I have a lot of respect for these guys and for all military personnel. However, guarding this tomb seems like a colossal waste of time. Can you imagine doing that shit in winter?

If you REALLY have respect for the military, you wouldn't question this level of commitment.

Is it an honor for them to guard the tomb?

Knowing that weather can be harsh at times (snowmageddon, etc), I wonder if some would consider it a punishment.

Someone needs to create in idiot app for moments like oy vey above. Just because these dedicated men and women have earned the right for you to say whatever crosses thru your brain, doesn't mean you actually have to share it. Why do people go to funerals. It's for the living to honor and remember the dead. Does that help? Even a little bit?

TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER

Interesting facts about the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Sentinels of the Third United States Infantry Regiment "Old Guard"

Q: How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?

A: 21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.

Q: How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?

A: 21 seconds, for the same reason as answer number 1.

Q: Why are his gloves wet?

A: His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.

Q: Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time, and if not, why not?

A: No, he carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

Q: How often are the guards changed?

A: Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

Q: What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

A: For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30".

Other requirements of the Guard:

They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. They cannot swear in public FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way.

After TWO YEARS, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin.

The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.

The first SIX MONTHS of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV. All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred. Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame. Every guard spends FIVE HOURS A DAY getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.

The honor of guarding The Tomb Of the Unknown is the greatest. Walking in winter, summer, rain, hail, snow or what ever, these are the Professional of the Enlisted. I would have been Honored to have walked that post during my 27 Years in the Army and weather would never be a deterrent. I Salute the Members of The Old Guard.

also, its kinda cool to see...if you havent been by, i highly suggest its one thing you do to check off your DC sightseeing list :)

the guys kinda glide when they walk. almost like Michael Jackson

There are now 600 offically badged Tomb Guards. Many people wash out and never get the chance to wear the Tomb Guard badge. Their waist size cannot exceed 28 inches and their uniform is never, ever out of place. The Guards do a 24 hour watch over three shifts, of these the B shift, which covers the bulk of the day when tourists are present, are the sharpest looking of the bunch. At night the changing of the Guard is done after an hour and with less ceremony as a regular Guard change. The Tomb Guard badge and the Astronaut badge are the two hardest badges to obtain in the Army. You can have your Tomb guard badge revoked even after you have left the service. The wall of badges in their office space below the Tomb has a number of "revoked" spots on it because people went out and disgraced themselves, and the badge.

Even though their weapons are not loaded, they are still entrusted to guard the tomb and will do so with physical force, if necessary. Nearly once a day Guards engage with people who decide it is ok to step over the fence to get a better picture, or are just stupid and want to test the Guard. This engagement usually involves the Guad stopping, coming to "port arms" and demanding the individual step back over the fence.

i remember reading something about their training and lifestyle. it is a 6 month assignment, and is considered a honor to do so. during that six months, they are not allowed to talk either. they are the most diciplined soldiers in the army, or any of the armed forces, not to take credit away from the silent drills teams.

I have spent time down in their quarters under the Tomb and believe me, they talk to each other all the time. They are constantly drilled on the details of the cemetery and are helping their fellow Guards get dressed over and over again.

Competition to guard the tomb is fierce. And all are volunteers.
