I-66E to Close Friday for 9/11 Tribute
Over 1,800 motorcyclists will ride from Pa. to the Pentagon and World Trade Center to pay tribute.
By Whitney Rhodes

Virginia State Police warn motorists in the area to avoid the Dulles Toll Road and Interstate 66 Friday evening to make way for a mass of motorcycles paying tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

Police plan to block eastbound traffic on I-66 from the Capital Beltway to Route 110 southbound. No traffic will be allowed to access the on-ramps to I-66 eastbound between Fairfax and Arlington counties.

Over 1,800 motorcycles are expected to ride from Somerset, Pa. to the Pentagon and finally the World Trade Center over a four-day period as part of this year's America's 9/11 Foundation tribute event.

The riders will start coming into Loudoun County from Maryland at around 2 p.m. Friday. They will go pass by Leesburg and take the Dulles Greenway to the toll road, then ride along I-66 into Arlington.

Here's a breakdown of where the procession will pass through on Friday, courtesy of state police.

Loudoun County/Town of Leesburg

The riders are expected to enter Loudoun County from Maryland between 2 and 4 p.m.
Loudoun County Sheriff and state police will stop traffic at intersections on Route 15 from the Maryland state line to the Leesburg town line. Traffic from roads on the east side of Route 15 will be able to travel north. All traffic wishing to go south must find an alternate route or experience major delays.
Suggested detour: Take Route 15N into Maryland, then take Route 340 west toward Brunswick, to Route 17 south through Brunswick, to Route 287 into Loudoun County.

Also expect significant traffic delays in and around Leesburg.
The ride will come south on Route 15/Business (King Street) into Leesburg, continuing southbound through the Historic Downtown.
Click here http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=3858 for a map and more info.

Dulles Greenway

The procession continues onto the Route 15/7 Bypass east to the Dulles Greenway.
Access from the Bypass to the Dulles Greenway will be closed to traffic.
Once on the Greenway, riders will remain in the far left lane. General vehicle traffic will remain in the far right lane. Traffic cones will be set up to separate the riders from general eastbound traffic as they ride the entire length of the Greenway and proceed through the Greenway Toll Plaza.

Dulles Toll Road

Intersections along the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) and Dulles Access Road will be controlled by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police.
Riders will remain in the far left lane in the eastbound lanes of the Dulles Toll Road.
Heavy traffic congestion and significant delays are expected for drivers traveling to and from the airport.

Interstate 66

The riders will exit the Dulles Toll Road, proceed onto the Connector Road and enter I-66.
Eastbound lanes will be closed to traffic from the Capital Beltway to Route 110 southbound. No traffic will be allowed to access the on-ramps to I-66 eastbound between Fairfax and Arlington counties.
Heavy traffic congestion and delays are expected on I-66 and I-495.
Suggested detour: Travelers headed to the District should take I-495 north to the George Washington Memorial Parkway or I-495 south to Route 50 east (Arlington Blvd).
Once the riders reach Route 110 in Arlington, the Arlington County Police Department, Virginia State Police and partnering law enforcement agencies will escort the motorcycles into Crystal City.

This is crazy!!! The police should not be closing roads during a Friday rush hour for these morons! If they want to ride to DC on a Friday, let them sit in stopped traffic like we do every frigging day. No, the police are going to close the roads to us so they can breeze through with no stops while we sit in a 2 hour backup. Don't get me wrong, it is a great cause they are riding for but you can't shut down a whole city for your fundraiser! The police have control over this. They can tell the riders they are not going to close the roads. You should call all your elected officials and tell them that leadership calls for them to stop this insanity. They control the police.

I've got a life. I like my life. I don't like toothless inbreds on crotch rockets deciding that the best way to commemorate a tragedy is to go for a freakin' bike ride on major highways, during rush hours, almost a full MONTH before the anniversary of the tragedy, particularly when the organizer of the "bike rally" is making money on the deal.

So fuck off.

Nope, just an ordinary God-fearin' patriotic American who can READ A FREAKING CALENDAR, and knows that there's no logical connection between a bunch of goobers on motorcycles going on a long ride in AUGUST, and something awful that happened ten years ago in SEPTEMBER.

Complain to your supervisors.

What the heck were the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority and our police thinking when they authorized this to use our tax dollars and hit our economy? Why are we contributing so much to MWAA for the Metro and Toll Road when MWAA and our police will now have to devote all their resources to turning our roads over to all these motorcyclists (most from out of town)?

