Anyone remember Shakey's?
Posted by: Hollywood ()
Date: August 19, 2011 06:47AM

Does anyone remember Shakey's Pizza place in Annadale off Little River Tpke
? They used to have karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights. That's where I learned to sing (semi-professionally). You'd go there for beer, the buffet, and practice singing.

Loved Shakeys. Now it is some crapy place called McGills(?). I think they microwave Totinos pizzas and dried up pasta and feed it to all the Korean tourist buses that roll into town.

I think Mike McGill use to be part owner of some of the Shakeys in the area.
We use to go to Shakeys in Annandale on Saturday nights and hang out and drink pitchers of beer and eat the buffet.

Didn't there used to be one in Tysons near that steakhouse? Vague memories of end of soccer season lunch there. I think it had a big window where you got to watch them making your pizza and spitting in your food.

Sure do! That's where I had my fist "bar beers", at the tender age of 14. A buddy of mine worked next door at the cafeteria ( I've long since forgotten it's name ) and made nice with the Shakey's doorman/bouncer.....Friday nights we'd pile up there and knock pitchers of suds, all of us were from 14, me, to 17 years old.

Ahhh, the good old days, when DWIs were fine and under age drinking in an establishment was encouraged!

Your post brought back a memory of the Rt 1 Shakey's. I was with a group there late on a Sat nite. We had been there several hours drinking. There was an Asian girl working there and a member of my group was using racial slurs towards her. Just his luck that the girl's boyfriend / husband was there. Big dude too....looked military. I don't recall all the details but we all ended up out in the parking lot where the big dude kicked his a**. Another of the group got in the middle of it and got his a** semi-kicked. Call me a wimp or call me smart but no way was I messing with that dude.....

I seem to remember a friend of mine getting into a fight with a guy at the Shakey's in Tyson's one time. Apparently this guy got drunk off of beer there and was physically/emotionally abusing his wife. My friend actually called out this guy to fight him in the parking lot. Sadly, my friend wasn't very coordinated or a good fighter (very nerdy). Lost the fight to that drunk, but did help out that girl.

We went to the "Bunch a Lunch" thing on the last day of school when I was going to Sidney Lanier Intermediate School. I think it was like 2 or3 bucks for all you can eat.

Can you imagine how much pizza a couple hundred 7th and 8th grades can eat?

I am not positive, but am pretty sure that the potato wedges were batter-dipped and then fried. They were friggin' great.

They were, however, one of those cheap items that Shakey's would hope that you would fill up on so as to not eat as much of the relatively more expensive pizzas.

I really wish that there were still one within an hour or two of FFX County. I would be a regular.

The place where the Shakey's used to be on Riggs Rd. and University Blvd in MD still has a pizza joint there. It's called 3 Brothers. There's some flower store in the other part of what used to be the Shakey's and there's a chinky plexiglass carryout in the last part. They put 3 businesses where there used to be 1. But you can still get pizza there. The 3 Bros. franchises aren't as good as the original, but it's better than Shakey's was (I know, that AIN'T sayin' much).

That's because you people down here don't know what good pizza is. You people think paint & rubber on cardboard is good pizza. You people think Velveeta and Catsup or Hunt's on Krispy Krackers is good pizza. You people order a pepperoni pizza and are happy if there are 5 microscopic slices of pepperoni on it.

Shakey's literally used to paint what it alleged to be tomato sauce on the so-called "dough". The only good thing you can say about them is they weren't stingy with the toppings, like most pizza joints are here.

Dang, the closest Shakey's Pizza Parlour is in Palm Springs, CA. A must do for the next family vacation. It even has the Shakey's All-You-Can-Eat Power Brunch:

"Experience all-you-can-eat bliss as we serve up an unlimited variety of hot and fresh pizza, golden fried chicken, crispy Mojo Potatoes, pastas, salads, and sides – all for one ridiculously low price. Served 11-2 at participating locations. Items may vary by location."

I wonder if the servers still wear the pin stripe Victorian costumes with the styrofoam straw hats.

Even back when all they sold was pizza and beer with the red striped piano players in the straw hats , tables all set up the long way forming tables about 15 feet or more long. It was a decent place and lots of good times

I went to that one on Rt 1 it was decades ago I went to the Annandale Fairfax and Tysons ones and miss them all 25 years years back I had to choose Shakeys or Horn and Horn Buffet in Annandale . Horn and Horn was a original NYC cafe that sold things in the Automats where you put a dime or a quarter in the slot and opened the door to get what you wanted

Those 50 NYC Automat were owned by Horn & Hardart

This is Horn and Horn it was started as a Bawlmer MURDERLAND place that had AYCE cafes in Virginia and MURDERLAND on next to the Shakys in Annandale . Their fried chicken was super good , crispy done and salty but good . Hell NO They did not have one at the old BLOCK where Blaze Star was not some kind of way to blow weed , she was a lady RIP Old girl

NO they did not sell fried squid back then. I liked Mike McGills place too after Shakeys was gone he ran that Shakeys had the same pizza It was good with a pitcher of cold beer so dont start bitchen

Remember the Shakes’s on Route 1 very well. Drank a lot of beer with high school friends there. Also my brother worked there during the mid 1970’s.

Most likely, watching videos of lectures is the most effective and practical approach to learn new material. If there are subtitles, you can read them in addition to listening to an explanation while watching a video sequence (for a multilingual audience, you can also employ a video translation). The video allows for the usage of every technique.

When I was in HS I used to go to the 1 on Riggs Rd. & University Blvd. across from the World Renowned Tick Tock Liquor Store. Near Adelphi,MD.

If you asked for regular beer, you got carded. If you asked for dark beer you didn't ( the menu called it "Old World Black Beer" but if you asked for it like that, you got carded, too) .

All the white trash drunks who'd gotten barred from Jimmy Comer's across Riggs Rd. used to drink there. If you consider you had to do something real bad to get barred from Jimmy Comer's, you'll see Shakey's let ANYBODY drink there.

It's all gone now. University Blvd. is now Mexiland. The Shakey's got cut up into a flower shop & a 3 Brothers. 3 Bros. is better than Shakey's was but 3 Bros. was better before it turned into a franchised chain & there only was 1 @ Beltway Plaza. The current 3 Bros. there is run by Mexicans & it's OK. I don't live that way no more so I don't get there allot.

The original Leo's moved to Coll. Pk. & franchising. There's actually a noticeable difference between franchise Leo's & the original. The original divorced the franchised years ago. The Leone's pizza joint is totally gone. Both places had their partisans. There really wasn't allot of diff. between the 2 pizzas. Tick Tock went out of business. UNBELIEVABLE! That joint was a license to print money. I can't believe somebody didn't make money there & had to close it. Sad.
