I have not found any in northern va for years now. I have a cottage at lake anna and there are several places there that sell it. I bring back a couple 5gal. cans for my old 1985 ford pick-up every time im down there.

Yeah, I too am forced to hit up marinas around Lake Anna for ethanol free. Thankfully I have a summer home so it's not TOO far out of the way. Race tracks (Summit Point, Virginia International Raceway, Budds Creek, etc, etc) have ethanol free pumps as well, albeit not in Fairfax or otherwise especially convenient.

Some fuel vendors will ship or deliver 5gal pails... I'm only familiar with this with racing, so I suspect only speciality (expensive) fuels will be available vs. ye-old eth free pump gas.

First, good on OP for having the foresight to prevent engine trouble from ethanol. Just because a device can stand E-10 doesn't mean that it will last as long as it could with E-0.

The ethanol-free market is geared toward people with farm equipment that have smaller engines, therefore it follows that most of the stations are in rural areas. As NoVA is more or less a concrete jungle, they happen to be scarce as hen's teeth.

In Virginia, gas stations are required to put on the pumps that the petrol contains up to 10% ethanol. If there is no label, ask the attendant just to be sure.

So fuel price per unit volume remains constant while energy per unit volume decreases. Also because bioethanol, produced from agricultural feedstocks, is perceived to be a viable renewable energy source in the U.S. (even though all productions of scale directly and invariably increase food prices), and by reducing foreign energy imports National economic security is purportedly reinforced.

Because Midwestern senators need re-election and the agribusiness lobby has money.

I will not be buffaloed into putting something damaging into my auto, even if I must open my own ethanol-free station.

No, I meant I'm not buying that it's a viable renewable energy source. I am More Complete. However, that is irrelevant.

You nailed it. We used to have a chemical called MTBE which along with ethanol was an oxygenate which was used to cutdown on pollution in the summer months. The corn lobby got MTBE banned after there were some leaks into water sources even though ethanol is not safer at all. Then they got the regs passed to require ethanol year round.

The reason you can get ethanol-free gas at marinas is because ethanol in boats makes the engines run hotter, increasing the risk of fire.

Took a trip from Virginia to Nebraska, ran cruise control all the way, used mid-grade [89 octane], got 22~23 when we started.

{NO marina could I find in 150 miles from Fairfax, Va. sells non ethanol}

On the way out we got to non-ethanol stations, still used 89 octane & cruise control, and mileage increased to 30~32 mpg.

On the way out and back we also noticed that you could hear the engine running smoother, with better pickup, on non-ethanol fuel.

Coming back, as soon as we got to ethanol blend, engine lost noticable acceleration, ran rougher, and mileage decreased again.

YOU WANT TO STOP ETHANOL BLEND? First, write letters to your reps in DC, AND in your states. Cite FACTS of mileage and handling. Call after writing letters. Send letters to EVERY Senator and Congressman, federal AND state. And, if you have the wherewithal, do NOT go to gas stations that sell only ethanol blend, and buy only non-ethanol gas... I drive 25 miles to fill up my car with non-ethanol and as many gas cans as I can cram into the car as I can.

Your numbers sound like bullshit. I travel to Front Royal for work several times a week and ethanol free gas is available there. I tried about 4 or 5 tanks in my Toyota 4runner and only experienced a 2 mpg increase and no increase in performance. It is totally not worth the extra cost.

No. The reason marina gas is ethanol-free is because most boats are stored with gas in the tanks and only ethanol-free will not break down and lose its combustability.

Recently I was getting gas at B.J.'S Wholesale Club in Fair Lakes and I didn't see any sticker on the pump that says the gas contains "10 percent ethanol", like all the pumps at other gas stations. Made me wonder if it's ethanol free or they just didn't put the stickers on the gas pumps.

They just didn't put stickers on the pumps. Far as I know all gas is E-10 unless marked otherwise.

The closest place E-0 gas is currently available is in Marshall. And E-0 gas does go bad, just not as fast (or so I understand).

As to whether it makes much difference, it seems to for me. But I primarily use it my yard equipment and my antique, small-engined classic. Thing has less power than my lawn mower so it seems to add a bit of umph.

Why do we continue to refer to regular gas as unleaded? Lead was phased out of gas from the early 80s until it was completely banned in 1996.

And why do they still price gas at 9/10th's of a cent at the end? They need to round that shit off.

It is not 9/10th of a cent, but rather 9 mils. This is the smallest unit of U.S. money - The dollar being the largest. This unit of measure was introduced 1796.

ethanol is great for heat engines; the carnot, the boiler (if safely)

not for detonation/motion engines such as the stroking piston engine

it has too much lost heat and "not much go", so probably may as well be electric

Yes. I was at the wawa in Fredricksburg last week and using Desiel as I do, I'm always looking for a green handle. I noticed a blue one and low and behold, ethanol free gas. I repair small engine's and ethanol causes more than a few problems trust me. I know Fredricksburg is a hike, but I'm going to assume that wawa is doing this at other stores. I don't know where they may be in northern Virginia, but at least it's being done. Good luck.

The closest one I know for certain is the Exxon at 8437 W Main St, in Marshall. There's supposed to be another in Remington but I hear they only sell in bottles and possibly that they don't even sell E0 anymore. The place in Marshall has a regular gas pump (it's the one in the back) and was still there as of two weeks ago, and has been there for at least a year or two.

It's crazy what we've become. All the stations in our area put 10 percent in ... what a waste ..

It's costs way too much to produce ethanol for gas -- the only way it works is that it is subsidized by the government via out tax payer dollars.

"Skeptics cite the research of Cornell University professor David Pimentel, who estimates that it takes approximately 1.3 gal. of oil to produce a single gallon of ethanol.

If the benefits are in doubt, the costs are not. It would take 450 pounds of corn to yield enough ethanol to fill the tank of an SUV. Producing enough ethanol to replace America's imported oil alone would require putting nearly 900 million acres under cultivation—or roughly 95 percent of the active farmland in the country. Once we've turned our farms into filling stations, where will the food come from?"

Another problem not being discussed is the cost of food due to this policy. I raise all sorts of livestock. My feed prices have gone up 50% in five years. Do you realize how many products in the grocery store and restaurants contain corn? Ethanol is driving the price of food up substantially. Add that to the fact that if all available farm land in the US was diverted into production of corn for ethanol, it would not even provide half of the gas we use daily just for automobile"s. Seams to me that we need to reexamine and rethink this government mandated policy.

you only need a nation wide fleet of carriers to distribute ethanol to home depot and lowes to sell the stuff for winter heat

shouldn't be too expensive right?

another choice is to recycle all boilers in all public schools and fit them with ones that use ethanol

BOTH ARE REAL EASY!

Here's a trick you can try to remove the ethanol. Put the gasoline in an approved container and let it stand for 10 minutes. The ethanol will rise to the top. Then, use a match or lighter to burn off the top inch or so.

You're welcome.