Someone should be held to account for this!

MWAA noted the following:

We did not authorize this event but we do share your concerns about the impact this will have on traffic. That is why Airports Authority Police are working with the six other law enforcement agencies under the leadership of the Virginia State Police to ensure the safety of the traveling public and attempt to minimize traffic congestion and delays during this even which will affect many roads in addition to our own.

Someone in authority in this area must have coordinated this with the "charity." Is it the Virginia State Police? Or do they bribe the law enforcement community with their "donations" to first responders?

I thought this was some kind of hoax at first. This is insane.

1) Why did the bikers schedule this for FRIDAY AUGUST 19? Did they have a scheduling conflict on Sept. 11? Was the weekend booked?
2) Who the fuck decided to close 66? This will completely paralyze NoVA

I'm sure some government fuckwad thought "This is a 9/11 tribute. If I don't bend over backwards to help out, I'm not a true American". Fucking tired of patriotism becoming an excuse for being retarded.

Lessee, $180K per year over 9 years -- $20K a year ain't much to show for such a large organization. And it will probably suck far more than that from our economy!

---------------

Sjurseth said the view of the "mass of people" driving through King Street will be an impressive sight for all to see and encourages residents to come downtown as spectators. Even the Guinness Book of World Records was contacted to see if the ride's large participation would qualify for a new world record, although the 9/11 ride cannot compete because of certain restrictions.

The foundation president has long emphasized that the goal of the group is not to "irritate people" but instead to shed light on the reasons behind the annual event.

"We do this to raise funds for first responders. It's a charity, not an event to tie up traffic. It's an event to honor those who perished and raise funds," he said, noting that since its inception $180,000 has been raised for scholarships. "Our goal is to raise a lot more money [this year] than we've raised in the past."

Seriously. This whole thing is a big ego stroke for the guys running the foundation. The goal may not be to tie up traffic, but that is the biggest and most significant consequence.

They've donated $180,000 in the 10 years they've been around... I'm sure more than that will be lost in productivity and fuel while people sit in their cars idling engines or call out of work.

$180K in *NINE* years? I'm involved with a charity; one of our fundraisers is doing "garage sales" twice a year. People donate stuff; we sell it on one day in a shopping center parking lot; real simple. All you have to do is store the donated items, and transport them on sale day. We have NEVER done less than $5K a year on the garage sales, and we generally do closer to $10K. We don't block traffic; we don't bother anybody.

Seriously? A big honkin' deal like this has raised $20K a year, on average?

Just got my 2 cents in, police say it was a safety issue. I said what safety, it's a parking lot

From the website:

So far the foundation has presented scholarships to more than 70 children of First Responders totaling $180,000. The foundation has donated additionally more than $250,000. to First Responders Departments and their families. This year 15 - $2,000 college scholarships will be awarded to family members of active/disabled First Responders. General Donations can be directly made to this fund. The foundation has presented 10 brand new police Harley-Davidson Motorcycles to escorting departments.

70 scholarships -$180K
other donations -$250K
15 scholarships -$30K
10 brand new police Harley-Davidson Motorcycles -$160K?
-Loudon and Fairfax each got one (which might explain why they'll shut down 66 on a Friday)

So according to this they have donated about $620K

they charge each rider $120ea x 1800 riders = $216K per year (just from the riders)
Not sure how much they get from other sponsorship

They have been registered since 2003, so thats roughly 8 years of riding, maybe pulling in something like $1M to $2M over that time. That balance sheet doesn't seem to add up. Maybe there is a lot of "overhead".

I am a WTC First Responder now living in Arlington VA. I fully understand the inconvenience this is causing to all who live here. And the inconvenience of motorcades. And the inconvenience of events that get in the way of everyday life here. Unfortunately it's a part of living in our Nation's Capital. (Living in NYC was not much different. Different details, same inconvenience.)

These bikers are not a bunch of yahoos. These are people who are dedicated to supporting First Responders. They have done so since September 11, 2001. They are brave and generous people and we are very grateful for their support. As even our own government is turning their back on many of the health issues and other issues facing First Responders - people who gave selflessly because there was a need - it is commendable to find people who never forget us.

As to the choice of date, I am guessing it is chosen because access to these sites on/near 9/11 may not be possible. In NYC, for example, we are being shut out of any access to the site because the President will be there. I assure you that on that day, all First Responders, and those who support us, will be honoring those who perished and those who served in a meaningful way.

