Where is the place to go in Fairfax County to sell gold jewelry? I have a few bracelets (over 1 oz. each) that I want to sell for scrap and want to avoid getting ripped off.

Thank you!

You will probably feel like you are getting ripped off regardless of where you go for three reasons. First the price that you paid for the jewelry was probably much higher than the cost of the metals and jewels used to make up the items. Since the purchaser is buying the raw materials you are only going to get a fraction of what you paid. Second the purchaser is going to want to turn a profit when he resells the stuff and he or his purchaser is probably going to incur costs in converting the items to base metals, which will be factored into the cost that they are paying you. Result is that you aren't even going to get the value of the raw materials. Remember that these guys are buying scrap gold because there is money to be made in it. If they didn't see big profits they'd be doing something else. Third, many feel that the gold rush is past and that prices will be dropping. Since gold purchasers can't rely on inflation to cover their mistakes they will likely err on the side of underpricing the items.

I would suggest that before deciding to sell the items to scrap dealers you might want to explore selling them to or through jewelers who deal in used jewelry. It is possible they may be worth considerably more as bracelets than they are as scrap. If you are committed to selling the items for scrap simply take them to two or three unrelated places and see what they will offer you.

Go to a bunch of places. Strangely, the jewlery stores that have we buy gold signs usually aren't as good a deal as one of the fly by night shops and places that set up shop in hotels for the day.

I had an 18k wedding ring that was sitting around 5 years after my divorce. I took it to a couple of places, and even though the jewlery stores were going to melt it down themselves and reuse it, they gave me the worst price quotes. The unlabeled gold buying shop in chantilly past 28 by Sully's and the trailer park gave me the best price, even though he was insisting that it was 14k gold. I know it was 18, but what the hell, he gave me more than anywhere else did, so who cares.

I would assume he actually tested it (like 5 different ways (*)) and knew exactly what it was. When it was bought for you/by you was it similarly tested?

(*) For example, weight and volume (thanks, Archimedes!)...or electrical resistance...or maybe even chemical reaction

If you had swapped your jewelry for twinkies, you would be on easy street by now. If not, call me.

Ed, my friend, I AM Parker Schnabel. And besides, I'm not exactly friends with Fred anymore after that bullshit he pulled with the electrical panel I wanted to buy/ borrow. I've got something in the works to get back at him though.
