Traveling to Ocean City, MD - hotel recommendations, travel advice

We're planning a family trip to OC,MD. We'll be traveling from Fairfax. Any advice on what time to leave/best route?
Also, any hotel recommendations or places to stay away from? We plan on going in a couple of weeks.

Are you looking to stay on the Boardwalk? Additionally, do you prefer oceanside or bayside for the hotel?
Did you want to be near the inlet where it's more developed (and more beautiful) or past 54 street where the beaches have ragweed growing out the sand?

OC Hilton or Holiday Inn Suites are the only two hotels I would set foot in. Be sure to check hotel reviews on TripAdvisor before you go.

Hilton and HI are medicare hotels. If you are old and douchie you may want to stay there. If you like to party and have fun try the Castle in the Sand. CIS is older but they have huge rooms right on the beach. Stay here because it is a wonderfull bit of americana.

Not sure about the place to stay, but be careful of the cops. They enjoy to stop out of state drivers and give them tickets. A friend of mine was driving normally, cop got on his butt and started tailgating, my bud eventually sped up to move out of the way in the other land and that's when the lights came on. Cop was a dick as well. So be very careful of those guys. Have fun out there thou! :-)

I've been going to OC for 35 years and while I can't tell you about any hotels in OC that have bed bugs, I can say that you should take them VERY seriously!
We got them once from a hotel in Wilkes Barre and you cannot get rid of them! We threw away thousands of dollars in bedding etc. including a brand new king size mattress. We ended up moving and had to wash every single piece of clothing and inspect everything before we moved it -- and we had a very minor infestation.
Whenever I check in to a hotel, the very FIRST thing I do is pull the sheets up and look around the mattress seams for signs of them. Luckily I have not found any in the hotels I have stayed in. We had one close call at the Carousel. I found stains on a mattress which resembled beg bug stains, but no bugs themselves. I went to the front desk and reported it, and I must say the clerk did not surprised. She moved me to another room, which after strict inspection was deemed "bug free".
I also always check Trip Advisor for reviews of the hotel. Many times travelers who encounter bugs will post it in their review.
Anyway, all travelers should check for bed bugs when checking in to a hotle. And note that they are not just in cheap motels. Many luxury hotels experience problems with them as well. They are not like roaches which are attracted to food and unclean conditions. They just want people!
Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope it helps.
I am no bed bug expert...but I did see 20/20 when they did a report on what to look for when staying places. You should always check out not only the mattress seams but also the back of the bed frame and wall behind it. Look for any dark spots or of course the bugs themselves. They also said you should travel with dryer sheets in your luggage. Something in the sheets repels them. And just a side note....this must work. My daughter went to Mexico this past winter with friends and she slept with the dryer sheets in the legs of her PJs for safety sake. In the morning two of her friends were bit up....she didnt have a bite on her. After going to the management on this they were moved to another room. I never leave home without the sheets!! If anyone else knows any other deterants I would like to know. THANKS!

I know this thread is old, but I decided to share my experience. I haven't been to Ocean City, but I like traveling, so I look for the hotels from time to time. I was lucky to find a good collection of hotel booking sites on https://travelsites.com/booking-sites/. I should say, they really help me to find the best deals and offers. Hopefully, this source will be helpful for someone else.

Skip OC and go straight to Delaware. Hotter women, fewer tattoos, fewer bed bugs, nicer houses to rent. All in all way better.

The Residence in ocean city, md is my hotel of choice. I have stayed there a few times, and each visit is better than the last. The staff are very welcoming and make the check-in process smooth. The private beach is perfect, the water is warm and pearly. And you can dive there freely, cause it's secure and beautiful. I took with me swimming goggles with nose cover and was happy as a child. If you want to buy one, look at the link I attached, there you can read the reviews and choose the perfect goggles for u.

Ocean City is a total shit-hole now. Lot's of white trash and other undesirables.
I would recommend the Delaware Beaches. They are cleaner and safer and it's only 20 minutes away. Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach are beautiful.
You could still visit OC for an afternoon, but then you would need to take an extra shower to wash off the filth.