There are a number of groups that have sprung up with the initiative to make 9/11 a national day of service. You can even go online and dedicate your service to someone lost on that day. I encourage you to do so.

Ha. What a joke and bullshit response. The issue isn't coordination. It's easy to shut down a road and let a certain group pass. The point is closing a major road during rush hour and what will happen.

Found another article:

The eastbound Dulles Connector Road leading to eastbound Interstate 66 will be CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC except the motorcycle procession. This closure will also extend to taxis, commuter buses and Washington Flyer Coach Service.

Here are the specific impacts for traffic using Dulles Airport:
Westbound lanes on the Dulles Toll Road and the Dulles Airport Access Highway will remain open for motorists heading towards Dulles Airport. All ramps along the route will be open except for the ramp from northbound Route 28 to Dulles. A detour will be posted directing Route 28 traffic to the next exit (Route 606) then back to the airport.
The eastbound Dulles Greenway ramp to Dulles Airport will remain open.
All traffic exiting Dulles Airport will have two options:
1) Bear left to follow the eastbound Dulles Airport Access Highway to Route 7 in Tysons Corner. No other exits from the Access Highway, including I-495 and I-66 will be available from this route.
2) Bear right to Access the Dulles Greenway westbound, or Route 28 north or south.
Traffic leaving Dulles Airport for Maryland, Washington, DC or any point along the Toll Road will need to select an alternate route based on the options above.

Didn't think of that. So now you're also messing around with airport traffic.

Someone needs to pull their Form 990. They spend 48.2% of their income on administering their "charity". Problematic indeed.

"The AFR represents the percentage of dollars spent on administering

How do they decide which first responders get bribes, oops, donations? You'd think its those impacted by the 9/11 events, but according to their website, it includes Trumbull CT, the University of Pittsburgh (seriously), Portland MN, and that patriotic city of Ontario (yes, Canada):

Messing with airport traffic, indeed. I've got to drive BWI in Baltimore on Saturday morning to drop off some relatives for an 11:30 am flight. The only two feasible ways to get there are I-95 and the BW Parkway...both of which are going to be experiencing "major delays" during the exact time we need to be on the road.

I can tell you that if the commuters in this area had to experience this sort of major inconvenience due to a snow event, VDOT and MSHA would catch holy hell, but somehow everything is A-OK if it's a contrived, man made event.

If any of you had lost someone on that tragic day you wouldn't be complaining - think of how offensive some of your comments are before you post them. It's one day, at least you're alive to live it.

To sane, intelligent people, this means a lot and they're willing to take a day off, or suck it up and leave early for or from work. Of course it sets everyones commutes off, including mine, and it would be nice if it was on a weekend, or even closer to Sept 11, but it's not, and you're rude, heartless comments aren't going to change anything. Also if any of you had half of a brain, you would realize it's not the easiest thing to get near the locations of the terrorist attacks the same week of the damn terrorist attacks. There are hundreds of commemoration and memorial events happening the weeks up to and even after Sept. 11. Did any of you research anything about the event? They're riding to all three locations, so boo hoo you're not the only ones affected, and it took a hell of a lot to coordinate 2,000 motorcyclists to ride through the states during a 3-day period.

Those of you who are immature, need to be treated as such. So here you go, because apparently this never stuck with you - "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all." Assholes.

And to the guy who wrote the comment below - go to hell. Just because you have no happiness in your life doesn't mean you have to wish death on other people, especially those commemorating this tragic event. You literally need some mental help because somethings not right up there, or probably anywhere else when it comes to you. I would hate, absolutely hate, to know someone like you, and I only hope the people in your life are lucky enough to get away from you. With thoughts like this, no doubt you will perish sad and alone and no one will care or ever think twice about the person you never were.

Except it isn't whining, it's a legitimate beef. Calling it whining is tantamount to saying that these selfish morons have a right to disrupt afternoon rush hour for the entire metro region....they don't.

Some poor commuter who's worked hard all week will have to sit in far worse traffic when all they want to do is get home and see their family because of these selfish morons.

9/11 is a Sunday this year...they could have done it then. 8/19 for a 9/11 memorial ride? And what do motorcycles have to do with the 9/11 tragedy anyway? Plus, this "charity" uses 48% of its donations for 'administration'.

I smell a rat. Someone needs to be kicked in the head for this.

