for much of that interior road work -- the whole plan was to take cars off 50.

An easier solution would be to throw a light up at Braddock and Pleasant Valley (where Cox Farms is). When they had a 4 way stop at the corner of Braddock and Gum Spring, it would get backed up just like Braddock and Pleasant Valley. The light they put up solved almost all of the problem and when they finished widening Gum Spring, it made it smooth sailing. If Braddock was a legit option - ie had a light instead of a 4 way stop, it would pull some cars off of 50 both during morning and afternoon rush.

Bob in SE Loudoun - The new stop sign on Tall Cedars, at Poland, makes Tall Cedars somewhat useless since you can sit at that intersection for 5 minutes some morning.

there is no construction work on saturdays and Sundays. You would think they would work on weekends when the traffic is low. But No.
a few reason why it takes 3 years for 3.5 miles.

Traffic is not low on weekends anywhere around here. No one stays home. It's not like rush hour, where a shit load of people are all driving at the same time, but it is heavier than mid day traffic during the week by a wide a margin. Plus, if they actually worked weekends you'd bitch about the higher cost since they'd be getting overtime pay for working then.

There's no will in Fairfax to push for it from VDOT. All that would do is allow more cars to enter Fairfax from Loudoun and pretty much do nothing for Fairfax residents. That's always what I've understood to be the reason why nothing is done to that intersection. Heck, I'd rather see a round-a-bout there than the current setup, but I don't see that happening either (for the same reason).

If you think that any local elected official has any control over what VDOT does or how they do it--think again.

They don't.

HA! I can tell you don't know too much about VDOT! Nearly *EVERYTHING* they do is politically driven!

Regarding the intersection of Braddock & Pleasant Valley Roads, VDOT did explore several alternatives at that site, including (1) keep the existing four-way stop, (2) install a signal with turn lanes, (3) install a signal w/o turn lanes, and (4) construct a roundabout.

- The signal w/o turn lanes didn't function any better than the existing condition, since one right or left turner would block the through movement of every car behind him.

- The signal with turn lanes would function well, but quite a bit of new right-of-way would be required.

- The option that functioned best with the least amount of new ROW was the roundabout. However it would have cost in excess of $8 million due to ROW costs, wetland impacts, and extensive off-site drainage improvements (all the way south to Elk Lick Run.) Also, the intersection is surrounded on three sides by property owned by the Fairfax County Park Authority, and they were not supportive of the project.

The bottom line turned out to be that the (substantial) funds would have had to come from Fairfax County's secondary road program, and Fairfax County was not motivated to make commuting into Fairfax easier for Loudoun County residents.

Getting close to two months now since work supposedly began. Anyone see any progress at all? If history has taught us anything, the four year timeline and dollar estimate will prove to be five years and 150 million. And, by the time 2017 rolls in, a thousand new homes will have been built. This supposed fix will be obsolete and VDOT will begin a new study to improve route 50.Why not turn the engineering study over to students at Virginia Tech as a home work assignment? Much less expensive and creative ideas may actually flow from those young minds.

I see that some work has been done.

If it takes 3 years for the entire 3.5 miles to be completed....they could complete a partial segment faster and allow the public to use it.

ALong 50 west , the first one mile from the Route 28 bridge to the chantilly auto park signal if complete will help.

Also from Poland road the last one mile if complete will help.

The mile strech near the club run might take a little work with the creek.

Well they had to cast the concrete for them first. For the price we're paying for this project, we can't have used jersey walls. Only top of the line shit on this project.
