Old photos of Chantilly?
Posted by: T ()
Date: September 09, 2011 06:36PM

I'm looking for old photos of Chantilly, especially along Rte. 50 between Jermantown Road and about Rte. 28.; Stringfellow Road between Rte. 50 and Rte. 29; the Fair Lakes Parkway area; and the Greenbriar subdivision and farmland that was there before it was developed in the late 1960s. By old, I really mean older than about 5 years old because I'm mostly interested in illustrating changes to this area over time.

Of course, if you have any, feel free to post them here, along with the location and date. But also, if you know of any websites that have pictures like this, please post.

Thanks.

Might check the chantilly library or even more likely the library in Fairfax City and the Fairfax County photographic archives

It's bird's eye view, but Google Earth has a historical imagery feature. Just look for the location you want and click on a date in the bottom of the screen. A slider will appear that shows you what dates are available. The area you mentioned only goes back to around 1989/1990 so I don't know how useful that'll be.

There is a book called Voices of Chantilly that is sold at the Chantilly Library. Chantilly used to be dairy land - the book interviews original families and has maps/photos.

Check GMU Archives;

http://sca.gmu.edu/

They have tons of scanned pics (online!) from the area dating back 100 years. Theres plenty more if you are willing to go in and do research with the hard copies.

The Bull Run Grill was owned by a groundskeeper at arlington cemetary. As far as I know it was a colored people only kind of place. On weekends there would sometimes be 200 or more black folks partying there. I seem to remember a couple of shootings took place there in the late 70's or early 80's.

Naked Truth:

Re: "Wasn't there always police at the Bull Run Grill? I heard it was a heroine hangout."

Correction: the subject (police) is plural here, so it's: "Weren't there always police..."

Correction: "heroin"

So that's a C-.

But your use of simple punctuation and capitalization is good. Keep working at it and you'll be operating at GED level before you know it!

Actually, heroines used to hang out at the Bull Run Grill...Wonder woman used to get all kinds of messed up on orange drank and purple drank. Then she'd do some freaky shit with her lasso.

Crazy times...

HistoricAerials.com will give you aerial photos over the years of many locations in North America, including Chantilly. If you look at the 1979 image of Dulles Airport, you'll find a Concorde parked out on the tarmac.