So, pal, it's your position that pretty much anything is OK as long as you're doing it in the name of 9/11. No inconvenience for others too great; no act of lunacy too irritating for the rest of the world. Doesn't it bother you that somebody's making money off this little shindig? Doesn't it bother just a little that they've got a crappy rating for the amount of money they spend on "administrative" expenses. It's a scam; you've bought into it.

Thank you to the riders and supporters - I will not only never forget watching the smoke rise from the Pentagon or the scenes from NYC or PA, but, I wish we had even a fraction of the cohesiveness, respect and unity today that our Country experienced after those events. These "riders" really are a funny crowd.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: "riding" is all about getting attention. And events like this prove it -- clogging up major highways under the guise of "honoring" 9/11 victims.

These apes will bumble along at the slowest speed they can get away with to drag this out as long as possible. There's no such thing as negative attention to them. Any attention is good attention.

It's a good lesson for you parents out there: give your kids plenty of attention. If you neglect them, they'll end up being "riders" as adults.

Anyone supporting this can fuck off. And is $20k per year the price to pay for the VA state police to block off interstates for me?

Why are they blocking I-66 at the beltway starting at noon? The biker route is from the Dulles access exit, why block Route 7 off? Close it just before the fake patriots get on the highway, not miles before it.

Yeah, there's nothing more unifying than tying up a major highway during rush hour, keeping people from from getting home to their families, so a bunch of bikers can drive slowly so they feel important. Yup, that's real unifying -- pissing people off. I'm planning on cutting a huge fart about 3:30 p.m. in honor of the bikers; that's my personal tribute to them.

Spike strips and nails, while I'm not advocating for them, could be a huge deterrent. What biker will drive down 66 knowing those things are on the road. It would be instant flat tire and probable death.

Once again not suggesting this should be done

Yes. Of course they'll pay the tolls. They've been told to bring quarters and have them ready.

Big deal. They're paying tolls like the rest of us.

We should charge them $1000 each to pay the salaries of the police officers we have to pay to go shut down the roads. It's complete and utter BS that we as citizens don't have access to a road but these out of towners do.

They shut their site down when attention was drawn to it. This seems a crooked bunch

They are VDOT commissioners.

Also,

They are in the Public Relations office of the Virginia State Police.

I had to corrupt all these email address because the filter thinks this is spam. :(

we may have rain here in a couple hours, just in time for them to come rolling through the toll road/66. considering no one around here can drive when it rains, or snow is predicted, the closure of 66 is slam sure to fubar traffic until probably 11:30 tonight...

The impact on traffic will be minimal, although it's funny reading all the comments here from those who are supposedly at work.

It's a Friday, which is lighter than normal due to flex time (non)-work from home 'workers', a big week for vacations, schools and colleges are on summer break. Many saw the warnings and have plans to avoid the route.

For all the to-do, everyone is getting their panties all bunched up over nothing.

So, a big boo hoo to all you drama queens.

Spoken like a true idiot. Closing a major highway during the middle of a weekday will have a "minimal" impact on traffic.

I hear VDOT has some job openings. They could use a few more rocket scientists like you on board. :-)

Please, if you think it's "over nothing", voluntarily plan a trip inside the city during these hours, and see for yourself if it's "nothing". It's easy for you to say that, since you don't have to drive it. Put up, or be quiet. It's not "minimal", the local headlines are all about "area bracing for gridlock, meltdown", if you drive I-66 at any frequency like 1 work day a week, you would not be making this statement. All detours incur a huge time penalty, since I-66 is a major thoroughfare and not just some small county route. In addition, all routes into the city are already heavily congested with their own local traffic, being themselves major thoroughfares. You know what would be "minimal", doing it during the hours between 10 and 3, which is when constructions are usually scheduled. You know what else would be "minimal", doing it on a Saturday or Sunday, when most people use the roads by choice and not by necessity.

You make a lot of assumptions to support your case.

If it is "nothing" then why block the road? I truly fail to see why these riders can't wait through normal traffic to get to the Pentagon.

The only part of 66E that is being shutdown is well inside the beltway. It is inbound to DC, against the flow of outbound rush hour traffic where 267 and 66 merge. I don't see how it is going to significantly impact 66 outside the beltway. Westbound should not be affected, you are subject to the same crapshoot stop and go. Eastbound to the beltway perhaps but you are dumping off to the beltway

Greenway & DTR are going to be open but will suck. Westbound rubberneckers and eastbound congestion. Won't be gridlock.

Not defending these bikers fags but i do think it is overblown.

If i lived in Arlington and commuted home from the Dulles area I would be pissed though.
